Taking away a city’s rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can’t eat or use. If we kept these things we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.
In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of the city to a dump(垃圾站). Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs(澡盆) and other places.
To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you’d never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.
In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. In many high schools, there are strict rules about using mobile phones. If your phone rings in class, for example, the teacher will be very angry.
Every mobile phone has a ringtone(铃声). It tells you that someone is calling you. Now, there is a ringtone called “mosquitotone(蚊子铃声)”. Using it, students can receive calls and text messages(短信) in class but the teacher will not realize what is happening. How?
Mosquitotone has a special sound. Only children and teenagers can hear it. As we get older, we are unable to hear some sounds with high frequencies(频率). As a result, a child or teenager can hear the mosquitotone ringtone, but it’s inaudible to someone 20 or older.
But sometimes, people over 20 can hear the ringtone. One British student’s phone uses mosquitotone. In class, the student’s phone rang. The 32-year-old teacher looked at the student and became unhappy. “I heard that. You know the rules: no mobile phone in class.”
Not all the students are interested in mosquitotone. Jerry Jones, a high school student of 17, says, “Using mosquitotone too often is bad for our hearing. I may use it for pleasure, but not in class. It’s unfair to the teachers!”
What do parents think of mosquitotone? “I think it is perfect for places like movie theaters,” says Connie Neeson, 44. “Think about it. You’re watching a film and someone’s mobile phone rings. Mosquitotone is good because many people don’t hear it. However, it also has a bad influence on their study if students use it in class.”

Apple’s logo is one of the most familiar icons(图标) around the world. But what’s the story about the Apple logo? The image of the apple is obvious, because that’s the name of the company. What about the bite? The famous story is that the logo shows respect and honour for Alan Turing. He was the father of computer science. Last weekend we found a really beautiful shell(壳) while my friend and I were playing volleyball at the beach. He picked it up and said it was his. In fact, I saw it first. I was so angry that I thought about hitting him. However, “ Violence (武力) is the worst!” came to my mind. Our parents and teachers often tell us not to fight. I didn’t fight but talked with him instead. If two adults use violence towards each other in order to win, it’s quite wrong. If one injured the other, he would be caught. If one killed the other, he would be put into prison(监狱) for years, even for the rest of his life.
Now when two countries have different thoughts, they often use violence and fight a war between the countries. It’s rather bad! Thousands of people have been killed and injured at war. And it brings much trouble to the world.A war is rather violence. Adults will say they are fighting wars to solve problems and make peace. But can wars really “ make peace”? I suppose not. Guns(枪) can’t create love and care. Why can't adults use their brains(脑)? They might say things are not so easy. However, why are they doing so? Adults are our models! Can wars make peace?

After she became a teacher, Dolores noticed that many of her students were not getting enough food to eat. Some of them wore very old clothes. Dolores wondered how she could help them.

Getting higher pay for the farm workers was not easy. Dolores worked hard to make sure that farm workers got good pay for their work. She knew that nothing would change unless people made new laws to help the workers. Through all her hard work, new laws were made that gave farm workers good pay.

