II 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Traveling on your own is not always enjoyable. It can even be a little depressing. I have a set of tricks that I use to make my trips fun.
Eating
Going to a restaurant alone is not the best part of the day. You may get bored waiting for food. In order to avoid that, you can take something with you that you can enjoy yourself with. You can take a smartphone, a tablet, a paper book, some work, a piece of paper and a pen.
You are on your own, so what?
Part of the anxiety of being alone, at least for me in the beginning, is to feel lonely. I also feel that people are watching my every move. I think it comes from the fact that I spend a lot of time watching people because I am bored. But are people really watching me? Of course not—they have more interesting things to do than watching my every move. You are alone, so what? Many people travel alone. The only issue is boredom; being alone is not an actual problem.
Hotel Room
The hotel room can be both a refuge and a trap. If you like being in a hotel room watching TV, surfing the Internet or working, it's great. Otherwise avoid the trap of being in your room doing nothing. The best way is to go outside. Go to visit the city. You are in a new place; take advantage of that. Take a camera, go out and enjoy yourself.
Visiting
Visiting a city sounds good. Where shall I start? That is a good question. I found TheCityWanderer.com to be a good answer to that. It is a website that describes what to do in a city if you only have a few hours to spend there. You can also ask the hotel staff. I am sure they can lead you to the best places of interest around the hotel.
26. What does the writer suggest we do when we go to a restaurant alone?
A. Spend some time watching people.
B. Talk with friends over the phone.
C. Take something to kill time.
D. Avoid waiting a long time for food.

B
Anyone can spell a word incorrectly. Most of the time, it is not a serious problem. But for 12-year-old Thomas Hurley III of Connecticut, a spelling mistake cost him a correct answer on the popular TV game show Jeopardy! Hurley appeared during the. Show’s annual Kids Week, which was filmed in February. His episode was broadcast last Wednesday. For the final question, Hurley and others were asked, “Abraham Lincoln called this document, which took effect in 1863, "a fit and necessary war measure.”
Hurley knew the answer: the Emancipation Proclamation. But when writing it, he added an extra “t”. The show's host Alex Trebek told the boy "he misspelled it badly" and that “the judges are ruling against you". Hurley finished in second place, leaving with $2,000. "I was pretty upset that I was cheated out of the final question," he said. "It was just a spelling mistake."
The show's rules say that misspellings are allowed as long as they do not change the pronunciation of the word. The extra "t" in the word 4 “Emancipation” changed the word's pronunciation. All contestants had been informed of the rules before the game began.
Even if he had spelled the word correctly, Hurley would not have won. Fellow 12-year-old Skyler Hornback, a seventh-grader from Kentucky, finished far ahead, and even set the all-time record for kids on Jeopardy! with $66,600 in winnings. Hornback's victory was also the third-largest one-day total in the game's history.
Since the show aired, viewers have turned to social media to express their opinions. Thousands of comments have been posted on the show's Facebook page. Some have taken pity on Hurley, saying that Trebek was too hard on the boy or saying that spelling should not count. But others have defended (为……辩护) the show.
