A
You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving. If you give and give without making time to fill your own needs, then it's likely you will burn out, or feel upset. When you take and take without giving anything back, you never feel a sense of achievement, so you are always searching for ways to fill the feeling of emptiness in your life.
The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving so as to achieve real happiness is to know and then live by your values. I break values up into two groups which I call “being” and “having” values. Your “being” values arc the character traits(特征) of the ideal person you would like to be. An example of some "being" values are: kind, loving, generous, inspirational, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values, you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by “being” a positive role model. Mastering these “being” character traits becomes your life purpose.
Your “having” values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, support, being valued or financial security. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life.
When you make a commitment to live by your “being” values, it becomes easier to make conscious choices rather than reactionary(保守的)ones. If your usual habit is to complain about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, meditate(沉思),or set a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be this is the key to personal power.
When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, but you reinforce(增强) your chosen beliefs. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you.
1.According to the text, by acting on your own “being” values, you will __________.
A.gain a lot of power B.fill your own needs C.seek all human virtues D.form positive personality
2.Which of the following does NOT belong to your “having” values
A.Your success in the competition. B.The support from your friends.
C.Your own peaceful mind. D.The friendship with others.
3.What can be inferred from the text
A.“Having” values are better than“being” values.
B.The way other people think of you decides who you are.
C.A calm person does not choose to complain easily.
D.A responsible person does not care about financial security.

What do Tom Sawyer and jumping frogs have in common Stories about both of them were created by one man : Mark Twain. Twain was four years old when his family moved to Hannitel,Missouri, located on the west bank of the Mississippi. Twain grew up there and was fascinated with life along the river the steamboats, the giant lumber(木头) rafts, and the people who worked on them.
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is one of Twain's best loved short stories, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of his most famous novels. Both these works are celebrated by events held during National Tom Sawyer Days, which originated in the late 1950s and became national in the 1960s. Children enter their frogs in the jumping contest during National Tom Sawyer Days. There’s also a fence painting contest to see who can paint the fastest. The idea for this contest comes from a scene in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, in which Tom has been told to paint the fence in front of the house he lives in. It's a beautiful day, and he would rather be doing anything else. As his friends walk by, he makes them believe that it’s fun to pain’t,and they join in the “fun”. Over the past few years I've had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been making changes to my brain. I'm not thinking the way I used to think. I can feel it most strongly when I'm reading. Involving myself in a book or a lengthy(冗长的)article used to be easy. That's rarely the case anymore.
I think I know what's going on. For over a decade, I've been spending lots of time online. The Web has been a godsend to me as a writer. Research that once required days in the rooms of libraries can now be done in minutes by a few Google searches. Even when I'm not working, I'm scanning headlines or just tripping from link to link.
The Net is becoming a universal medium where information flows through my eyes and ears and into mind. The perfect recall of silicon memory (硅制存储器)can be a blessing to thinking. But that comes at a price. As the media theorist Marshall Mcluhan pointed out, media are not just passive channels of information. They supply the staff of thought, but they also shape the process of thought. And what the Net seems to be doing is weakening my ability for concentration. Once I was a driver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a flying swallow.
I'm not the only one. When I mention my troubles with reading to acquaintances, Bruce Friedman, a blogger, also has described how the Internet has changed his mental habits. His thinking has taken on a "staccato (不连贯的)" quality. "I can't read War and Peace anymore," he admitted. "I've lost the ability to do that."
A recently published study suggests that when reading online, we tend to become "more decoders (解码器)of information. We are not only what we read; we are how we read.
(1).According to the passage, the author thinks _______.
A.the Net is merely a headache
B.he can no longer die but swim shallowly
C.the deep reading in the past has become a struggle
D.other people around rarely have similar feelings like him
(2).What is the author's attitude towards the Internet
A.Thoroughly passive. B.Totally puzzled. C.Gladly approving. D.Evidently worried.
(3).From the passage, the more people use the Web,_______ .
A.the more mental habits can be improved B.the more they have to fight to stay focused
C.the more they are influenced in shape D.the more online activities they can enjoy
(4).Which of the following can best summarize the text
A.Is the Net gradually changing us
B.Long articles are hard to read nowadays.
C.Do people lack concentration to cover Web pages
D.More Web involvement results from attention distraction(分心).

