You need some bread and milk. But half an hour later, you leave the supermarket with a trolley(手推车)full of food. What games do supermarkets play to make us spend so much money
The tricks usually start before you walk in. Outside the supermarket entrance, anybody who walks past can smell warm, fresh bread. That makes us hungry and ready to buy lots of food, not just bread.
Now you're inside and,of course,a small basket would be fine, but all they have are trolleys. And of course the problem with a trolley is that it looks sad and lonely with just one or two products inside. So we may fill it with something. In fact, supermarket trolleys are actually getting bigger so that we buy more.
Of course, many people shop in supermarkets because they think everything is cheaper than in other shops. So supermarkets offer very low prices on some things but then have higher prices for other products. One new trick is to put red stickers on products.Customers usually connect red stickers with lower prices,so the red stickers are easy to be noticed, even when there is no reduction!Interestingly, this trick appears to work more with men than with women.
There is a story behind the position of everything in the supermarket. For example, customers often go only to buy milk. So they put it right at the back, forcing you to go past hundreds of shelves full of other products. The position of products on each shelf is also important. The most expensive products are usually at eye-level so you see these immediately. The exception is anything that children might like. These products are on lower shelves so that kids can see them.
Apart from what you see and smell in a supermarket, how about what you listen to In most supermarkets they have soft, slow music. It's so relaxing that you slow down and spend more time(and money)in the store. You also move more slowly when the supermarket is busy. Experts suggest it's better to shop when it's quieter,on a Monday or a Tuesday for example. And be careful with queues at the checkouts. These are sometimes deliberate(故意的),to make you buy something from the checkout shelves while you wait.
So,next time you go into your local supermarket, remember these tricks and see if you can come with just the things you went for.

My wife and I used to feel that it was impossible to be a true friend to someone whose name we didn't know. How wrong we were!Years of Sunday-morning bus trips through the city with the same group of“nameless”people have changed our thinking. Before the bus starts,we all join in a conversation:Where's the silent woman who sits up front and never responds(反应)to our cheery greetings Here she comes. Her worn clothing suggests she doesn't have much money to spare, but she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver.
We get smiles from a Mexican couple as they get on the bus hand in hand. When they get off, they're still holding hands. The woman was pregnant(怀孕的)late last year, and one day her change of shape showed that she'd had the child. We even felt a little pride in the family.
For many months,we wondered if we'd be able to establish the same friendship with the silent woman at the front of the bus. Then, one evening,we went to a fish restaurant. We were shown to a table alongside someone sitting alone. It was the woman from the bus.
We greeted her in a friendly way we'd shown all year, but this time her face softened, then a shy smile. When she spoke, the words escaped embarrassedly(局促不安地)from her lips. All at once we realized why she hadn't spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.
Over dinner,we learned the story of a single mother with a disabled son who was receiving special care away from home. She missed him very much, she explained.
“I love him ... and he loves me,even though he doesn't express it very well.”she said in a low voice.“Lots of us have that problem, don't we We don't say what we want to say, what we should be saying. And that's not good enough."The candles flared on our tables. Our fish had never tasted better. The atmosphere grew pleasant, and when we said goodbye as friends—we shared names.

Pressure is a serious problem in today's world. Students in our class are under too much pressure.
Some students can't get on well with their classmates, while others may worry about their exams. I'm always under pressure, too. My parents send me to all kinds of after-classes on weekends. Last Sunday,I had a talk with my mother about my pressure. I told her I worked hard and felt tired. I needed time to relax. My mother understood me at last. So I think it's necessary for us to talk with parents to solve the problem.
That's all. Thank you!
