II阅读
(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
A
In spring, you may have seen white foam (泡沫) on a green tree or other plants. As a matter of fact, the foam is where young spittlebugs (吹沫虫) live. These insects are protected by the foam, and they usually don't do much harm to the plants.
As we all know, in late summer, a mother spittlebug will lay her eggs on the plant. And in spring the babies will hatch (孵化). After they come to the new world, they begin to eat juice from the plant. The babies eat more juice than their bodies need for food. The extra juice mixes with some special waste that the spittlebugs produce. When this fluid (液体) is released, it mixes with the air, forming bubbly foam.
What is so great about having a foam home The space inside is so wet that it can keep the bugs' soft bodies from drying out. And the foam tastes bad, so it keeps away most animals that would eat the bugs. Some birds will reach their heads through the foam to find the bugs. Wasps and ants might eat them as well. But most of the bugs stay safe inside the foam.
Once the bugs have grown into adults, they stop making foam. They leave their homes and jump from one plant to another in search of food. The adults look a little like tiny frogs. For this reason, they are also called froghoppers.
If you see some foam on a plant, you might want to take a careful look inside. Gently push some of the foam aside with a small stick. Deep inside you may see a few insects eating plant juice. They might also be making more foam. Be sure to push the foam back after a moment to cover the insects and keep them safe. Soon the spittlebugs will grow up and leave their foam home. They will join the other insects in the grassland.

A study by Oxford University Press (OUP) into British children's writing shows that the future of written English will owe more to Hollywood films than Dickens or Shakespeare.
Researchers who looked at the analysis of 74,000 short stories in a national competition found the children were increasingly using American words such as garbage, trash can, sidewalk, candy, and flashlight. The stories, written by pupils aged 7 to 13, show how fairy cakes are referred to as cupcakes and a dinner jacket has become a tuxedo (晚礼服). "Smart" is now often used as "clever".
Chris Evans, whose radio show runs the competition, sail the results were "interesting", adding, "Who'd have thought that the popular American musician Simon Cowell and Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi would be among the famous names that come up in children's work repeatedly "
But according to the study, pupils are let down by some basic knowledge of English. Children are not familiar with simple spellings such as "does" and "clothes" and struggle to use the past tense correctly.
Researchers also found that punctuation (标点) was underused, especially semi-colons and speech marks. Some did not know how to use capital letters. However, exclamation (感叹) marks were overused. Researchers found 35,171 examples in total, with some young writers using five at a time.
Popular US fiction (小说) such as the Twilight vampire novels and films is thought to be fuelling the increasing use of American vocabulary and spelling. Modern technology is also influential. Out of almost 300 references to "blackberry", nearly half refer to mobile phones. Characters frequently "google" for information or use "apps". But the researchers found a wealth of imaginative and inventive ideas.
Fears that texting was corrupting children's written work were unfounded, they said, with youngsters only using text-expressions when they were referring to a text message.
Samantha Armstrong, of the OUP children's dictionaries division, said, "We should accept the facts calmly. Perhaps we are catching a glimpse (一瞥) of the language of the future."

