Receiving is Giving
I learned about giving in a gentle, caring way. Because my mother was a skilled tailor,I was a ___16___ child. It might have been something related to “the joy of giving” that makes me ___17___ several of my most fashionable dresses to a less ___18___ little girl, who lived with disabled parents.
After thanking me gratefully, the little girl ___19___ me her only party dress. Puzzled, I tried to ___20___, but my mother guided me. She thanked the girl and told her how ___21___ I would be wearing the dress. Then I came to know that my greatest gift to the girl was ___22___ of the gift she offered me.
Many years later, I stood by___23___as my small rabbit Ashley lay ___24___. Suddenly she noticed a scratch(抓痕)on the ___25___of her friend Lillian. With a last burst of ___26___ ,she raised her head and began to ___27___ Lillian’s cut. With more strength than she had ___28___in several weeks, she struggled to make Lillian feel ___29___. Lillian’s last gift to her dying friend was to___30___. Actually, Lillian just sat there to accept Ashley’s ___31___ and gentle cleaning quietly on her shoulder.
___32___then, I have witnessed the same phenomenon several times. Dying rabbits take care of the ___33___ rabbits, who give by ___34___ themselves to be cared for. I’m just astonished to see animals show such pride, self-respect, and a sense of when to give and ___35___ to receive.
I think we human beings have to learn this: sometimes receiving is giving.

石家庄市第一中学2013—2014学年度第一学期期末考试高二年级英语试题
The morning had been a disaster. My tooth was aching, and I’d been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt: “The trouble with you is that you won’t put yourself in my place. Can’t you see things from my point of view?” I shook my head stubbornly(固执地)and felt the ache in my tooth. I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable. I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally, at about lunchtime, I got lucky.
“If you e by right now,” the receptionist said, “the dentist will fit you in.”
I took my purse and keys and rushed to my car. But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn’t he as busy as the others?
In the dentist’s office, I sat down and looked around. I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice-cold one.
When I told her my fears, she laughed and said, “Don’t worry. The dentist is very good.”
“How long do I have to wait for him?” I asked impatiently.
“e on, he is ing. Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork,” the assistant said.
“The artwork?” I was puzzled.
The chair went back. Suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was! At that moment, I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.
What a relief!

Last Christmas, when I was in the fourth grade and my brother was in the first grade, our school held its yearly Holiday Shop. At the Holiday Shop students can buy things like necklaces, key chains, and other small items for their friends and family as Christmas gifts. Since my brother really wanted to take part, my mom gave him two dollars to buy his Christmas gifts.
My mom didn’t know that he had picked out a special necklace for her. When he got home from the Holiday Shop that day, he couldn’t wait to show it to me. He pulled out a little green box and opened it. Inside was a gold chain with a little red flower and a man-made diamond next to gold letters that spelled out,“Grandmother”.
“Wow,” I said.“It’s beautiful.” Since my brother was in the first grade and was just learning to read, he didn’t realize that the necklace said “Grandmother” instead of “Mother”. I knew that on Christmas morning, when he found out he had bought the wrong necklace, he would be very unhappy, so I said nothing more about it. My brother ran and put the necklace under his bed to hide it from Mom until Christmas morning.
When he wasn’t looking, I took the necklace and put it in my backpack. The next day I took it back to school and asked the woman who ran the Holiday Shop if I could change it for the “Mother” necklace. She said yes. When I got home that day, I put the necklace under my brother’s bed.
When my mom opened it up on Christmas morning, my brother was so exalted! My mom’s eyes were filled with joy. She knew what had happened, which made the necklace even more special to her!
My brother still does not know what I did, but I knew I had done the right thing.

Life is full of various experiences, some of which are unforgettable. I still remember the hiking experience with my classmates for 16 km a year ago. That summer day, we set off early in the morning, thinking it would be great fun to walk for so long a distance. However, with the weather getting hotter and hotter, I found my legs heavier and heavier. What’s worse, my feet began bleeding because of long time pressing against the shoes. At one point, I even wanted to give up. But I managed to drag the rest of the way to the destination.
Though not pleasant, this journey was impressive and rewarding. I learnt that life is a long journey like this. No matter what happens, we should never give up, and we will finally achieve what we want to.
