Five Ancient Chinese Poems about Spring
As the winter chill still lingers through early spring longing for warm days has sprung up everywhere. Before the flowers are in full blossom here is a collection of ancient Chinese poems picturing the revival of life during spring. The English translations used in this article are from Chinese translator Xu Yuanchong.
Spring Morning-by Meng Haoran(689-740)of the Tang Dynasty(618-907)
This spring morning in bed I’m lying
Not to awake till birds are crying
After one night of wind and showers
How many are the fallen flowers
Written in a Village South of the Capital-by Cui Hu(772-846)of the Tang Dynasty
In this house on this day last year a pink face vied
In beauty with the pink peach blossoms side by side
I do not know today where the pink face has gone
In the vernal breeze still smile pink peach blossoms full-blown
Happy Rain on a Spring Night(Excerpts)-by Du Fu(712-770)of the Tang Dynasty
Good rain knows its time right, it will fall when comes spring
With wind it steals in night, Mute, it moistens each thing
Dreaming of the Southern Shore-by Bai Juyi(772-846)of the Tang Dynasty
Fair Southern shore
With scenes I much adore
At sunrise riverside flowers redder than fire
In spring green waves grow as blue as sapphire
Which I can’t but admire
Love Seeds-by Wang Wei(701-761)of the Tang Dynasty
Red berries grow in the southern land
How many load in spring the trees
Gather them till full is your hand
They would revive fond memories

My name is Jack. When my family moved to America, we brought not only our luggage, but also our rules, customs and culture in China. One of the rules is that young people should always respect the elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment(尴尬) in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One day, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, she looked very unhappy. My manager gave me a long lecture about how Americans dislike the word “old”. I then walked back and apologized to the lady.
In my hometown in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, “old” means that a person is going to retire(退休). Here many people try to keep themselves from growing old by doing exercises. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.
4.Why did Jack serve the couple their food very fast
A. He wanted more pay. B. He respected the elderly.
C. He was asked to do so. D. He was a hard-working waiter.
5.What do we know about Jack’s hometown from the passage
A. People there are proud of being old.
B. People there dislike being called “old”.
C. No people there reach the age of seventy or eighty.
D. Young people there show little respect to the older.
6.What did Jack do after this experience
A. He made friends with the couple.
B. He lost his job in the restaurant.
C. He no longer respected the elderly.
D. He changed his way with older people.
7.We can know from the passage that _________.
A. the couple disliked fast service at all.
B. the manager apologized to the couple.
C. Jack wanted to show his feelings through words.
D. Jack knew more about American culture than before.
C
We know good manners are important. Today I am going to tell you something about manners in different countries. I think you already know that people in different countries usually have different ways of doing things. Something that is rude in one country may be quite polite in another. For example, in Britain you mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having liquid food. That is considered bad manners in Britain. But in Japan you needn’t worry about making a noise when you drink something. It shows that you are enjoying it. In Britain we try not to put our hands on the table at all during a meal. In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table throughout a meal. In Arabic countries we must be careful with our hands. You see, in Arabic countries you mustn’t eat with your left hand. This is considered to be very impolite. So, what should you do if you visit a foreign country Well, you needn’t worry. You can ask the native people there to help you and you can just watch carefully and try to do what they do.
8.In Arabic countries you must be careful with your _____.
A. mouth B. eyes C. food D. hands
9.In Britain we try not to put our hands during a meal _____.
A. in the bowl B. in your mouth C. beside the food D. on the table
10.Which of the following is true
A. In different countries, the manners are the same.
B. Different manners in different countries.
C. Good manners are not important.
D. In Arabic countries we mustn’t be careful with our hands.
11.The main idea of this passage is _____.
A. Manners B. Habits C. Traffic D. Lights
D
People in different places have very different ideas about what to eat. In our country, for example, people from the south like to eat rice while people in the north love dumplings or noodles. In Hunan or Sichuan, hot food is people’s favorite; however, people in Shanghai or Suzhou eat sweet dish almost every day.
But even if people live in the same part of the country, their tastes (口味) are not always the same. Old people and young ones have different tastes; men and women also have their different preferences (喜好). In a restaurant, some customs order thick and heavy soup, while others drink thin and clear one. A few people only eat vegetables. They do not eat fish or chicken at all!
So it is not easy for restaurants to meet the needs of all customers (顾客). To make more money, the restaurants in cities try their best to cook different kinds of foods.
12.What do people from the south like to eat
A. Noodles. B. Dumplings. C. Rice. D. Bread.
13.What kind of food do you think He Jiong in the TV program The Happy Camp perhaps likes to eat
A. Hot food. B. Sweet food. C. Salty food. D. Cold food.
14.Do people in the same part always have the same tastes
A. No, they don’t. B. Yes, they do.
C. Sorry, I don’t know. D. Yes, of course.
15.Why do restaurants try their best to cook different kinds of foods
A. To make more money. B. To meet more people.
C. To be good at cooking. D. To get enough customers.

One Sunday morning, George Thomas, a baker in a small New England town, was waking through the town when he saw a young boy coming toward him, swinging(挥动)a bird cage in the air. On the bottom of the cage, there were three little wild birds shaking with cold and fear. George Thomas stopped the boy and asked him what he got.
The boy was happy and told him that there were just some old birds in the cage. When the baker asked him what he would do to the old birds. The boy said casually(漫不经心地)that he wanted to take the birds home and play with them. He would pull out their feathers to make them fight. He would have a really good time because he would enjoy watching these.
George Thomas was shocked by what the boy said. How could a boy be so rude to wild animals So he continued to ask the boy what he would do to the birds when he got tired of them, because he was such a naughty and cruel boy that he was sure to be tired of them sooner or later. The boy laughed and said that he got a cat, which liked birds, so he would give the birds to his cat. The baker got more worried and decided to help set free the poor birds. So he asked, "How much do you want for these birds, son "
The boy looked at him in surprise, wondering if the baker really wanted to buy them. He laughed and reminded the man that they were just plain old field birds. They didn't sing and they were not even pretty. However, the baker insisted and continued to ask him how much money he wanted for the birds.
The boy stared at the baker as if he were crazy and said,"$10 ”
