In the late summer of 2004, days before I was to move to a city in China, to teach English for a year, I spoke to an acquaintance who had spent a few years in the country.

When Thanksgiving came around, I decided it’d be easiest if I just ignored it. In China, this isn’t difficult; unlike Christmas, which many Chinese people cerebrate with decorations, music, and festivities, Thanksgiving slips past unnoticed — it’s just another Thursday.
And so it was. As I sat on my sofa, however, watching another film from the James Bond box set I bought for $12 at a local shop, I felt a sense of shame. What was I doing It was Thanksgiving, damn it. I needed to have a proper Thanksgiving dinner.
There was only one problem. As in most small Chinese cities, there’s no turkey, or cranberry sauce, or stuffing, yams, pumpkin pie, or anything else. In fact, in the entire city of 700,000 people, there was exactly one restaurant whose food even resembled, at a distance, Thanksgiving fare.

Drunken driving — sometimes called America’s socially accepted form of murder — has become a national epidemic (流行病). Every hour of every day about three Americans on average are killed by drunken drivers, adding up to an incredible 250,000 over the past ten years.
A drunken driver is usually referred to as one with 0.10-blood alcohol content or roughly three beer glasses of wine or shots of whisky drunk within two hours. Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the American manly image and judges were lenient in most courts, but the drunken killing has recently caused so many well-publicized tragedies, especially concerning young children, that public opinion is no longer so tolerant.
Twenty states have raised the legal drinking age to 21, reversing a trend (逆转潮流) in the 1960s to reduce it to 18. After New Jersey lowered it to 18, the number of people killed by 18-20-year-old drivers more than doubled, so the state recently upped it back to 21. Reformers, however, fear raising the drinking age will have little effect unless accompanied by educational programs to help young people to develop “responsible attitudes” about drinking and teach them to resist peer pressure to drink.
Though new laws have led to increased arrests and tests in many areas already, to a marked drop in accidents, some states are also punishing bars for serving customers too many drinks. A bar in Massachusetts was fined for serving six or more double brandies to a customer who was “obviously drunk” and later drove off the road, killing a nine-year-old boy.
As the accidents continue to occur daily in every state, some Americans are even beginning to speak well of the 13 years national ban of alcohol that began in 1919, which President Hoover called the “noble experiment”. California has a new program called the Digital Textbook Initiative. “Starting this fall with high school math and science, we will be the first state in the nation to provide schools with a state-approved list of digital textbooks.” That was Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in June, talking about his effort to get schools to use materials available free online. He listed reasons why he thinks digital textbooks make sense.
California approves traditional textbooks in six-year cycles. Digital ones can offer the latest information. They lighten the load of school bags. They save paper and trees, and make learning more fun and interactive. And above all, he said, they help schools with their finances.

Earlier this year, California invited content developers to offer digital math and science materials for high schools. These had to meet at least 90% of the state’s learning requirements. Specially trained teachers examined 16 textbooks and approved ten of them. Six of the ten were published by the CK 12 Foundation, a nonprofit group that had been developing digital science and math books for about two years. The foundation paid teachers and other education professionals to write and edit them. The money came from a group financed by the Khosla Family.
California cannot require schools to use the digital textbooks. Individual school districts will have to decide for themselves. Susan Martimo, a California Department of Education official, says she does not expect widespread use right away. Her best guess is that some schools with a lot of technology will be the first to use them, but only in addition to their traditional books.
School administrators point out that the texts may be free online, but students need a way to access them. Not everyone has a computer or electronic reader. Schools could print out copies, but that would not help the environment. Also, there is the cost to train teachers to use digital textbooks effectively.

