I ran into a local store today to pick up a few things. With an important meeting to attend, I was in a hurry, so I didn't take a cart on my way inside. As I walked between the shelves in the store, I passed by a young couple and their baby. I continued going through the store, picked up a few items I needed and ended up standing behind this couple in the checkout line.
While waiting, I noticed that the young father was holding his money tightly and nervously watching each transaction (交易) on the register. The young mother was carrying a baby in her arms and asked the cashier for a job application. When the total was rung up, they had to pick items out of their cart because they didn't have enough money. But all their items were basic necessities that they needed most. It just broke my heart to watch the couple attempt to figure out what they could do without. Somehow, they managed to whittle down their items and paid the bill with the money that they had.
After they left, I quietly asked the cashier to add those items to mine. The cashier rang everything up, and then got me a shopping cart. We put in their items and I hurried over to their car. "This is for you," I told them.
The young father just looked at me with such gratitude and thanked me. I will never forget the expression in his eyes. As I was getting into my car, they drove over. The young mother said, "Miss. thank you so much."
Tears welled up in my eyes - as they are again now, while I write this. "You are so welcome. Pay it forward some day," I replied.

On August 5, 2013, Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, a well-known online company, has bought the Washington. Post for $250 million. The owner of the largest online business in the world is now also the owner of one of the most famous newspapers in the world.
Bezos has shown that newspapers are entering the Internet Age. He thinks that the present way that newspapers are trying to make money, by throwing away the pay wall, is not the best way. People have gotten used to getting their content free over the Internet; however, the pay wall is a system that prevents Internet users from reading webpage content without paying for it. He does see the dead tree version of newspapers is going away, except perhaps as a luxury item (奢侈品). People may be persuaded to pay for subscriptions (订阅) to newspapers directly on their computers.
One thing Amazon has become skilled at is designing the shopping experience for every shopper, based on his or her shopping history. The products that get displayed on everyone's front page are different from each other based on that history. For example, someone who has bought science fiction in the past, may get science fiction shown on his or her front page, and at the same time he or she can still search for any goods and buy any of the items that Amazon offers to him or her. If one used some techniques to read newspapers, one might have his or her own front page. Sports news is shown for those who read newspapers for that type of news, business news for others and so on.
Bezos will see the change of traditional newspapers from just a newspaper in a digital form to something more suitable for each reader, tailored to each reader's taste.

According to a Japanese study, listening to slow music that is considered to be sad can actually cause positive emotions. The researchers from Tokyo University explain that this is because sad music can remind people of romantic films or situations and these romantic feelings can make people feel happier.
The findings help to explain why people enjoy listening to sad music, said Ai Kawakami and his colleagues from Tokyo University of the Arts and the RIKEN Brain Science Institute in Japan.
Kawakami asked 44 volunteers, including both musicians and common people, to listen to two pieces of music, one of which was considered to be sad and the other to be happy. Each participant was required to use a set of keywords to describe both their understanding of the music and their own emotional state.
The researchers explained that sad music caused opposite emotions because the participants of the study tended to think that sad music was more tragic, less romantic and less cheerful than they felt themselves while listening to it.
"In general, sad music produces sadness in listeners, and sadness is considered as an unpleasant emotion. Yet if sad music actually causes only unpleasant Emotion, we would not listen to it," Kawakami said. ''Music that is regarded as sad actually causes romantic emotion as well as sad emotion. Also, unlike sadness in daily life, sadness experienced through art actually feels pleasant, possibly because the latter does not cause an actual threat to our safety." This could help people to deal with their negative emotions in daily life, concluded the researchers.
This study contradicts (与……矛盾) previous research that people have to listen to happy music to improve their moods, but this only works if people are very clear that they're trying to make themselves happier by listening to the songs.

Lola Wang, a 28-year-old marketing officer in Shanghai, makes a six-hour trip to Shandong Province in eastern China to see her parents twice a year. "I should visit them more but having a job in the financial industry means that I have to work long hours and spare some of my personal time for work," Wang, the only child of her family, told CNN.
The problem is common among many young people in China, where the one-child policy and thirty years of economic reforms have made the traditional big family small. It's also a matter of concern for China s new leaders as they fight with the burden of supporting the growing number of elderly people. According to the Xinhua News Agency, China had about 185 million people over the age of 60 at the end of 2011. By 2050, a third of China's population will be the elderly.
A new national law introduced this week requires children whose parents are over 60 years old to visit their parents "frequently" and make sure their material and mental needs are met. It also requires that children should not give up their inheritance rights (继承权) in an attempt to escape their duty to take care of their parents. It adds that children should pay a monthly allowance (津贴) to their parents if they refuse to take care of them. Besides, the law also allows the elderly to accuse their children if they don't perform their duties well, but it does not name the process or what punishment they might face.
"It may also prove difficult to perform," said Ding Yiyuan from Beijing Yingke Law Firm. He told the Guangzhou Daily Newspaper the law fails to explain the word "frequently". He added that few elderly people are likely to accuse their own children. Some elderly people say it puts too much pressure on those who move away from home for work, study or other opportunities.
41. Lola Wang can't visit her parents frequently because______.
A. she is busy with her job
B. she doesn't like them
C. she wants to save money
D. laws don't allow it
42. The main purpose of Paragraph I is to______.
A. tell readers how cruel Lola Wang is
B. make a summary of the news report
C. lead to the topic of the news report
D. tell readers how busy the youth are
43. That the new national law was passed shows that ______.
A. the thirty years of economic reforms have succeeded in China
B. China's new leaders care about a growing number of the elderly
C. the number of the elderly in China is rapidly increasing
D. many elderly people in China are ignored by their children
44. We can learn from the last two paragraphs that______.
A. some young children are trying not to look after their elderly parents
B. those who fail to look after their parents will be severely punished
C. the new national law can be easily carried out in practice
D. many parents will accuse their children if they don't look after them
45. Which one would be the best title for this news report?
A. Elderly people-burdens of the government
B. Young people-busy bees in China
C. Lola Wang-a busy marketing officer

46. We have three children m our family and think they should learn to care for each other. This movie shows us what a friend should do. It is great for the younger kids, but the older kids won't like it at all. There are no people in the movie. It's completely from the perspective of dogs. And this movie is a short one.
47. This funny movie, directed by David DeCoteau, is about the relationship between two families. You will have a very pleasant experience if you and your kids see the movie. It is great for grandmas and grandkids while some adults think seeing the movie wastes their money and time.
48. We know bullies exist everywhere. The little boy Victor, who has a talent for singing, is a very funny character. The movie is full of humor. No wonder it turns out to be a pleasant film. My whole family love this movie. Even my husband laughed at a few parts. I suggest you efinitely put it on your list.
49. This film is about a girl who needs to save her island and animals from the bad guys. It is hard for her to win the battle. It appears that she will need the help from adults. There are several animal species in danger of disappearing and everyone, even a kid can play a part in rescuing these animals.
50. The movie is very good. It has a good story line. The young boy is brave and smart on Christmas Day. The beginning of the movie is sad but all turns out well. However, although it was filmed in 2012, the speaking dogs with special effects were not done very well. It is too obvious that they put digital mouths on the dogs. The dogs looked as if they had false teeth.

1. A。 The hot weather can ruin these experiences ...
3. D。根据后文“who can’t look after themselves in a car”可知这八个孩子死了是因为他们在炎热的天气里“被留”在汽车里。
Make sure you drink plenty of water.
act as...
So never leave a child, a pet or anyone else who can’t look after themselves in a car...
