1. It refers to the Amazon rainforest. The sentence uses metaphor, which compares the Amazon rainforest to the lungs of the Earth. As is known to all, human beings can’t survive without the organ of lung; in the same way, our earth can’t give birth to life without the Amazon rainforest because it produces over 20% of all the Earth’s oxygen. The sentence emphasizes the Amazon rainforest’s irraplaceable role in our planet.
2. No. The Amazon rainforest is far too important for us to allow it to be destroyed. It helps maintain the balance of the ecosystem and provides our society with food and medicine. To protect the rainforest is to protect ourselves.
