Master Gardeners involve people in activities to improve their general well-being and overall enjoyment of life by helping them find sound management practices for home and urban natural resources, by creating pleasing environments through people-plant interactions and horticultural therapy (园艺疗法), and by contributing to a safe, abundant food supply through home fruit and vegetable production.

Besides, to become a Master Gardener volunteer, each applicant needs to complete an application, prepare background screening paperwork and schedule an interview with Extension staff.
What Does the Training Involve
Training sessions are offered one day a week over a three-month period and are led by expert educators in the region. Approximately 60 hours of classroom instruction and field study and 60 hours of volunteer internship (实习) work are required to complete the program and become certified. In order to remain a certified Master Gardener, 30 hours of volunteer work and 10 hours of continuing education or advanced training are required each year.

Diana Ross, American pop singer and actress, achieved international popularity, first as the leader singer of the Supremes and later as solo (独唱的) artist. Diana Ross was born on March 26, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. She was the second of six children of Fred and Ernestine Ross, who lived in one of Detroit’s poor districts. Because her family were closely connected with each other, Ross almost didn’t notice the difficult life as she grew up.
Ross’ professional career began in 1959, when she joined several neighborhood friends to form the Primettes. The group was renamed the Supremes after signing a recording contract (合同) with Motown late the following year. The group produced many number-one hit singles (热门单曲) on the US Billboard Hot 100, including Baby Love, Stop! In the Name of Love and Someday We’ll Be Together. In 1967, the group was renamed Diana Ross and the Supremes, foreshadowing (预示) Ross’ solo career, which she started in 1970.
Beginning with Ain’t No Mountain High Enough from her first solo album, Ross enjoyed more than ten years of great success with her hit singles. Ross also developed a film-acting career in the 1970s, beginning with a starring role as blues singer Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues and continuing with Mahogany, for which she also recorded the theme song Do You Know Where You’re Going To.
However, in the mid-1980s, Ross saw her career begin to wane. Most of her albums were re-recordings of earlier material. In 2006, she produced I Love You, a collection of love songs by many artists, and she started an energetic concert tour the following year to make the album publicly known. Although you can’t find her songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 now, Ross remains popular as one of the leading musical performers of all time.
4.What can we know about Ross’ childhood
A. She suffered from a serious disease. B. She lived with her family happily.
C. She had six brothers and sisters. D. She had no confidence in herself.
5.According to the passage, the Supremes ______.

Ranked as one of the poorest states in America, Louisiana is often struck by coastal storms and hurricanes. The sky-high poverty and crime rates are destructive for residents—especially for young people. Despite the unfavorable situation, there is a spirit of survival and hope for people living in Baton Rouge. "We choose to live by joy and community more than look at horrible issues and challenges that sometimes feel too big for us to take on," said Dustin La Font, whose nonprofit, Front Yard Bikes, supports hundreds of students in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, every year as they pedal towards a brighter future.
At Front Yard Bikes, students work to build their own bicycle, learning skills like mechanics, welding and cycling safety, while receiving mentoring, academic support, and job training opportunities.
"We had to put a ton of energy and love into it,'' La Font said. "Students learned to saw, drill, measure, cut. They learned to paint, design, and plan. And they built their own program from scratch. Our mission is to create safe spaces that empower our kids to learn about their intrinsic worth as they learn, grow, and build."
Many kids now gather after school in this safe place to ride, play, and help out in the garden. "Pretty much any kid can find a place here to belong," La Font said. "For the fact that they built their park, there's ownership over it. They take care of their park."
Front Yard Bikes serves nearly 400 young people a year. To date, 50 students have been certified in mechanics, and 2,000 kids have benefited from the program.
"People say to me, 'Thank you for keeping kids busy and out of the streets'," La Font said. "I don't like that because it says kids are the problems to be solved. But they are our greatest resource for our community challenges; they are problem solvers, not trouble makers. My constant fight is trying to get people to see who our kids really are ... and to see that they have something to offer right now."
8.How do people in Baton Rouge feel about their life
A. Desperate. B. Hopeful. C. Over-stressed. D. Satisfied.
9.What do we learn about Front Yard Bikes from paragraph 4
A. It is energy-consuming.

D. It frees kids from worries about school-life.
10.Why do kids find a sense of belonging in the garden
A. They created the garden themselves.
B. They are well protected in the garden.
C. They find the garden similar to their home.
D. They receive good education in the garden.
11.What role do kids play in the community according to La Font
A. They serve as part-time workers.
B. They bring about many problems.
C. They fall victim to violence and poverty.
D. They are helpful in the face of challenges.

