Old Bragwynn was the cruellest pirate (海盗) ever to sail the seas. Bragwynn had spent many years out at sea, rowing about in his boat with his dog, Jack. It wasn't until they had grown quite gray that their luck finally changed.
While out at sea one afternoon, they stopped a ship. “Stop!” he shouted: The people aboard the ship did not even notice the little rowboat just ahead of them. And Bragwynn's rowboat was broken into pieces by the great ship. Fortunately, a sailor saw and rescued them.
Instead of expressing thanks, Bragwynn shouted loudly," I'm Old Bragwynn the Pirate. Bring me your captain so that he may give up, or you'll be killed! "
The old man is mad," one of them whispered. Just at that moment, a strong man made his way to the center of the group. "I am the captain of this ship, but I see that you are a greater captain than I," the clever captain gave his men a wink (眨眼) as he spoke. “I'll give up, if you spare the lives of my men and me. For my part, I will serve as your first assistant. What do you think of it " “Very well,” Bragwynn said.
"Now, I'll go and tidy up the captain's room for you," the captain said. He quickly went away and removed the door to his room. He instructed two crewmen to hold the door at the side of the ship.
"Right this way, sir," he said to Bragwynn as he went close.
Bragwynn walked up to the door, happily pushed it open, took one step forward, and fell immediately into the sea.
As for Jack, he stayed aboard and lived the life of a true pirate dog to the end of his days.

Earthquake safety should not be a big concern when you travel in Los Angeles, but in the unlikely event that an earthquake does occur while you're in town, it doesn't hurt to know what to do during an earthquake and have a plan.
If Indoors
* DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy (结实的) table or any other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there isn't a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch (蜷缩) in an inside corner of the building.
* Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Do not leave a building during the shaking. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings try to move to a different place inside the building or try to leave during the shaking.
* Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors, walls and anything that could fall, such as light fixtures (照明设备) or furniture.
* Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under heavy light fixtures that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.
* Be aware that the electricity may go out or fire alarms may go off.
If Outdoors
* Stay there.
* Move away from buildings, streetlights and wires.
* Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. The biggest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits and along outside walls. Most of the 120 deaths from the 1933 Long Beach Earth-quake occurred when people ran outside buildings only to be killed by falling debris (碎片) from walls. Ground movement during an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury.
If in a Moving Vehicle
* Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees and wires.
* Get off carefully once the earthquake stops. Avoid roads or bridges that might have been damaged by the earthquake.
31. What can be inferred from the first paragraph

A. Rush out as quickly as you can.
B. Fall down to the floor.

33. If Tom is in bed when an earthquake occurs, he'd better_______.
A. hide under the bed
B. remain there until the shaking stops
C. climb up heavy furniture
D. put a pillow under his head
34. What can we learn from the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake
A. It's wrong to stay in the open air.
B. None could run outside immediately.
C. It's important to stay away from outside walls.
D. Ground movement can lead to death.
35. If you are driving a car on the road, what should you do during the earthquake

Mei Lun and Mei Huan have been the first giant twin pandas born in the US since 1987. The names of these twin male giant panda cubs (幼崽) were announced at Atlanta Zoo last year. Lun Lun, a 15-year-old giant panda, gave birth to the cubs on July 15, 2013. Zoo officials followed Chinese custom and named the brothers after waiting 100 days. Until then, they were simply known as "Cub A" and "Cub B".
Mei Lun and Mei Huan are the first twin panda cubs to survive in the United States. "We're delighted to finally be able to place two youngsters with names. They have not only made a mark on the history of Atlanta Zoo, but also have made history in the US," Raymond B. King, the zoo's president and CEO, said in a statement.
Atlanta Zoo teamed up with Good Morning America that month to put the pandas' names to public vote. China's Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding provided the choices of names. In just 13 days, 51,000 votes poured in on the show's website.
Under a deal between China and the US, giant pandas originally from China are only lent to foreign zoos for scientific study for several years. Zookeepers at Atlanta Zoo are giving regular updates on the twins' progress in an online blog. Mei Lun and Mei Huan are the fourth and fifth offspring (子女) of Lun Lun and a male giant panda named Yang Yang.
The pandas made their first public appearance in a US exhibit last fall. For the three months before their appearance, the online world had watched the twins grow strong and healthy. "We share this joy with our colleagues (同事) in China and with the cubs' fans around the world," King said.

Buffett is the son of the best investor (投资者) Warren Buffet, and he's the CEO of a philanthropic
foundation (慈善基金会), But he's also a lifelong farmer. He is familiar with the saying that each farmer can expect to have 40 0Wortunities to improve their harvest. Healthy soils are a most important part of productive farms, but l.5 billion people — a fifth of the global population - live on poor land.“You have to fix the soil,” he said. HGB also has the idea that farmers who own their own land will raise crops with an eye to the long-term health of the soil.
He would like to see that balanced with a foreign-aid plan. HGB notes that too often, experts want to make agriculture in developing nations look like farming in rich countries. 读写任务 (One possible version)
A student complained about his difficulties in his life. His teacher didn’t persuade him, but showed him an experiment of boiling a carrot and an egg, which proves that the suffering of life can make us braver and stronger.
Suffering is wealth. But there are different opinions on this saying. Some say “Yes” because they think suffering is necessary for getting success, while others say “No” because they regard suffering as a big block to success.
Of the two opinions, I am for the former. Helen Keller, the writer of If You Give me Three Days of Light, set a good example to us. When she was very young, unfortunately she became blind and deaf because of a serious illness. Such misfortune didn’t defeat her, but caused her to overcome one difficulty after another in her life. Eventually she became one of the greatest writers in the world.
From Helen Keller’s story, I have known suffering or misfortune is not a block but a chance or a kind of wealth, with which we can build our characters and perseverance to gain success.