The more women and minorities make their way into the ranks of management, the more they seem to want to talk about things formerly judged to be best left unsaid. The newcomers also tend to see office matters with a fresh eye, in the process sometimes forming critical analyses of the factors that influence everyone’s experience in the organization.
Consider the new views of Harvey Coleman of Atlanta on the subject of how people get promoted. Coleman is black. He spent 11 years with IBM, half of them working in management development, and now serves as a consultant in some big companies like AT&T and Coca-Cola. Coleman says that based on what he’s seen at big companies, he considers the different roles of the following elements in the long-term success: performance counts a mere 10%, image, 30%; and exposure, a full 60%. Coleman concludes that excellent job performance is so common these days that while doing your work well may increase your pay, it won’t ensure you the big promotion. He finds that advancement more often depends on how many people know you and your work, and what a high position these people hold.
Ridiculous beliefs But they are not ridiculous to many people, especially many women and members of minority races who, like Coleman, feel that they have a better picture of the reality. “Women and blacks in organizations work under false beliefs,” says Kaleel Jamison, a New York-based management consultant who helps corporations deal with these issues. “They think that if you work hard, you’ll get ahead — that someone in authority will reach down and give you a promotion.” She adds, “Most women and blacks are so frightened that people will think they’ve got ahead because of their sex or color that they try to make themselves less visible.” Her advice to those folks: learn the ways that white males have traditionally used to find their way to stand out among the people.

In the late summer of 2004, days before I was to move to a city in China, to teach English for a year, I spoke to an acquaintance who had spent a few years in the country.

And so it was. As I sat on my sofa, however, watching another film from the James Bond box set I bought for $12 at a local shop, I felt a sense of shame. What was I doing It was Thanksgiving, damn it. I needed to have a proper Thanksgiving dinner.

Drunken driving — sometimes called America’s socially accepted form of murder — has become a national epidemic (流行病). Every hour of every day about three Americans on average are killed by drunken drivers, adding up to an incredible 250,000 over the past ten years.
A drunken driver is usually referred to as one with 0.10-blood alcohol content or roughly three beer glasses of wine or shots of whisky drunk within two hours. Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the American manly image and judges were lenient in most courts, but the drunken killing has recently caused so many well-publicized tragedies, especially concerning young children, that public opinion is no longer so tolerant.
Twenty states have raised the legal drinking age to 21, reversing a trend (逆转潮流) in the 1960s to reduce it to 18. After New Jersey lowered it to 18, the number of people killed by 18-20-year-old drivers more than doubled, so the state recently upped it back to 21. Reformers, however, fear raising the drinking age will have little effect unless accompanied by educational programs to help young people to develop “responsible attitudes” about drinking and teach them to resist peer pressure to drink.
Though new laws have led to increased arrests and tests in many areas already, to a marked drop in accidents, some states are also punishing bars for serving customers too many drinks. A bar in Massachusetts was fined for serving six or more double brandies to a customer who was “obviously drunk” and later drove off the road, killing a nine-year-old boy.

California has a new program called the Digital Textbook Initiative. “Starting this fall with high school math and science, we will be the first state in the nation to provide schools with a state-approved list of digital textbooks.” That was Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in June, talking about his effort to get schools to use materials available free online. He listed reasons why he thinks digital textbooks make sense.
California approves traditional textbooks in six-year cycles. Digital ones can offer the latest information. They lighten the load of school bags. They save paper and trees, and make learning more fun and interactive. And above all, he said, they help schools with their finances.

The more women and minorities make their way into the ranks of management, the more they seem to want to talk about things formerly judged to be best left unsaid. The newcomers also tend to see office matters with a fresh eye, in the process sometimes forming critical analyses of the factors that influence everyone’s experience in the organization.
Consider the new views of Harvey Coleman of Atlanta on the subject of how people get promoted. Coleman is black. He spent 11 years with IBM, half of them working in management development, and now serves as a consultant in some big companies like AT&T and Coca-Cola. Coleman says that based on what he’s seen at big companies, he considers the different roles of the following elements in the long-term success: performance counts a mere 10%, image, 30%; and exposure, a full 60%. Coleman concludes that excellent job performance is so common these days that while doing your work well may increase your pay, it won’t ensure you the big promotion.
