第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
The pursuit of happiness comes with the pursuit of a longer life. This can simply take place with some benefiting life changes like changing your diet. Limiting the intake of processed foods and red meat to be replaced by healthier choices like fruits and vegetables has been the way to go.
Eliminate Sugar
Start this journey by removing sugar from your daily diet. According to Dina Aronson, a dietician, this step is said to be centred on dietary analysis and health behaviour change.
Eat what you love
It is no news that eating fruits and vegetables are good for a healthy diet although they are not the most favourite. But for one to groom a healthy way of eating, you need to enjoy eating these healthy options.
Know what you eat
That occasional nibble (一小口) that we have learned to do is a killer when trying to eat right. This is done often without being aware of what we throw into our mouths. Awareness of what we eat becomes the top priority as the first step to eating right. Do not be in a hurry to be perfect but start small and this leads to healthy eating.
Meat Free
Another step that may be hard is to gradually go for plant based options or foods that are rich in grains. Whole grains help to increase the blood sugar in slow paces, thereby giving the brain the needed energy to make the day and controlling late-night eating.

Women have been making scientific discoveries since ancient times. Twelve women have won the Nobel Prize for Science, one of the highest honors in the world. Some women scientists never married, some worked with their husbands, and others raised large families. It has been difficult for women to be successful scientists.
In the early 1800s in England, Mary Anning became one of the first women recognized for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth. Mary and her father collected fossils(化石) in their village on the south coast of Great Britain. Fossils are parts of plants or animals that have been saved in rocks for millions of years.
When she was only twelve years old. Mary became the first person to find the almost complete skeletons(骨架) of several animals that no longer existed on the earth. She didn’t become famous for her discoveries at that time because she often sold her fossils to get money to support her family.
In 1891,a young Polish woman named Marie Sklodowska traveled to Paris to study physics. She did so because she could not get a college education in Poland. She began working in the laboratory of a man named Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre Curie got married and made many discoveries together. Nowadays more and more people are talking about genetically modified foods (GM foods). GM foods develop from genetically modified organisms(有机体), which have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise where an organism is exposed to chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change. For many people, the high-tech production raises all kinds of environmental, ethical(伦理的), health and safety problems. Particularly in countries with long farming traditions, the idea seems against nature.
In fact, GM foods are already very much a part of our lives. They were first put on the market in 1996. A third of the corn and more than half the cotton grown in the U.S. last year was the product of biotechnology, according to the Department of Agriculture. More than 65 million acres of genetically modified crops will be planted in the U.S. this year. The genetic genie is out of the bottle.
However, like any new product entering the food chain, GM foods must be subjected to careful testing. In wealthy countries, the debate about biotech is not so fierce by the fact that they have a large number of foods to choose from, and a supply that goes beyond the needs. In developing countries desperate to feed fast-growing and underfed populations, the matter is simpler and much more urgent: do the benefits of biotech outweigh the risks
The statistics on population growth and hunger are disturbing. Last year the world ’s population reached 6 billion. The U.N. states that nearly 800 million people around the world are unhealthy. About 400 million women of childbearing age don’t have enough iron, which means their babies are exposed to various birth defects. As many as 100 million children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, a leading cause of blindness.
How can biotech help Genetic engineering is widely used to produce plants and animals with better nutritional values. Biotechnologists have developed genetically modified rice and they are working on other kinds of nutritionally improved crops. Biotech can also improve farming productivity in places where food shortages are caused by crop damage attributable to drought, poor soil and crop viruses.
1.The passage mainly talks about ________.
A.the world’s food problem B.the development in biotech
C.the genetically modified foods D.the way to solve food shortages
2.According to the passage, GM foods ________.
A.are far better than naturally grown foods
B.will replace naturally grown foods
C.may help to solve the problem of poor nutrition
D.can cause serious trouble in developing countries
3.The underlined sentence “The genetic genie is out of the bottle.” in Paragraph 2 probably means that ________.
A.GM foods are available everywhere
B.the technology in producing GM foods is advanced
C.genetic technology may have uncontrollable powers
D.genetic technology has come out of laboratories into markets
4.What’s the writer’s attitude towards GM foods
A.Cautious. B.Enthusiastic. C.Disapproving. D.Unbelievable.

“After we got married, we rarely had time to go dancing. But every once in a while, after the children went to bed, we’d pull out the record player and dance in the backyard under the stars.”
Leaning back in his chair, Josh appeared to be enjoying the story. “Wow, Granddad was quite a romantic guy!”
“Yeah. He was very romantic. I still miss him dearly.” Eloise shook her head, attempting to get rid of the lonely feeling that was beginning to form.“Well, it’s getting late now. Let’s get some sleep.” “I’ve really enjoyed hearing the story about you and Granddad,” Josh hugged his grandma. Then he went back to his room.

With everything ready, all he had to do was wait for the starry night to come.
After finishing dinner that night, Josh invited and led his grandma to the backyard. Eloise gasped in astonishment at what came into view — paper lanterns glowing against the sky, a small TV tray holding an old-fashioned record player and a vase of handpicked flowers — and her thoughts flew back to the past days when her husband was alive. Hearing Josh’s “Happy Birthday, Grandma!”, she came out of her trance and hugged him. Then Josh held out his hand and asked gently, “Would you like to dance, Eloise ” With bleary eyes, Eloise replied,“I’d love to, Josh.”
