That day, my friend Mel and I stood at the foot of the 11,240-foot-high Mount Hood at the age of 16.
We started at 3 a.m. It's safer to start winter climbs at night when there's no sunlight so the snow is frozen hard (冻硬的). It was cold but we had warm clothes. Along the way, we met two other climbers and continued on together.
After 5 hours, we reached Devil's Kitchen, a point at about 10,000 feet. Then the wind got stronger and the other climbers turned back, but Mel and I went ahead. We were well prepared for the climb.
At around 9 a.m., we reached Ice Step. Suddenly, I heard the ice under my feet break. In a second, I fell backward. I could hear Mel calling me as I rolled (翻滚) down the mountain. I stuck out my arms and legs, trying to catch anything. Luckily, I came to a stop on a ground just above Devil's Kitchen. I'd fallen 600 feet. My face was bloodied from cuts. I checked my body, my head, neck and arms...
For the most part, I was fine, except that there was a bad pain in my left leg. I couldn't move.
As Mel made her way down, I shouted for help, and other climbers came. They called the rescue team (救援队) and stayed with me. I lay on the ice in pain before the rescuers reached me and pulled me down the mountain to West Hospital. The doctors said it would be a year before I could climb again, but I was back 6 months later.

When I was a teenager growing up in a town, I felt studying very boring. I wanted to leave school and have my own life. There were only two ways for me to do this — working in the toy factory in my town, or getting married. I chose the first one. I was nervous when I told my father that I wanted to leave school. I thought he would say, "No! You are going to college." Instead, he surprised me when he said, "OK. We'll go to the toy factory."
Two days later, he took me to the factory. I had a very romantic idea of working in a factory. I had imagined everyone to be friendly working together and having fun. I even imagined there would be music and singing. I guess I had watched too many movies as a teenager.
When we arrived at the factory gates, my father spoke to the guard(警卫) and one minute later we went inside. My father said, "Take your time. Look around." I walked around the factory, looking at the buildings, the workers, and listening to the noise. It was terrible. I ran back to my father and said, "I want to go home."
He asked me, "What do you think of the factory "
"It's terrible," I replied.
"You have the other choice if you don't want to go back to school. But I think getting married is even worse!" he said.
I went back to school the next day. From then on, I studied as hard as I could. Finally, I got into a good college. I enjoyed studying English so I decided to major in(主修) languages at college. Thanks to my father and our trip to the factory, now I work in a company which is a big one in a city. And my father takes pride in(为……感到自豪) me.
