Dear Laura,
How are you It has been several weeks since I heard from you. I have been missing you a lot these days, so I thought I should find out how you are doing. Hope this letter finds you in the best of health. Things here are fine, though they seem to be a little boring now without you.
Since school started, I have made some new friends who are great company(陪伴).But I keep remembering what a great time we had during our summer vacations. Those long rides in the woods, often shopping at the mall and our video game matches were all so much fun. Things here are a little different, and it is going to take me some time to get used to them.

However, there are some really boring science classes that I just don't seem to enjoy. They all sound so difficult, but I have to learn them. A few years later, I am going to drop these subjects forever! The good thing is that all the friends I've made feel just the same way about these science classes.
How have things been with you How about your school and all those &eat friends you keep talking about Did you join that guitar class you wanted to so badly Look forward to hearing from you.

I'm pretty sure everyone wants to visit Europe at least once in their lifetime. Here's a list of the most amazing places to visit in Europe.
Riviera
Wow, this is such a beautiful place in Italy. The Cinque Terre is a gorgeous national park, which connects five beautiful villages. Walking paths connect the villages, follow the coastline and offer hikes through hills. The villages remain unaffected by tourism.
Tuscany
Another Italian region, Tuscany is simply appealing. The buildings there are amazing, and the culture is special. From the historical center of Florence to the Cathedral of Pisa, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Make sure you check out the nature reserves, and enjoy a few bottles of the very famous wine.
Lauterbrunnen
Since a school trip here, I've always wanted to revisit this city in Switzerland. The city always seems as if it’s trapped in time. There are untouched fountains and springs everywhere, and a huge number of waterfalls and valleys. The area is very popular for skiing.
The Greek Islands

White houses and beautiful churches, cliffs, beaches and the Aegean Sea make this a shocking and very popular place to visit. However, there is more to do here than just sunbathe. I cannot wait to go back and check out the caves and culture that make the Greek Islands one of the best places in Europe. Venice

For a very long tune humans were responsible for the dropping numbers of sea lions. Today it is against the law in many areas to hunt, harm, or kill a sea lion. However, this doesn't stop such events from taking place secretly. In some countries including Japan there are laws to protect sea lions, but they simply aren't obeyed.
Adult sea lions tend to suffer from plenty of health problems such as cancer. These are problems that usually affect adults. Once a sea lion has cancer there is very little chance for it to recover.
Tapeworms (绦虫) are a huge concern for sea lions as well. While they generally don’t kill them, they can cause the animals to suffer poor health, This is because tapeworms take away many of the nutrients (营养) that the sea lions depend on to grow.
While female sea lions do try to take good care of their young, there are limits. If they aren’t getting enough food, they will stop producing milk for the young to live on. They may become meals for male sea lions when they have no food to eat. Many of the young pups drown when they are in the water because they are not strong enough for the currents (涌流). Their brown color for the first six months means they can be easily noticed by killer whales and sharks. On land these young pups can end up being given up by the adults when there is danger.
There are now international laws to help protect the sea lions from dying out. Conservation groups are working hard to educate the public about the need to protect them. There are laws in place to help protect their natural environments, too. For example in California there are limits of where boats can go so that sea lions aren’t as likely to be struck by them.
( ) 36. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph l refer to
A. Sea lions.
B. Some countries.
C. Japanese people. .
D. Laws to protect sea lions.
( ) 37. Tapeworms are harmful to sea lions because they _______.
A. make them unable to eat
B. can lead to cancer in them
C. can cause them to die easily
D. can lead to poor health in them
( ) 38. What is implied about female sea lions in Paragraph 4
A. They never really care about their pups.
B. They put their own needs before their pups.
C. They always try their best to feed their pups well.
D. They don’t protect their pups from male sea lions.
( ) 39. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Why sea lions haven't died out.
B. Efforts put into protecting sea lions.
C. What conservation groups do for sea lions.
D. International laws to help protect sea lions.
( ) 40. In California the purpose of setting limits of where boats can go is to _______.
A. protect sea lions from being struck
B. prevent fishermen from hunting sea lions
C. keep away from strong currents in the sea
D. prevent people from bringing tapeworms to certain areas
D
In most developing countries, few children graduate from secondary schools and many don’t even finish primary schools. In Ghana, for example, only 50 percent of children complete Grade 5, and of those, less than half can understand a simple paragraph. The UNESCO(联合教科文组织) program Education for All aims to provide the free primary schooling for children. It has been successful in increasing the number of students. But, according to Education for All reports this year, many kids drop out of school. Why don’t they stay
There are lots of reasons. They have difficulty in getting to school and the cost of uniforms is too much for them. As we all know, though tuition (学费) is free, there are often expenses for lunch and examinations. And because the quality of education is often poor, parents are forced to pay for private teachers to make their children pass tests. Besides, while they are in school, children have to forgo opportunities to make money working on the family farm or selling in the marketplace.
Even when learning results are good, very few students continue to study further. Job prospects (前景) for most people in the developing world are poor. If they stay in school and pass Grade 5, or even Grade 10, it does not improve them much. Education programs typically use traditional Western models of education, paying more attention to math, science, language and social studies. These programs have little to do with the lives of poor children. Most students in developing countries face a much more different future from those in developed countries. There are no higher levels of schooling or proper job opportunities for most of these children. They will likely end up working on the farm or starting their own small business.
( ) 41. How many kids in Ghana probably can’t understand a simple article
A. More than 25%.
B. Above 45%.
C. About 50%.
D. More than 75%.

