Have you heard of Hispanic Heritage Month (拉美裔文化月) We break down this monthlong celebration from September 15 to October 15 that recognizes the different Hispanic community in the United States and the varied and meaningful contributions they bring to our country and culture.
According to the Hispanic Heritage Month (拉美裔文化月) official website, it is observed “by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America”. For generations, Hispanics have contributed to the food, music, business, science, and culture that we know as American, and the 30 days that make up Hispanic Heritage Month each fall is just one opportunity to show these achievements.
Hispanics are the country’s second-largest racial group, behind white non-Hispanics according to the latest 2020 census (普查). Hispanics now account for 18.7 percent of the U.S. population, up 2.4 percent in the previous decade with 62.1 million Hispanics living across America with big concentrations in New York, California, Texas and Florida.
Hispanic Heritage Month first started as a week when it was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. According to Congressional history, the week was created to bring attention and awareness to “Hispanic-American contributions to the United States”, along with networking opportunities for “grassroots and civil rights activists inside and outside the Hispanic-American community”.
Almost 20 years later, Representative Esteban Torres of California, a proud Mexican-American, gave a bill to expand it into Hispanic Heritage Month saying supporters of the bill “want the American people to learn of our heritage. We want the public to know that we share a legacy (遗产) with the rest of the country, a legacy that includes artists, writers, Olympic champions, and leaders in business, government, cinema, and science”. That bill didn’t pass, but Senator Paul Simon of Illinois gave a similar bill that President Ronald Reagan signed into law after that in 1988 creating now what Hispanic Heritage Month is.
4.What is the aim of Hispanic Heritage Month
A. To pass the values of Hispanics.
B. To celebrate the harvest of each fall.

There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants(移民)bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride in their culture and means of coping with homesickness.
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional cuisine. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some ingredients needed to make traditional cuisine may not be readily available, so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell cuisine to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes to the original cuisine to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the cuisine.
We should not only embrace our heritage through our culture’s food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.
8.What’s the function of the traditional food
A. It helps motivate homesickness.
B. It shows culture identity.
C. It reflects a country’s history.
D. It shows a community’s superiority.
9.Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurant
A. To attach cultural importance to their dishes.
B. To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.
C. To make the dishes popular among customers.
D. To present their own food culture in a new way.
10.What’s the author’s attitude towards different food cultures
A. Negative. B. Balanced.
C. Unfair. D. Unchangeable.
11.Which column does the passage come from
A. Space B. Science C. Food D. Entertainment
D
Let’s face it—most of us can’t resist a cup of tea or coffee sometimes. They’re a perfect pick-me-up and comforter. But there are alternative drinks, so why have we chosen these as our go-to drinks to soothe our busy lives And which one is superior
Let’s start with tea-it’s the second most consumed drink in the world. For many-especially the British-having a “cuppa” is a daily practice. The caffeine contained in it helps wake you up in the morning, and throughout the day we’ll make a brew to distract us from our work. And according to some scientists, habitual tea consumption can have some health benefits. Andrew Steptoe, a professor from University College London’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, told BBC Food that drinking black tea “may speed up recovery from the daily stresses in life. . . but we do not know what ingredients of tea were responsible for these effects on stress recovery and relaxation”.
Coffee is tea’s “trendier” rival(对手). Its popularity has grown over the years, and this is reflected in the number of coffee shops we see around-places to hang out, do business or catch up with friends. Coffee can taste great and can be served in many ways, but it’s sometimes how you have it that can be seen as a status symbol or the preserve of hipsters(潮人)I Of course, it gives you a strong caffeine hit-roughly double of that contained in tea. However, too much can lead to anxiety. Sleep scientist Matt Walker told the BBC that caffeine can decrease the amount of restorative deep sleep you have.
But some scientists say drinking coffee-and green tea-can also be good for us. Researchers at Osaka University linked drinking a daily cup of coffee with a lower risk of death among both stroke survivors and healthy people, while drinking seven or more cups of green tea was associated with a lower risk of death among both heart attack and stroke survivors. So, whether we turn to coffee or tea for its taste, its image or as a lifestyle choice, it could be a lifesaver!
12.What does the underlined word “soothe“ in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Change. B. Relieve. C. Describe. D. Copy-
13.It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that ____.
A. tea is the most consumed drink in the world
B. the caffeine in tea can cure people of illness
C. tea helps promote our careers and friendship
D. the ingredients of tea help people forget trouble
14.Which of the following may Matt Walker agree with
A. Too much coffee is not good for sleep.
B. Black tea speeds up recovery from the daily stresses.
C. Coffee is surely more popular than tea.
D. Drinking a daily cup of coffee guarantees a long life.
15.In which section can you read the passage on a magazine website
A. Technology. B. Entertainment. C. Business. D. Health.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy who is about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell, "How stupid you are! You're good at nothing." David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs.Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn't give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment "well done" from Mrs. Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written.
When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs.Brown the next morning. And again he was praised.
David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs.Brown to read and correct them for him. Mrs.Brown always corrected the mistakes he had made and gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs.Brown's encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
Paragraph 1:
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. ____________________

Paragraph 2:
The mother was ashamed when she heard that.__________________________________________

第三部分 写作
第一节
答案:Dear Jack,
I am very delighted to know that you want to start a club to carry forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture. Personally, I recommend a Chinese calligraphy club. And my reasons are as follows.
To start, in our nation, calligraphy has always been considered as one of the most significant arts, which will help foreigners to know more about Chinese culture. Second, unlike doing Taichi which needs a big space and specific costumes, practicing calligraphy can be easy to operate. All it asks is a table with the Four Treasures of the Study, which refer to brush, inkstick, paper and inkstone. Finally, practicing calligraphy is a good way to improve students’ perseverance, for it needs patience to practice.
In a word, starting a calligraphy club is definitely advantageous. And I highly recommend starting a calligraphy club.

第二节
答案:
One possible version
Paragraph 1:
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs.Brown. In the end, he said, "I couldn't have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing."
Paragraph 2:
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn't have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, "Thank you for your advice. I'll never say such things to him again. Instead, I'll find out what he's good at and encourage him." The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make some difference to the boy.