Last Monday, I visited Jalan Besar to find a new fan blade (扇叶) for a standing fan that my daughters had broken.
I'd worked in the Jalan Besar area 30 years ago and remembered that there were lots of small hardware(五金制品) shops selling unusual things so I thought that I woud have no problem finding a fan blade. However, after walking around for almost an hour, I found out that these shops were no longer around.
When I was ready to give up and go home, I spotted an old-fashioned hardware store. After being greeted by a woman, I explained my predicament. She immediately asked me to show her the broken blade. Out of nowhere, a man who looked to be in his 60s came out.
He asked to see the blade and then disappeared into the shop. He came back with a blade but it did not look the same as what I had in my hand. We compared the two blades and he said that it might work.
I asked him how much it was.
He told me that he had taken the blade off an old fan that someone had brought in for repair.
He said: "It didn't cost me anything, so why should I charge you for it "
That really touched me. I took the blade home and it work perfectly! My daughters got a "new" fan for nothing.
When I told them this story, they were shocked as they are used to patronizing (经常光顾) big modern shops where everything is transactional (交易型的) and the employees go strictly by the book. Not so much my wife. She is almost in her 60s, and said this reminded her of the kind aunties and uncles who used to run small shops and were always ready to help others when she was growing up.
12.Why did the author go to Jalan Besar
A. To visit some old friends. B. To buy a new standing fan.
C. To apply for a highly - paid job. D. To find a way to fix the broken fan.
13.What does the underlined word "predicament" in paragraph 3 mean
A. Potential risk. B. Basic principle.
C. Contact information. D. Difficult situation.
14.Which of the following can best describe the old man
A. Kind and brave. B. Honest and helpful.
C. Hard - working and curious. D. Easy - going and humorous.
15.How did the author's wife react to his experience
A. She thought little of it.
B. She was greatly surprised.
C. She remembered the good old days.
D. She thought it was too good to be true.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I remember being happy for my friend Avery when she won the karate(空手道) championship we'd both competed in. But I'm embarrassed to admit I was also pretty envious! But when she and I tried out for Alice in Wonderland, though, things went the opposite way.
"I really hope I get picked to be Alice," said Avery.
"You'd make a great Alice!" I said. "I don't care what part I get as long as I'm in it." "So you'd be happy to have a small part like the Dormouse " she asked.
"Exactly!" I said.
A few days later, Avery and I raced over to the theater office, where the director had posted the cast list.
"Wow!" said Avery. "You got the part of Alice and I got the part of the Dormouse."
"That can't be right," I said. "There must be some mistake!"
But I really and truly was given the part of Alice. I'm pretty sure the reason I'd done well is that I hadn't been nervous at all during the audition(试镜). And the reason I hadn't been nervous is that it hadn't even occurred to me that I could get the major role.
"Do you want to come over after school and we can practice our lines " I asked.
"You mean practice your lines " Avery said, not even looking at me. "No, thanks. I'm pretty busy this week."
"OK," I said. "How about some day next week "
"Sorry," she mumbled. "I'm pretty sure I'm busy forever."
That night at dinner, after my parents congratulated me for getting the lead role, they asked how I felt about it.
"Well, I'm confused," I said. "Avery was so upset that I was picked to be Alice, she pretty much threw away our friendship."
"Hmm," said my mum. "Arizona, don't you think this might be an opportunity for you to be an extra-good friend " "Sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious and don't know how to act. Try giving her a little time and understanding. I bet she'll come around before too long."
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Over the following rehearsals(排练), Avery kept ignoring me on purpose.

答案:Over the following rehearsals(排练), Avery kept ignoring me on purpose. Mum's words echoing in my mind, I supposed maybe we both needed some space. Then at rehearsal one day, I approached her and smiled, "You're such a talented actor, and the way you say your lines is awesome." "Thanks," said Avery, "I figured out all the ways to perform it well." A wave of pride flashed across her face. "Well," I said, "I'm still struggling with a few things about my character. I'd love your help if you have any free time this week."
She smiled. "I think I might be free on Thursday." On hearing her words, I felt more than happy and smiled back. Avery came to practise with me as she promised. As expected, our play turned out marvellous, and the audience burst into cheers, pride filling in all of us. Although the friendship path between Avery and me was once a little rough, we eventually enjoyed the sweetness from each other. Mum was right, "Give your teammate a little time and understanding, and he or she just might come around before too long."