The high school diploma (文凭) is losing its value quickly, as a growing number of students graduate (毕业) from school without the math and reading skills that colleges and companies require, according to a new report.
The high school graduation exams that most states (州) require students to pass before they graduate remain far too easy. Most of the exams generally test eighth-or ninth-grade level work.
Today, even high school graduates who are going to have blue-collar (蓝领) jobs need to study the math, research and writing courses. But in high school, only students who are going to college are now required to take these courses.
“If you want a good job with a good pay, it’s a high-skill job,” said Michael Cohen, a leading member of the America Diploma Project.
The project suggests that all graduates master a wide range (范围) of skills. “A high school diploma should mean something to a company and university,” said Ohio Gov. Bob Taft, who is Achieve’s co-chairman.
In Taft’s state, about 30% students who go directly to college from high school have to take remedial classes of English or math, he said. It’s easy to see that the present high-school graduating standards are not preparing students for college education.
And with high-skilled jobs increasingly headed overseas to places like India and Ireland, states need to act, he said.
To prove why math and reading skills matter, the report includes real-life examples of problems students meet in college and that workers must solve each day on the job. ?
Some states are taking actions to upgrade the high school diploma. In Texas, all high school students, starting with the 2008 graduating class, will have to take the college-prep curriculum (大学预备课程) - unless a parent agrees to an easier course load. Other states are planning similar moves.
The report includes examples of reading and math skills that high-school students should have. Project leaders say they hope parents will use those examples to judge (评定) the coursework at their kids’ high schools.
47. Why is the high school diploma losing its value quickly?
A. Because the number of high school students is growing fast.
B. Because high school students fail to reach the standards.
C. Because the graduation tests are easier than it should be.
D. Because difficult courses are not required in high schools.
48. Remedial classes in Paragraph 6 mean classes____.
A. for good learners to study quickly and better
B. for slower learners weak in the subject
C. for learners to be taught one by one
D. for learners to reach a higher standard
49. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Colleges require higher math and reading skills than companies.
B. It is easier for companies to find high-skilled workers in India.
C. Math and reading skills help little for workers to solve daily problems.
D. Parents ask high schools to offer college-prep curriculum in Texas.
50. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. High School Diploma Means Little
B. Give Students More High-skill Jobs
C. Math and Reading Skills Really Matter
D. Judge Coursework at High Schools

DJs are the people who play and present music on the radio, or in a nightclub. A VJ is a person who introduces music videos on television.
VJs were first seen on television in the early 1980s when MTV went on the air. As MTV caught on, more and more audience(观众)went for music videos, many other kinds of music video channels(频道)started sending out programs. Besides rock music, there were channels later for other kinds of music, such as country music, light rock, and R&B, and all of these channels needed VJs. By the 1990s, international music video channels like Channel V in Asia and VIVA in Europe had started.
The VJs for the new international stations had to be chosen carefully. Although some VJs did shows for small audiences and showed mostly local things, other VJs presented shows for international viewers. These VJs, and the things they presented, needed to be popular in several different cultures.
One successful international VJ in Asia is Asha Gill. She is from Malaysia, but her parents and grandparents are from India, France, and England. She speaks three languages and has fans across Asia, from Japan to the United Arab Emirates.
Another VJ who has made a big hit in Asia is Lili. She is actually a computer-animated VJ on MTV Asia. Her shows can be seen in five languages.
When asked what makes a good video jockey, many successful VJs have given similar answers. To be a good VJ you need to know about music, you need to be funny, and you can’t be shy.

A. In the early 1980s. B. In the late 1980s.
C. By the 1990s. D. In the early 1990s.

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave(挥手)to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not relish the long train journey and had brought along many magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sat down and started to read magazines.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive, I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. When my uncle arrived, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug(拥抱). I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.

Easter is still a great day for worship(敬拜), candy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for rabbits.
And no, not because the kids like to pull their ears. The point is because of weather change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures are having harmful effects on at least five kinds of rabbits in the US.
Take the Lower Keys Marsh rabbit as an example. It lives on the islands, but it is seriously affected(影响)now by rising sea levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of 0.9-meter would destroy their living place completely.
The snowshoe hare, on the other hand, has a color problem. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, which gives them better cover from predators (捕食者) . As the number of days with snow becoming less, more and more rabbits are being left in white fur during the days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators.
American pikas or rock rabbits might be the first of these species to go die out because of the weather change. Pikas live high in the cool, damp mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally move to higher ground – but they already live on the mountaintops. They can’t go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their living place heats up.
The volcano rabbit has the same problem. Recent studies have shown that their lower living place has already moved upward about 700 meters, but there are not right plants for them to move higher, so they have to stay in the middle.
Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their living places have been destroyed by development. They also live on winter cover, but lesser snowfall is leaving them unprotected.
All of these give new meaning to dressing up in a huge rabbit costume(服装)this Easter.
56. Why does the writer mention Easter at the beginning of the passage?
A. To raise the problem about rabbits.
B. To remind people of Easter traditions.
C. To show the importance of Easter Day.
D. To discuss the relationship between Easter and rabbits.
57. Why can some rabbits be easily discovered by predators now?
A. Because they have moved to the places with fewer plants.
B. Because they can hardly live on color cover as before.
C. Because they can’t change their color into white.
D. Because they are left to more skillful hunters.
58. What is the problem faced by rock rabbits and volcano rabbits?
A. They are both affected by less snow.
B. Neither of them can find enough food.
C. Neither of them can move to higher place.
D. They are both affected by rising sea levels.
59. What can you infer from the passage?
A. Predators are more skillful than before.
B. The weather is getting much hotter now.
C. There will be no rabbit costume for Easter soon.
D. People should care more about the rabbit problem.

