She may have lacked a home, but now this teen has top honors.
A 17-year-old student who spent much of high school living around homeless shelters – and sometimes sleeping in her car - today graduated as valedictorian(致告别辞的毕业生代表)of her class at Charles Drew High School in Clayton County, Ga., just outside of Atlanta.
Chelsea Fearce held a 4.466 GPA and scored 1900 on her SATs despite having to use her cellphone to study after the shelter lights were turned off at night. "I know I have been made stronger. I was homeless. My family slept on mats(地席) on the floor and we were lucky if we got more than one full meal a day. Getting a shower, food and clean clothes was an everyday struggle," Fearce said in the speech she gave at her graduation ceremony.
Fearce overcame her day-to-day struggles by focusing on a better day. "I just told myself to keep working, because the future will not be like this any more," she told WSBTV.
One of five children, Fearce's family sometimes had an apartment to live in, but at other times had to live in homeless shelters or even in their car, if they had one.
"You're worried about your home life and then worried at school. Worry about being a little hungry sometimes, go hungry sometimes. You just have to deal with it. You eat what you can, when you can. "
Fearce won the opportunity and even tested high enough to enroll (招收) in college classes halfway through her high school career. She starts college next year at Spelman College as a junior where she is planning to study biology.

Sometimes the only thing that determines whether or not you make the sale is how well you communicate with your customers. Communication really is an art that needs to be practiced. You may think you know exactly what to say, but it would be helpful if you practiced small talk to break the ice when talking to new people. But listening and small talk are not the only things. You need to make them trust you and what you have to offer.
One way that you can make others trust you is to find something you have in common. When you talk about something you have in common, such as common goals, dreams, personality characteristics or experiences, people will connect more with you. When there is a connection, people will come to trust the person they like.
Another way to communicate effectively is to show care, concern, and compassion (同情 )for the people you deal with. When your customers can see that you feel their pain and that you care enough to help them, they will know your products and services are not just being pushed on them for your own benefit. This means listening carefully to what they want, and what their concerns are. If you do this genuinely and sincerely, you will earn your prospective customers' trust.
Persuading your customers to buy something from you is a part of communication that is obviously a little difficult. When you are trying to persuade someone, you should be clear about human emotions and know what drives people to buy. Find out what emotions you can tap, and then discuss the incentives(动机) and rewards for joining you. You can also talk about the facts, statistics or explain who else has jumped in. Use positive words, positive actions and have a sense of humor.
If you practice these things, you will become an effective and confident communicator in no time and will start to see the business rolling in!
31. According to the author, communication skills______.
A. are familiar to everybody
B. need to be practiced
C. mean listening and chatting
D. can be gained from books
32. When you talk about something you have in common, people may trust you because ______ .
A. they connect more with you
B. they have so much in common
C. they begin to like you
D. they have the same goal

A. possible customers
B. people who need help
C. the products to be sold
D. people talking to you
34. We may learn from the text that an effective way to persuade your customers is to______.
A. give them a discount
B. try to consider their feelings
C. show them you are a good speaker
D. beg them to help you
35. The passage mainly tells us______.

Popocatepetl is an active volcano located in the states of Puebla, State of Mexico and Morelos in
Central Mexico, and lies in the eastern half of the Trans-Mexican volcanic belt. It is the second highest peak in Mexico, after the Pico de Orizaba at 5,636 m.
Popocatepetl is 70 km southeast from Mexico City, from where it can be seen regularly, depending on atmospheric conditions. Until recently, the volcano was one of three tall peaks in Mexico to contain glaciers, the others being Iztaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba. In the 1990s, the glaciers greatly decreased in size, partly due to warmer temperatures but largely due to increased volcanic activity. By early 2001, Popocatepetl's glaciers had become extinct; ice remained on the volcano, but no longer displayed the characteristic features of glaciers.
Popocatepetl is one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico, having had more than 15 major eruptions since the arrival of the Spanish in 1519.
In December 2000, tens of thousands of people were evacuated by the government based on the warnings of scientists. The volcano then made its largest display in l,200 years.
In January and February 2012, scientists noticed Popocatepetl's activity increasing. On January 25, 2012, an ash explosion occurred on the mountain, causing much dust and ash to contaminate the atmosphere around it.
On Wednesday May 8th, 2013 at 7:28 p.m. local time, Popocatepetl erupted again with a high amplitude(振幅) that lasted for 3.5 hours. It began with plumes (羽状物)of ash that rose 3 km into the air and began drifting west at first, but later began to drift east covering areas of the villages of San Juan Tianguismanalco, San Pedro Benito Juárez and the City of Puebla in smoke and ash. Explosions from the volcano itself subsequently sent volcanic rock as far as 700 m from the crater.
On July 4, 2013, due to several eruptions of steam and ash lasting for at least 24 hours, at least six U.S. airlines canceled more than 40 flights into and out of Mexico City and Toluca airports that day.
36. The extinction of the glaciers on Popocatepetl was mainly caused by ______.
A. warmer temperatures
B. atmospheric conditions
C. increased volcanic activity
D. environmental pollution
37. The most violent eruption of Popocatepetl in history Popocatepetl in the year______.
A. 1519 B. 2000 C. 2012 D. 2013

A. It was reported to have lasted for 3.5 hours.
B. Volcanic rock rose high into the air.
C. The volcanic ash buried three villages.
D. It caused many flights to be canceled.
39. The underlined word in Paragraph 5 probably means “_______”.

The iPod can be used by students to access a variety of educational applications (应用程序). Such applications can help students make progress in their studies if students make proper use of an iPod.
Students can benefit from the use of an iPod when they are studying. By listening to an iPod they can cut out noise and focus on their work properly. If they can do their homework when listening to music on an iPod, they are more likely to focus their attention on their studies in a noisy environment.
An iPod is also used for fun and recreation (娱乐). Music can put the mind at ease and make it work faster. The waiting period between classes and lunch time can be made enjoyable if you have your iPod to listen to. It also can help students relax before the start of a class.
Some schools in the United States have supported the idea of using iPods at school, especially for students with limited English ability. These students can improve grammar skills and increase their vocabulary by listening to English songs on their iPods.

基础写作 (One possible version)
Knowing how to make small talk is important in our everyday life, so you need to learn some basic rules. Choose something interesting that happens around you instead of choosing serious topics such as religion or politics. Make sure to avoid any privacy issue in your small talk. Try to make others believe that you’re interested in what they are saying and make good eye contact. Don’t break in while others are talking and never change the topic in the process of making small talk.
读写任务 (One possible version)
Students benefit from using iPods not only when they are studying but also when they are relaxing. As a result, students are allowed to use iPods in some American schools.
As we all know, iPods are such advanced modern electronic products that we can use them to surf the Internet, to enjoy music, to take photos, to play various games and so on. As a result it is rather popular with school students.
iPods can be beneficial to students. They can help students take notes in class so that students won’t miss any important information. Besides, students can relax and refresh themselves by listening to music on their iPods in their spare time. However, if not controlled properly, iPods may also bring much harm to students. For example, students may get distracted in class when they are listening to music or playing games on the iPods.
Therefore, I don’t think it is a good idea to allow students to use iPods at school. They may do more harm than good to the students.