Excited screams of joy, the sounds of two happy little girls playing on the sand, ran across the beach. But I walked along, barely aware of them. I'd come to this remote beach on my sailboat, a place to escape. My wife and I had recently separated, our marriage in trouble. I worried about my two boys, just six and eight. It seemed like forever since Td heard them laugh. But I didn't know what to do to make things better.
"Help! Help!" The girls shouted out. I'd meant to tell them to stay away from the dangerous water. Now one of them was in the ocean, beyond the surf line. I could just hear her screams over the waves. Any second now she'd be swept away. I ran across the sand as fast as I could. The other girl was at the edge of the surf, yelling.
"Wait! Stop! Don't go any farther!" I charged(向……方向冲去) into the waves and was reaching for her when a wall of water dashed over us. For half a second I saw her disappear under another big wave. Tm a strong swimmer, but I could feel the wave pulling me hard. I swam to her and seized her, her little body shaking. But where was the other girl I saw a waving arm. A head broke the surface, not far away. The arms of the girl I'd rescued were wrapped desperately around my neck. She was breathing in sobs. "Let go of my neck. I need you on my back. Hold my shoulders so I can swim to your friend."
She loosed her hands and I shifted her to my back. ''She's my sister, Sarah, and I am Lillian,'' she said. For a moment I thought of my boys. How much they loved each other. How much I loved them.
I looked across the water and saw a small head after a big wave. I quickened my swimming, fighting for each breath. Tiny arms pressed against my shoulders. I reached out and held the second little girl. She was in total tiredness, taking deep breaths and crying quietly.

A
由第二段中的“By acting on these values…a positive role model. ”可知D项符合题意。
2.推理判断题。由题干中的关键词“having”values 定位到文章第三段“Your ‘having’ values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, support, 'being' valued or financial security.” “having” values是指你为了感到幸福而所必需的一些感受,包括友谊、成就、他人的支持、被认同感以及经济上的安全感等。 只有C项没有涉及,故选C项。
3.推理判断题。由文章第四段中的“A calm person might go for a walk, meditate(沉思),or set a time limit before responding.”
B
答案:1.C; 2.C; 3.A; 4.C
由第二段第二句“In fact, he was not expected to live through the first winter.(实际上,没人想到他能活过第—个冬天)”可知,选C项。
2.由文中第二段后半部分“As a boy...He was nearly drowned nine times.”
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer 与The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn的时期,并不在晚年,故排除B项。 文章最后一句“He wore nothing but white from head to foot...”
C
答案:1.B; 2.B; 3.D; 4.A
从第一段第四句“Twain grew up there and was fascinated with life along the river...”
由第二段中“There’s also a fence painting contest to see who can paint the fastest."可推知能在最短的时间内漆完篱笆的人将获胜,故选D项。
4.推理判断题。至今仍伫立在马克 吐温孩童时期的家外的那片白色篱笆能够说明末段首句的结论:Although the story of Tom Sawyer is fiction, it’s based on facts.
I'm not thinking the way I used to think. I can feel it most strongly when I'm reading Involving myself in a book or a lengthy(冗长的) article used to be easy.
I'm not the only one. When I mention my troubles with reading to acquaintances, Bruce Friedman, a blogger, also has described how the Internet has changed his mental habits. His thinking has taken on a "staccato(不连贯的)"quality. "I can't read War and Peace anymore," he admitted. "I've lost the ability to do that."(我不是唯一一个。
And what the Net seems to be doing is weakening my ability for concentration.

As far as I am concerned, judging by its value, we can't ignore the important role that money plays in daily life. However, even though we can't live without money, it isn't everything. I think that what counts about money is what we do with it. To be honest, money is a good servant and a bad master.
If I had one million dollars, I would think it my obligation to start some schools for children in poor areas, because they are badly in need of good education. I was totally shocked when I saw it on TV that so many children in China are too poor to go to school. Also, I would give away some money to those in need. Anyway, it's better to give than to receive. Just doing so contributes to building a more harmonious society.
The reason why I would do these things is that money itself can't bring us happiness. Only by helping others can we eventually achieve a real sense of happiness and pleasure.
第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
I floated on my back and looked toward the shore. I couldn't see anyone. We were too far away from the beach. No way could I swim that far, not with two girls hanging on to my body. I was close to total tiredness. But there was no time to wait. I told Lillian to circle her arms around my shoulders and asked Sarah to hold my neck with both hands. I knew I had to get these kids safe. I swam as hard as I could, but the weight of the girls grew heavier and heavier. I opened my mouth to take a breath, but instead swallowed water. I took one last look at the beach.
Paragraph 2:
Luckily, now I could make out three people on the shore. So I tried my best to cry out for help. After a while, I woke up. An elderly man was trying to drag me out of the water. Two women were running toward the shore, each carrying a child.
