In the early 19th century, Egypt connected two vast regions: the Ottoman Empire(奥斯曼帝国)
and the African continent. For centuries, the Ottoman Empire had been at出e center of Eurasian
trade. It had also been a m句or center of manufacturing which produced handmade goods for
Europe and Africa.
However, the indl』strialization of Europe meant that cheaper goods made by machines soon
Hooded into the Ouoman Empire. The result of this competition was that Africa was increasingly

factories of its own.

Egypt was an African country that was technica.lly part of th巳 Ottoman Em阴阳. It was first
invaded by the French army. With British help, the Ottoman force唱 drove the French out of Egypt.
Fol owing this, Muhammad Ali successfully brought about Egyptian independ巳nce from th巳
Ottoman Empire. By 1831, he was e仔ectively an independent ruler of a more modern Egypt.
Egypt was already a sma.11-sca]e producer of cotton, which was sold to Britain. Ali encouraged
even more cotton production nationwide. With th巳 money from this cotton production, Ali's
government b巳gan to aid factories so that th巳 country could profit from its own industrialization. By
th巳 late 1840s, it looked like Egypt would eventually become an industrial power.
During the following years, Egypt’s economy fil且旦旦旦旦g and slowly slid into decliJ1e. The
factories ceased production, and by the 1880s, it had to seek help台om Britain fmancially. Though
Egypt remain巳d formally independent, it seemed to b巳 more like a British colony.
Europeans kept interfering in Egypt partly because of th巳 Suez Canal. Egypt's new leaders
were already stressful because of the industrial collaps巳 that left th巳ir country unable to repay th巳
money borrowed from Britain. Finally, in 1875, the king sold his share i11 the Suez Canal Company

There is increasing a.larm about the extent of microplastic pollution, which has been found
everywh巳re台om Everest to the Arctic. However, it turns out there's an even smaller and more toxic
form of plastic pollution entering remote reaches of th 巳 glob巳. A n巳W study published in
Environmental Res巳arch found significant quantities of nanoplastics in ice sample唱 from both the
North and South Poles.
“Now we know that nanoplastics are transported to these corners of the Earth in these
quantities. This indicates that nanoplastics are really a bigger pollution problem than we thought, ”
study lead author Dusan Materic said in a press release.
Nanoplastics are plastics that are smalI 巳r than a microm巳ter in size. Their small size m巳ans
th巳y are more difficult to study than microplastics, or plastics between five millimeters and a
micrometer. But th巳y may b巳 even more dangerous.
“Nanoplastics are very toxicologically(毒理学地) active compared to , for instance,
microplastics, and that’s why this is very important, ” Materic said
s
Materic and his team used new methods to m巳asure nanoplastic p创lution in ice samples from
Greenland and A1tarctica. They sampled a 14-m巳ter-deep ice core from th巳 Greenland ice cap and
sea ice from Antarctica’s McMurdo Sound. They found that there were an average of 13.2
nanograms per milliliter of nanoplastics in the Greenland ice and an averagβ of 52.3 nanograms per
milliliter in the A1tarctic ic息
But what was even more surprising than the amount of nanoplastics i11 the remote ice was just
how long they had sat there. “ In the Greenland core, we se也 nanoplastic pollution happeni11g all
the way from the 1960s. So organisms in that re2ion. despite the lack of the solid evidence,
likel) all over the world, have been exposed to it for quite some time now, ” Materic said.
The study also looked at the types of plastic present in the samples. Half of the Greenland
nanoplastics were polyethylene (PE), the kind of plastic used for plastic bags and packaging. A
quarter came from tires and a白白h were polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used for
clothing and bottles.
)32. Why should m唱earchers focus more on nanoplastics
A. Th巳y are mor芭 important to science.
B.Th巳y are smaller but more dangβrous.
C. They are easily polluted by ocean water.
D. Th巳y are more active in cold surroundings.
)33. What can we learn about nanoplastics
A. Th巳 North and South pole唱 are the birthplace of nanoplastics.
B. Nanoplastics have less influence on the planet than microplastics.
C. Nanoplastics found in the samples are widely used in th巳 daily life.
D. Nanoplastics have been existing since th巳 1960s throughout the world
)34. What does the underlined word “that region” refer to in Paragraph 6
A. Greenland ice cap. B. Antarctica's McMurdo.
C.Th巳 south and north poles. D. All places in the world.
)35. Which of the fol lowing can be the best title for th巳 text
A. Microplastics-proving more dangerous.
B. Nanoplastics-making its way to the poles.
C. Nanoplastics-posing a threat to people’s life.
D. Microplastics-setting the alarm bells ringing.

Walking across campus with every pair of eyes on you can be embarrassing, especially when
you’re 13 years old. I looked around m巳 in desperate search of a friendly face, a smile , anything. I
was quite disappointed, to say the least. And I, in turn, felt somewhat foolish, walking across
campus with a fals巳 smile on my face. I was simply attempting to follow the advice my mother had
given me years before: when things get awkward, smil巳. No matter where you are, a smile wil.l
always be understood. A smil巳 is universal. At that very moment, however, I felt my mother's
advice didn’t work.
On top of it all, my mind was racing with questions and concerns typical of any 13-year-old on
th巳 first day of school: where would I sit at lunch Who would I talk to Not to mention, how
would I make friends when I d1巾 ’I even speak th巳 language My heartbeat quickened, and I felt

When th巳 teach巳r introduced me to th巳 class as the “American girl”, 10 s巳ts of hands

of it was positive. It was almost as if they weren’t sure what to make of me and I was being