We've known for decades (十年) about "IQ", the intelligence quotient, then "EQ", the emotional quotient, and how a child's EQ may be an even better indicator of future success than IQ. With all of us being more globally connected than ever before, CQ or the cultural quotient is also important.
CQ is about how well an individual can understand and connect with those different from themselves. We now deal with people of different cultures, religions, and abilities. Our ability to value, but not tolerate (忍受), the customs, beliefs, and practices of those who are different from us is important in modern society. Unlike IQ which is not a skill, we can help our children develop CQ by having conversations when they are young.
Some families are more comfortable talking about difference than others. In the USA, 75% of white parents never or almost never talk about races. For families that are part of a minority, these conversations may come up regularly as family members experience oppression (压迫) because of their race or culture. Many white parents today agree with what authors Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman call Diverse Environment Theory: The belief that regularly exposing (暴露) our children to different races and cultures is better than talking about races. According to the theory, we should not draw attention to races so that our kids grow up viewing everyone as the same.
One of the earliest ways babies and young children make sense of the colorful world is by sorting. Babies can find difference in skin color and gender when they are six months old. The idea of not talking about races does not produce children who do not notice difference as parents have expected. It just signals that this is something we are not to talk about. Conversations about diversity and difference can be hard. However, if we want our children to continue making the world a better place, we need to help them get the language and understand they need to do so.
36. From the passage, we can learn that CQ ____________.
A. has been known for decades
B. best predicts one's future success
C. measures people's ability to tell difference
D. can be developed when people are young
37. What can we learn about American families' attitude towards talking about culture difference
A. 75% of families talk about this topic with their children.
B. White families are more open to this topic.
C. Non-white parents are more likely to talk about this topic.
D. They think it meaningless to talk about this topic.
38. Which of the following statements might be supported by Diverse Environment Theory
A. People should stick to their own culture.
B. People should avoid exposing children to culture difference.
C. Talking about races is not the best way to raise children's CQ.
D. Children are not so sensitive to culture difference as we thought.
39. What can we know about children whose parents avoid talking about culture difference
A. They would respect culture difference.
B. They would be more eager to talk about that.
C. They would have a higher CQ than other children.
D. They would not think it is right to mention it.
40. What is the best title for the passage
A. Make the world a better place for our children.
B. Develop children's CQ by talking with them.
C. CQ plays an important role in children's success.
D. Teach children to make sense of the colorful world.
D
New prediction (预测) software should reduce not only the murder (谋杀) rate, but the rate of other crimes (犯罪) Developed by Richard Berk, the software is already used in Baltimore and Philadelphia to predict which individuals on probation (缓刑) or parole are most likely to murder and to be murdered.
"When a person goes on probation or parole they are observed by an officer. The question is what level of observation is appropriate," said, Berk. It used to be that officers used the person's criminal record and their judgment to make a decision.
"This research replaces those seat-of-the-pants conclusions," he said.
Technology helps determine the level of observation. On average there is one murder out of every 100,000 people. Even among high-risk groups the murder rate is one in 100. To predict such a rare event is very difficult, but advances in computer technology can make it.
The researchers made a dataset of more than 60,000 various crimes. Using the software they developed, they found some much more likely to commit murder when paroled or probated. They could identify eight future murderers out of 100.
Berk's software examines roughly two dozen factors, from criminal record to geographic location. The type of crime, and more importantly, the age at which that crime was committed, were two of the most predictive factors.
"People assume that if someone murdered then they will murder in the future," said Berk. "What really matters is what that person did as a young individual," Berk said.
"Berk's scientific answer leaves policymakers with difficult questions. By labeling one group of people as high risk, and observing them closely, there should be fewer murders. But it also means that the life of those high-risk individuals will be affected greatly. For human rights supporters, that means punishing people who, most likely, will not commit a crime in the future," said Bushway, an expert on psychology. "It comes down to a question of whether you would rather make these mistakes or those mistakes."
41. The underlined words in Paragraph 3 probably mean ______________.
A. conclusions based on experience or guesswork
B. conclusions based on widespread information
C. conclusions made by advanced technology
D. conclusions based on serious consideration
42. For 650 people on probation or parole, how many future murderers would the software point out
A.8 B.13
C. 52. D. 65.
43. From the passage we can infer that______________.
A. the technology developed by Richard Berk will soon be widely used in the US
B. the new software works mainly by studying crime data that has been collected
C. whether a person murders or not is largely decided by their youth-time education
D. if a person murdered when he was fifty, he is likely to murder again on probation
44. Bushway's attitude to the technology put forward by Richard Berk is ______________.
A. positive B. negative
C. objective D. indifferent
45. What would be the best title for the passage
A. Closer observation for potential murders.
B. Features taken to predict criminal behavior.
C. Technology changes judges' way of working.