Kenny Richards wishes everyone knows as much about Tourette’s Syndrome( TS,抽动秽语综合症) as he does. As a youth ambassador( 大使) for the Tourette’s Syndrome Association in the US, the 13-year-old boy wants to help kids and adults learn more about TS.
“ It’s not contagious(传染的), ” said the eighth-grader at Hudtloff Middle School in Washington State. “ It’s a tic disorder(抽动障碍). It’s common with kids. ”
According to Richards, TS is mainly made up of movement tics. At least 100, 000 Americans have this problem. It often appears in childhood but can improve in youth or adulthood.
Richards was told he had TS three years ago when his eyes always “ went crazy”. Because of this, he was placed in the special needs classroom, but he said the work wasn’t challenging. His first year of middle school was so stressful that his mom took him out of school and home-schooled him for the year.
“ My parents thought that because I had TS that it was harder for me to learn, but it wasn’t,” he said. The next year, he returned to school and his grades improved.
Being named a youth ambassador last year also helped Richards’ confidence. This spring, he and his mom traveled to Washington D. C. , for a meeting and training. He met other kids from around the country who were also dealing with TS. “ Each one of us had a bond(纽带) , ” said Richards. “ It also made me realized I don’t have to get so stressed-out over it.”
Now, Richards wants to visit a primary school. Since becoming a TS ambassador, he said, he feels more comfortable taking about the disorder.
“ I’m open and free at any time, anywhere, ” Richards said.

Dream is a story that a person “watches” or even takes part in during sleep. Dream events are imaginary, but they are related to real experiences and needs in the dreamer’s life. They seem real while they are taking place. Some dreams are pleasant, others are annoying, and still others are frightening.
Everyone dreams, but some persons never recall(回忆) dreaming. Others remember only a little about a dream they had just before awakening and nothing about earlier dreams. No one recalls all his dreams.
Dreams involve little logical thought. In most dreams, the dreamer can’t control what happens to him. The story may be confusing , and things happen that would not happen in real life. People see in most dreams, but they may also hear, smell, touch, and taste in their dreams. Most dreams occur in color, but persons who have been blind since birth do not see at all in dreams.
Dreams are a product of the sleeper’s mind. They include events and feelings that he has experienced. Most dreams are related to events of the day before the dream and strong wishes of the dreamer. Many minor incidents of the hours before sleep appear in dreams. Few events more than two days old turn up. Deep wishes or fears, especially those held since childhood, often appear in dreams, and many dreams fulfill(实现) such wishes. Events in the sleeper’s surrounding, a loud noise, for example, may become part of a dream, but they do not cause dreams.
Some dreams involve deep feelings that a person may not realize he has. Psychiatrists(精神病医生) often use material from a patient’s dreams to help the person understand himself better.
Dreaming may help maintain(保持) good learning ability, memory, and emotional adjustment. People who get plenty of sleep- but are awakened each time they begin to dream-become anxious and restless.

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted* by all people.
Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and math need not be taught in details*, either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities*. In 1926, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo. The next important date in the history of photography was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his picture you could see everything clearly, even the smallest thing. This kind of photo was called a Daguerreotype(银版照相). Soon other people began to use Daguerre’s way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all around the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains. In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers could take picture of people and moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of film and other machines. But this did not stop them, for example, some in the US worked so hard. Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual because they were very lifelike(栩栩如生的). Photography also became one kind of art by the end of the 19th century. “Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”
This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in AD(公元) 53 wrote it.
We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?
Picture this. You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?
Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity(电) often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives.
One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave(微波炉), computer or mobile phones.
The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a “trendy(赶时髦的), beer-drinking granny”, to one who cooked things.
56. The writer uses the quote(引号) at the beginning of the story to ________.
A. tell us a truth about our lives
B. tell us wha
