The young man demanded Diaz's wallet, and Diaz passed it over without objection(异议). But just as he turned to walk away, Diaz called, "Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something."

The teenager looked at Diaz in disbelief, and asked why he would do such a thing. Diaz replied, "If you're willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, I guess you must really need the money." He said he was heading out for dinner, and that he would be happy to take someone with him.

J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings, devoted his life to knowledge, especially the study of language. He was an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon for much of his professional life.
Tolkien's ability with languages inspired his studies of philology, the branch of linguistics (语言学). Tolkien worked as a philologist throughout his life, publishing articles on Anglo-Saxon texts, such as Beowulf, and co-editing an edition of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Recent opinion polls have ranked The Lord of the Rings as one of the most popular literary works of this century. However, Tolkien's publisher at first thought this "work of genius" would lose money. And when Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings first appeared in 1954-55,it received a mixed critical response(批判的回应).
Some commentators, such as C.S. Lewis and W.H. Auden, said that The Lord of the Rings was a masterpiece. Others, such as Mark Roberts and Edmund Wilson, thought it was childish rubbish. Auden commented that people seemed to either love Tolkien's work or hate it. Although some people didn't like it, the book sold fairly well and went above the publisher ' s expectations.
In the 1960s. the popularity of The Lord of the Rings exploded when a pirated version became available in America. It came out with the themes of fighting against political corruption and preserving the natural environment, filled with challenges readers faced in their lives. Moreover, a lot of people became crazy about it. They wore buttons labeled FRODO LIVES or GANDALF FOR PRESIDENT. Many clubs, journals and other fantasy books appeared.

Alicia O'Brien is 14 years old and lives in New Lenox, Illinois. I first met her three years ago when she sent me a fan letter for one of my books. The letter was typed. Even then, Alicia was being treated for brain cancer. But that letter was smart and bursting with life. It was also funny.
We were pen pals and phone pals for a while, and then finally met in person when I spent some time last year with her and her family in Milwaukee. We took her to see Tom Sawyer at First Stage in Milwaukee. She loved it. When we took her backstage to meet the actors and actresses, she led the way. By this time, her tumor (肿瘤)was giving her double vision and shaky balance. But she managed to march into the dressing room on her own.
For a while, Alicia's tumor actually stopped growing. Recently, it began growing again. It's slowly robbing her of her ability to do so many things. She now uses a wheelchair. Tonight on the phone she told us her nurse had taken her bowling. Throwing the bowling ball, Alicia fell out of the wheelchair on her butt (屁股). She found it hilarious. She said over the phone to me. "Cherie. life is too short not to laugh at all the stuff that happens."
I find it terribly, terribly hard to understand how a terrific girl like her could have to fight something as awful as a spreading brain tumor. But watching her fight, and learning from how she does it, have made me a better person. I believe these have made everyone around her better people. And I consider her as my hero.
How does my hero deal with what has happened to her? She tries to give it the most meaning that she can do, for herself and for others. She writes poetry -lots of poetry. She has touched and continues to touch so many people.

38. What does the underlined word "hilarious" in Paragraph 3 mean?

Henrik Ibsen, born on March 20th, 1828 in Norway, is considered as the founder of the modern realistic drama. He began to write poems at the age of 16 but failed in the entrance exam of the Medical University in 1850. He started his formal writings in 1852, of which the most famous work is A Doll’s House. Though he was on the list of nominees for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times, he never won it, which was his greatest regret. His dramas still have deep practical significance today and many continue to be shown all over the world.
(One possible version)
As a boy, the author’s grandparents always managed to give him sweets and other gifts on Christmas. Though he is old now, he still remembers their gifts and love.
This text also reminds me of my pleasant memories when I was still a boy. Many years ago, both my grandmother and grandfather were still alive. I remember that one day before the Spring Festival, as soon as my grandfather entered the house, he took out a pair of stockings and a new coat, and helped me put them on. Looking at myself in the mirror, I felt so happy. Soon it was time for dinner. Everyone in our family talked and laughed at the dinner table. We felt rather warm and comfortable inside the house even if it was very cold outside.
Now many years have passed by and I can still remember those happy moments and their gifts. I will cherish these moments and gifts and pass them on.

A
根据第一段第一句话...he was simply planning to go to his favorite local diner for a meal.
Diaz called, “Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something.” The young man turned around, surprised.
As they were sitting at the table...
根据倒数第三段... he was beginning to see that kindness wasn’t so strange, after all.

And when Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings first appeared in 1954-55, it received a mixed critical response.
Lewis 和W.H.
根据第五段的内容,B项和D项的说法不正确,A项的表达前后逻辑颠倒,根据“the popularity of The Lord of the Rings exploded when a pirated version became available in America”一句,可知,在美国出现盗版后,这本书才逐渐地流行起来。