46. My mother bought this book for me as a present for my 11th birthday. This book is exciting from the start to the end with an interesting plot (情节). It tells the story of Luca Vero, a detective in a nunnery, where he meets a beautiful girl who is trapped there against her will. This book seems to have taken me back to 1453. I finished reading this book in two days.
47. I bought this book for my 6-year-old son. It is full of funny facts for both adults and children, which will engage children of all ages. Some sections are better for older children but my son learned a lot from it and he got his teacher's praise with his knowledge about the Olympics. He becomes more excited about Rio 2016 Olympics.
48. This is a wonderful heartwarming story of love, devotion and total belief in the ones you love. This book made me smile, laugh, cry and feel like shouting with joy. The story is told through the eyes of a horse and the journey he takes through his life as a farm horse. My sons have read it too and although none of us are particularly fond of horses, that made no difference. It is a must-read for anyone over the age of 9.
49. We bought this set of books. Although it is said that the stickers can be used again and again if we are careful, we didn't find that to be true. However, my kids love this product because the stickers are lovely, showing the images of their much-loved Spider-man and his friends. Our kids put these stickers on some of their toy boxes to make them more beautiful.
50. I bought this book for my 9-year-oId daughter. Her reading level is well above kids of her age, so choosing books with suitable content can be difficult. I thought this was worth a try for the cheap price! It is an interesting book and it makes me know the true feeling of kids being bullied. It tells kids not to treat others badly just because they look different when actually they are just like you! The novel is so good that I want to read it again!

Sixteen-year-old Tessa Youngner sees walking to school as a chance to do what she likes best: listen to music. "There is a lot of work to be done, especially in high school, so there's not always a lot of free time to listen to music or watch TV." Two other teenagers, Andrew Summers and Nailah Philips, also admit to using wireless devices a lot while on the go.
These Virginia students attended a class about the risks of distracted (注意力不集中的) walking. A group called Safe Kids Worldwide organized the event.
Linda Watkins, Injury Prevention Coordinator for Safe Kids Worldwide, says, "Kids these days think that they can really multi-task, but often teenagers do not realize how dangerous crossing the street has become. ''
She added, "There is the problem with the distracted drivers, too. But the pedestrians also have to accept some responsibility when it comes to being safe."
She says her group is suggesting a number of measures to lessen the risks. "We're trying to educate kids, drivers and families that they need to put away their distracting technologies when they cross the street. We're also working very hard to create better infrastructure. We're building roads, putting in signage, and putting in crosswalks all around the country and in other nine countries throughout the world."

基础写作 (One possible version)
This Tuesday our English teacher Mrs Wang gave us a lecture on differences between British English and American English. According to her, the differences mainly lie in spellings, pronunciations, grammar, etc and also different words are applied to express the same meaning. One of the reasons leading to the differences is that some American dictionary makers change the spellings of some words to seek characteristics for their own language. In addition, the differences have occurred naturally as time goes on. She also pointed out that there are many different kinds of English in the world and the pronunciations and grammar might be different from place to place even in different regions of one country.
读写任务(One possible version)
Many teenagers would text or listen to music while walking. Safe Kids Worldwide is trying to raise teenagers’ awareness of the dangers caused by distracted walking and suggesting ways to decrease the risks.
As far as I’m concerned, distracted walking is very dangerous because it will make you unable to notice the dangers nearby and thus accidents will occur. For example, one of my classmates has a habit of playing online games on his mobile phone when walking in the street. One day he was so absorbed in the game that he didn’t notice he was walking across the street. As a result, he was knocked down by a truck. What he had to do was to stay in hospital for two weeks.
As for me, I will increase the awareness of walking safety from now on. I won’t text, listen to music or play games while walking. I’ll obey traffic regulations at any time. I think only in this way can we ensure our safety.

43. B。推理判断题。根据第五段The researchers made a dataset of more than 60,000 various crimes及第六段Berk’s software examines roughly two dozen factors, from criminal record to geographic location可知,B为正确选项。
44. C。推理判断题。从文章结尾正反双方面的评价可以看出Bushway的观点比较客观。
45. D。主旨大意题。本文主要讲了研究人员研究出来用于预测那些假释或缓刑的人是否可能会再次犯谋杀罪的软件。
