1.On September 11, 2001, I arrived at my building at around 8:30 a.m.
arrive / 'ra v/ v. 到达
e.g. When did you arrive at school
你什么时候到校的?
We arrived in Beijing at ten in the morning.
我们上午十点到达北京。
辨析:arrive, get 与reach
arrive后接介词in 或at 后再接地点。at 后接小地点,in 后接大地点。
get后加介词to 后再接地点。
reach后直接接地点。也指到达某一数量。
e.g. He arrived at home very late. 他到家很晚。
How did he get to the zoo 他怎样到达动物园的?
We reached the library on foot. 我们步行到达图书馆。
I was about to go up when I decided to get a coffee first.
be about to do sth. be about to 忙于;即将做某事。侧重于表示动作马上就要发生,常与when引导的从句连用,但不与具体的时间状语连用。
One of my friends is about to have her second baby. 我的一个朋友马 上就要生第二个小孩了。
e.g. The plane is about to take off. 飞机即将起飞。
We were just about to leave when Jerry arrived.
我们正要离开,这时杰里来了。
decide to do sth. 决定做某事
e.g. In the end we decided to give up the plan.
最后我们决定放弃这个计划。
e.g. Would you like to decide on another time
你要不要另外选定个时间?
As I was waiting in line with other office workers, I heard a loud sound.
in line with (与……)成一排 wait in line with 意为“与……排队等候”。
stand in line 站成一排
cut in line 插队
e.g. Please stand in line with each other. 请站成一排。
Customers are waiting in line at the cash register, and nobody wants to cut in line. 顾客在收银台旁排队,没有人想插队。
4. We stared in disbelief at the black smoke rising above the burning building.
stare /ste / v. 盯着看;凝视 常与介词at 搭配。表示 “睁大眼睛凝视”,并含有“惊奇”“傲慢”或“茫然”的意思。
e.g. Don’t stare at the girl all the time. 不要一直盯着那女孩。
She gave me a blank stare. 她面无表情地盯着我。
辨析:stare 与look
stare指由于好奇、惊讶、赞叹等原因而瞪大眼睛,长时间地、直接地注视,有时含有无礼的意味。
look指集中注意力看,强调动作,后接宾语时要加at,也可单独使用,以引起对方的注意。
e.g. It’s impolite to stare at others.盯着别人是不礼貌的。
Don’t look at the screen. 不要看屏幕。
Look. There is a bird in the tree.看,树上有一只鸟。
I screamed and everyone stared. 我尖叫一声,众人都盯着我看。
It's rude to stare at people. 盯着人看不礼貌。
disbelief /d sb 'li f/ n. 不信;怀疑
e.g. I stared at him in disbelief, shocked at what he had said.
我怀疑地盯着他,对他说的话感到十分震惊。
It left us feeling with disbelief.
它让我们感到心烦意乱,难以置信。
“in+ 表示情感的名词”可用作状语,表示一种情感状态。常见的有:
in anger 愤怒地;in surprise 惊讶地;
in excitement 兴奋地;in despair 绝望地
burn /b (r) n/ v. 着火;燃烧 既可作及物动词,又可作不及物动词。(burnt, burnt / burned, burned) 有两个基本意思。
① 燃烧;点燃;发光
例:We burn coal to keep warm.
② 烧伤;烧焦;烫伤;晒黑
例: The child got burnt while playing with fire. 那小孩玩火时,把自己烧伤了。
e.g. Don’t burn yourself when you play with fire.
玩火时别烧着你自己。
Paper can burn easily. 纸易燃。
burning adj. 着火的;燃烧的
⑴ burn away烧掉 ,逐渐消失
Half of the candle had burnt away.
⑵ burn down 渐渐烧完,火势减弱
The room grew colder as the fire burnt down.
5.I felt lucky to be alive.我感到幸运的是我还活着。
alive adj.,意为“活着;有生气的”。?
【辨析】alive, living与lively?
(1)alive adj.,意为“活着;有生气的”,有时也可作后置定语。?
e.g.:No man alive will believe you!没有一个活着的人会相信你。
(2)living adj.,意为“有生命的;活着的”,可作前置定语或表语。?
e.g.:Both animals and plants are living things.动物和植物都是生物。?
(3)lively adj.,意为“生动的;活泼的”,可作表语或定语。
e.g.:She was very lively at the dancing party.她在舞会上非常活跃。
e.g. He is one of the greatest artists alive today.
他是当今在世的最伟大的艺术家之一。
All living things need water. 一切生物都需要水。
He said he had seen a live whale. 他说他见过活鲸。
She was very lively at the party. 她在聚会上非常活跃。

A neighbor called 911 at 11:09 a.m. after seeing smoke coming from a house in the 165 block of 54th Street Southeast.
The man who lives in the home was able to get his older child and the family dog out of the house on fire. Just then Monroe police officers arrived. The father said his younger child was still on the upper level of the house but he didn't know where.
Officers did a quick search of the house but couldn't find the girl. One of them closed the door to the master bedroom, where the fire started, controlling it and slowing its spread. Firefighters arrived and after searching the closet and narrow beds in another bedroom, one firefighter noticed the closed toy box at the foot of the bed.
“She wasn't making sounds,” later the firefighter said of the girl, whose exact age he didn't know. “I opened it up and saw her. She was lying in the toy box just balled up.”
Firefighters got the girl outside, where she was examined by doctors and found to be fine. The fire was quickly put out. The police officer who managed to shut the master bedroom door was highly praised. And the girl's father was so thankful to firefighters.
