Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from.
Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called "hamburgers", especially when they are not made with ham (火腿) About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They didn't speak good English. But they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what they were. The Germans didn't understand the question and answered, "We come from Hamburg." One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of bread with beef in them and started selling them. Such bread came to be called "hamburgers". Today, "hamburgers" are sold in many countries around the world.
Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. This reason, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary.
(1) Hamburg is _____.
A.a kind of food B.a round piece of beef
C.the name of a country D.a city in Germany
(2) Which of the following is TRUE
A.Few Americans like hamburgers.
B.Hamburgers are made with ham.
C.Hamburgers were first sold a century ago.
D.Hamburgers were some people.
(3) The main idea of the second paragraph is about _____.
A.where the word "hamburgers" comes from
B.how to make hamburgers
C.the differences between hamburgers and Hamburg
D.which restaurant sold the first hamburger
(4) Which of the following can be found in any large English dictionary
A.Where Germans came from.
B.Where the new words came from.
C.The reason why a new word has a certain meaning.
D.Why English is spoken all over the world.
(10分) Each Indian tribe (部落) had a different language. Many Indians never learned any language except their own. Do you know how Indians from different tribes talked to each other They had two ways to talk without sound. One way was by sign language; the other was by signals.
Sign language is a way talking by signs. Indians used it when they met strangers. In this way, they could find out whether the stranger was a friend or an enemy.
Indians usually used signals when they wanted to send messages to someone far away. To make signals, an Indian might use a pony (小马). He might use a blanket. Or he might use smoke, a mirror or fire arrows (箭).
To signal that he had seen many animals, an Indian rode his pony in a large circle. Sometimes the Indian gave a signal like this and then went away to hide. This meant that there was danger.
The blanket signal was visible from far away. An Indian held two corners of a blanket in his hands. Then he began to swing (摇动) the blanket from side to side in front of him. An Indian could send many different signals with his blanket.
He could also send many signals with a mirror to warn someone of danger or to get the attention of a person far away. But he also used it to send messages in code. Of course, mirrors could be used only when the sun was shining. At night, Indians used fire arrows for signaling.
An Indian also sent signals with smoke. He made a small fire of dry wood. Then he put grass or green branches on it. He held a blanket over the fire for a minute. When he removed the blanket from the fire, there was a cloud of smoke. The number of clouds of smoke told his message in code.
Now you can see that Indians didn't need to learn each other's language. They could talk to one another by using signals or sign language.
(1) Many Indians learned _____.
A.no languages B.only one language
C.some languages D.many languages
(2) When Indians met strangers, they used _____.
A.their tribe language B.English

C.it was pretty D.it could be seen from far away
(5) When the Indian _____, a cloud of smoke was made and the number of clouds of smoke told his message in code.
A.used dry wood to start a fire
B.put grass or green branches on the fire
C.held a blanket over the fire for a minute
D.removed the blanket from the fire
(6) Indians didn't need to learn each other's language because _____.
A.they were good at making themselves understood
B.they could use signals or sign language
C.different tribes lived far away and never met each other
D.they never communicated with one another
(10分) There are about 7,000 languages spoken around the world. All the languages are different from one another in sounds, vocabularies and also structures. That leads to an ancient question: Does the language we speak shape the way we think Charlemagne, Holy Roman emperor, said, "To have a second language is to have a second mind." However, Shakespeare once had Juliet say, "What's in a name A rose by any other name would smell just sweet."
Recently, researches have been done to answer this question. Kuuk Thaayorre people in Australia don't use words like "left" or "right". Instead, everything is in directions: north, south, east and west. They would say, "Oh, there's an ant on your south-west leg." The way they say "hello" is "Which way are you going " The answer would be "North-east in the far distance. How about you " People speaking languages like this can always tell directions correctly.
Language makes a difference in how people think about time. In a research, people speaking different languages are asked to organize pictures of a man in time order. An English speaker may organize pictures from left to right. But speakers of Hebrew (希伯来语) may do it in the opposite direction. This has something to do with writing direction. How would the Kuuk Thaayorre people organize these pictures For them, the order of pictures changes every time they face different directions.
Languages also influence how people describe events. If a man broke a plate by accident, English speakers may say, "He broke the plate." People speaking Spanish (西班牙语) are more likely to say, "The plate broke itself." This difference has a consequence that makes people speaking different languages pay attention to different things. In this example, English speakers will remember who did it, but Spanish speakers are more likely to remember it was an accident. Two people see the same event but end up remembering different details about the scene.
Speakers of different languages think differently. You could ask yourself, "Why do I think the way I do " or "How could I think differently "
(1) In Paragraph 1, Juliet's words are mentioned to _____.
A.give a different answer B.describe the smell of a rose
C.support Charlemagne's idea D.introduce works by Shakespeare
(2) The purpose of using Kuuk Thaayorre people as an example is to prove _____.
A.Hebrew speakers write from right to left
B.words like "left" and "right" are necessary
C.English speakers have a poor sense of direction
D.language influences ideas of direction and time
(3) The underlined word "consequence" in Paragraph 4 means "_____".
A.fact B.purpose C.result D.advantage
(4) Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 4
A.English speakers are good at remembering accidents.
B.The language of English has more details than Spanish.
C.Spanish speakers can always tell who caused accidents.
D.Details from two witnesses at one scene may be different.
(5) The article is mainly about how language _____.
A.helps us find directions B.attracts human attention
C.changes in different areas D.shapes the way we think
(10分) Each year on Feb. 21, UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) holds an International Mother Language Day (IMLD). The event is to help people to pay attention to the disappearance of the world's languages: many of them are disappearing each year. UNESCO sees this as a terrible fact.
What happens when a language dies out Something great is lost—not just sounds and marks but the way that people understand the world and communicate with each other. We keep different cultures and traditions through languages. Kill a language and all these are killed too.
Through IMLD, more and more people come to realize the terrible situation and try to stop it. Google's 2018 Endangered (濒临灭绝的) Languages Project is a good example. Many speakers and protectors of endangered languages upload (上传) texts, audios and videos to the project website. They want to introduce the way that people communicate and express themselves around the world.
The Myaamia Project is the same kind of effort to revive the language spoken by the Miami tribes (部落) of the United States. Project members work to encourage people to study and communicate with this language, which died out in the 1960s.
These activities give life to those endangered languages. People who work to keep languages alive are not limited to the past. Many young people design apps and use social media to support their activities. They "spread the word" to save the word.
So, while the problem of disappearing languages remains a very serious one, there is hope. We all have a special feeling of our mother language. This is why we should remember the wise words of late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela: "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart."
(1) UNESCO holds IMLD every year in order to help people to _____.
A.learn and use endangered languages
B.show their talents in learning languages
C.practice reading skills of mother languages
D.realize the situation of endangered languages
(2) What did people do in Google's 2018 Endangered Languages Project
A.Discuss how to make good use of Google.
B.Offer online courses on endangered languages.
C.Share materials about endangered languages online.
D.Translate endangered languages into mother languages.
(3) What does the underlined word "revive" mean in Chinese in Paragraph 4
A.创造 B.学习 C.复活 D.清除
(4) What can we infer (推断) from Paragraph 5
A.It is more difficult to protect endangered languages.
B.The disappearance of languages has already stopped.
C.Young people don't care about endangered languages.
D.Young people have creative ways to protect languages.
(5) The writer mentions Nelson Mandela's words in order to _____.
A.tell the importance of one's mother language
