My goal for this Back to School Page is to create a resource (资源) that is extremely helpful to new teachers and first-year teachers. I also would like this to be a place where veteran or somewhat experienced teachers can come to find fresh new ideas. Teachers are very generous people, who enjoy sharing their ideas. That is why you will find so much wonderful information here. Some of the things are my ideas, but a number of the ideas come from teachers of different grades and places. I just put them on a pretty page and organize them so that we could refer back to them each year. We have many thanks to the wonderful teachers that have an idea or a comment on one of these pages.
As you get ready for the new school year, why not write down your ideas or send us something you created? Share with other teachers around the world. New teachers feel free to add an idea. You may have some of the best ideas. I was once in your shoes and was lucky to start my profession working with all veteran teachers. I was the youngest teacher there! They were very willing to listen to yet another idea coming out of my mouth. I can imagine I was pretty annoying then. Some of them even used my ideas and came to me for advice. I know because of that group of people, I am a confident teacher today! They made me confident the first day I was on the job.
So share your ideas with us. The people that visit this site are just like that group of teachers I started to work with. By the way, I am referring to the staff at Silver Ridge Elementary School in Silverdale Washington. They are far away, but very close to my heart!
Please send your ideas to smilecdg@malexcite.com. Thank you for coming by!

Last month I had a meeting in Seattle, so I decided to bring the whole family and make a trip out of it. We had always wanted to take the train down the coast, so we decided this was the perfect opportunity. We flew up to Seattle, had a few fun days to explore the city and then boarded a train in Seattle in the morning.
We arrived at the train station about 25 minutes before the train left. There were only a few other people in line, so getting on the train was so easy.
The scenery was beautiful and exciting. It was so great to sit next to the window and watch the country go by, which was very enjoyable. The train traveled all along the water as we headed south to Oregon.
The best part about the train was that you could get up and walk around to do stuff, and actually there was a lot of stuff to do. You could go to the observation car. There you could relax and watch the scenery. They also had a theater car where they were showing Arthur Christmas, which kept the kids entertained. There was also the dining car that served meals. The agent came around before every meal and made a reservation (预订). The food was fine, but not amazing. But everything was served in a way as if you were at a restaurant. It was fun to eat with a view of Mount Hood outside your window.
When it was time to sleep, the agent helped us fold down our beds into double bunk beds (双层铺位). I didn't get a picture of this, but it felt comfortable.

My happy place is my home in central Auckland. I travel quite a lot. Last year I went to Europe and the States a couple of times and I had a few other trips - but part of the reason I love to travel is that I get to come home afterwards. It's really nice to come home and go out into my garden and wander around with my plants and my flowers.
I get a feeling of happiness when I come home, knowing I can just sit on my couch and read a book. I write in my study and in the garden as well. It's really relaxing being in my own space. I've been here for three or four years. It takes a while to get everything exactly as you like it in a house. Now my study is set up as how I want it, my garden is how I want it, and I have a library room where I have all my books. It’s really comfortable.
When I moved into the house one of the first things I did was to get wall-to-wall shelves built in the library for all my books. For a long time my books were in storage in my parents' garage. I love going into my library. It's a really calm place. It has not only got many books, but also has got things I've picked up during my travelling.
There's a lot of me in that room and there's a lot of me in my study as well because I spend most of the day there. I love my desk - I've had it since I was a teenager. And I have a thesaurus (分类词典) I've had so many years. I have my maps, my dictionary, my research notes, my pens and paper, my notes and my own books.
When I'm writing, when I'm deep into a book, I tend to disappear for a while. I'm able to be absent-minded wherever I am - if I'm stuck in an airport, I'll find myself a little corner and go for it. But my favourite place to write is at home. I'm happy when I'm here.

Max Valverde has designed a special cap to deal with bad hair days. The inventor came up with the super hat for people to solve the problem, who wake up with a loose hairstyle in the morning.
The morning-head invention is shaped just like a shower cap. It is made of an absorbent material that acts like a sponge (海绵) when it is placed under a tap. It can wet hair in seconds. Once the hair is wet, it can be dried and combed (梳头) into place without any mess.
Mr Valverde said, “I shower every night, and every morning I wake up with terrible bed hair. I would either have to take another shower, which was wasteful and taking much time, or wet my hair in the sink, which never really worked properly and made a mess."
After wetting my hair in the sink for more than ten years, I spent a weekend trying to find a most effective way to wet the hair and cure the bed head. I needed to find a material that could hold a lot of water and then release that water when pressure was applied. You add water to the inner of the cap and wait a couple of seconds for that water to be taken in by the cap. You then put it on your head, rub it around for a few seconds and your hair is then wet as if you just toweled off after a shower.
The main users of the cap are people who shower at night, parents getting their kids ready for school, and people riding motorcycles or bicycles. It can also be used on people who take naps and people with hat hair.
( ) 41. Why did Max Valverde design the cap?
A. To keep track of fashion.
B. To deal with a bad hairstyle.
C. To save money of having hair cut.
D. To improve people’s memory.
( ) 42. What's the special about the cap?
A. It looks like a shower cap.
B. It is intended for lazy men.
C. It can wet hair without water.
D. It's made of sponge material.
( ) 43. According to Mr Valverde, ________.
A. he was too busy to wash his hair regularly
B. it took him ten years to create the morning-head cap
C. he would like to give people the caps for free
D. the cap can comb the hair within seconds
( ) 44. The last paragraph mainly shows us ______.
A. the different sizes of the cap
B. the advantages of the cap
C. the users of the cap
D. the price of the cap
( ) 45. How does the writer develop the text?

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
Of course, reading is one area for you to learn English well. The following are things you should do to learn English effectively outside of the classroom.
Take a dictionary with you so that you can look up unfamiliar words. Then, you can write these words down in a notebook and use them in a conversation. And when you try to use them again, they will come to you much more easily.
Newspapers, magazines and books all help you learn English well. If you're just starting, try reading children’s books to start. This is especially helpful for people just starting to learn English, whom there are some books specifically written for. The words are quite simple and yet effective enough. If you use them, you can learn to speak simple English quite quickly.
When you first begin to read English, don't try to understand every word. Instead, simply try to get a general idea of what you are reading; other words in the sentence will help you do this. If you don't understand the first time you read something, you can always go back later and use your dictionary to look up the words you don't quite know.

Today, my classmates and I visited the West Lake, and we met at the school, set off by bus at eight and it took us an hour to get there. When we arrived, we took many photos; there were many foreigners there, so I talked with them in English and I could make myself understood, which made me feel more confident about my spoken English. When we saw some people throwing away rubbish, we went up to stop them, and we also offered to collect the rubbish and put it into the dustbins. At about four, we started to go back to school.
