SCIENCE FESTIVAL
Last week, our school held a science festival. It was such a big success that we
all enjoyed ourselves.
The science festival started with the technology gallery, which introduced some
great inventions in history, such as the wheel and the telephone, to name a few.
Another popular activity was the time machine, where we had a chance to
“communicate” with some giants and learn about the stories behind some inventions
like the ballpoint pen and paper. What impressed me most was the invention
competition. The winner was an eighth grader who invented a flying car model. He
wowed the audience with amazing imagination and creativity.
The science festival has raised our awareness of the important role inventions
have played in our lives. We are looking forward to the next science festival.

Everyone talks about how different Japanese culture is, but I didn’t believe it. I
decided to find out for myself and within 24 hours of arrival in Tokyo, I knew
everything I heard about Japan was real.
I remember arriving at the airport in Tokyo and having to take the train into the
city. I wasn’t sure how and where to take the train so I got closer to a man in uniform
(制服) and asked, “Where can I take the train ” To my surprise, he did not speak any
English! He spoke quickly in Japanese and when he saw my confused (困惑的) face, he
smiled and bowed, which I found very strange at the time. How could people in such a
developed country not speak English
Finally, I was able to find someone that could help me get my train ticket. I went
over to the time schedule and saw that the train would arrive in 5 minutes. In my head,
5 minutes was like at least 10 minutes. But in exactly 5 minutes, the train arrived.

train. Later I found out it is rude to talk on trains, especially on the phone.

Birds fly into windows at all times of year, but it is most common during the
spring and fall migration (迁徙) season and also when young birds are just learning to
fly. Bird-building strikes happen at all hours of the day, but the reason behind it is
different during the day from it is at night.
八年级英语 第 3 页 共 8 页
During the day birds often fly into windows and tall buildings covered by glass.
Most of the time, birds live in the wild, such as forests and wetlands. These birds have
no idea what glass is. They might see small trees and flowers inside a window and
want to rest on these plants. They are unaware of the glass between them and the
plants. As a result, they fly right into the glass.
At night, the light in the buildings attracts birds. Many migratory birds fly at night,
and for reasons scientists do not yet fully understand, the light at night can cause birds
to change their flight path. This is especially true on foggy days.
Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help stop it. The best thing you can
do is choose bird-friendly glass. There are also some less expensive ways to make
your windows more visible (可见的 ) to birds. Even something as simple as closing
your curtains (窗帘) will prevent birds from hitting windows. Turning off the lights at
night helps cut down on the number of birds that fly into buildings and it also helps
save energy. And if your windows have screens on them, they will go a long way in
stopping birds strikes.
16. What’s the reason for bird-building strikes during the day
A. Glass. B. Wind. C. Sound. D. Rain.
17. Why do birds hit windows at night
A. Because they are looking for food.
B. Because the light catches their attention.
C. Because they are tired and want to have a rest.
D. Because the window is a good place for hiding.
18. What does the underlined word “prevent” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. punish B. stop C. encourage D. challenge
19. What can you do to help stop birds flying into windows
A. Open the curtains. B. Buy expensive glass.
C. Grow small plants. D. Keep lights off at night.
20. In which part of a magazine can we probably read this passage
A. Science. B. Travel. C. Nature. D. Culture.

The FIFA World Cup has been held every four years, except in 1942 and 1946
because of World War II. More people watch the World Cup finals than any other
sporting event in the world — even more people than the Olympic Games.
The first World Cup was in 1930 in Uruguay. 13 countries played in the first

World Cup team. They have won it five times and they are the only team that has
played in every tournament. However, they are the only ones to have never won it
when they have hosted the tournament. Germany and Italy have both won four times.
In 1966, England hosted the World Cup and the national team also won it.
Before the World Cup started, a thief stole the Cup and tried to sell it. A pet dog
named Pickles found the missing World Cup!
The timing of the World Cup 2022 has been moved from its usually
May-June-July to November-December because of the heat in Qatar, the smallest
country to host the World Cup. In addition, the World Cup Qatar will be the last to
include 32 teams.
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted together by Canada, Mexico and the United
States with 48 teams taking part for the first time ever.
21. When did the fourth edition of the World Cup take place

22. Which country has won the most World Cups