D. Lunch in the school.
( ) 43. The underlined word “forgo” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.
A. find out
B gain
C. give up
D. choose
( ) 44. The main purpose of the passage is to_________.
A. persuade more kids to go to school for better jobs
B. advise poor parents to support their kids education
C. point out the education problems in developing countries
D. report the new development of the education
( ) 45. What’s the author's attitude towards the education in developing countries

Experts have long known that people push responsibility to others and make excuses when things don’t work out. But the new research from the blame (责备) game shows that we escape responsibility because we actually don't believe that what happened is our fault and we try to escape from being blamed.
To learn more about the blame game, researchers did an experiment. They asked 34 students to press keys that could produce three different noises. The noises were active (happiness and laughter), inactive (fear, upset or anger) and neutral (neither happy nor unhappy). The students were asked to try to count the time-between when they pressed the key and when they heard the sound. Students felt there was a longer time between their actions and the inactive sounds than that between their actions and the active ones. They thought that the inactive results have nothing to do with their actions. So they felt less responsible for them.
The results of the experiment suggest that perhaps more of us need to realize that unpleasant or inactive results may actually be caused because of our faults even if we don’t see it that way. And we should know that taking more responsibility for our actions could lead to better relationships with others.

基础写作 (One possible version)
According to a survey, the developing countries are faced with many problems. One of them is that they are under the great population pressure, so controlling the rapid population growth is the necessary solution. In addition, the pace of economic growth of the developing countries is far behind that of the developed countries, and they need to speed up their economic development. Furthermore, the educational level in the developing countries is very low, which in some way also affects their economic development, so they ought to attach more importance to education and improve the quality of the population. All in all, in my opinion, the developing countries should try to solve all these problems mainly on their own, and the developed ones should offer their help to the developing countries.
读写任务 (One possible version)
The passage tells us that it is common for us to escape responsibility for what we did wrong. It points out that taking the blame is very helpful to make friends or gain success.
Indeed, when making mistakes, we always find excuses for ourselves and rarely have the courage to face them. In my opinion, we should face our faults bravely.
Once, a boy got an axe as a present from his father. He liked it and tried it by cutting his father’s tree. His father was very sad about his tree, saying anyone who did this would be punished. Finally, the boy told him the truth. His father forgave him because he thought his son was honest, facing his own mistake. The boy is George Washington, the first American president!
I think we should learn from George Washington. Firstly, be honest and never tell lies. Secondly, face our faults bravely instead of blaming others. Lastly, regard faults or failures as opportunities to improve ourselves, because failure is just a stepping-stone to success.
