II 阅读
(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Among the obvious consequences of deforestation, there is a severe loss of living space. Seventy percent of the earth's land animals and plants live in forests, so destroying them would make those creatures homeless. For centuries people have hunted animals for food and pleasure. The invention of guns makes it easier for humans to hunt than before. Some animals are killed by people and some even become extinct, which have led to some serious issues because the destruction of the food chain has upset the balance of the nature.
In Australia in the 1950s, the rabbit population was so large that they ate the land bare. The government attempted to reduce the rabbit population by introducing foxes, building wire fences and using poisons, but nothing worked. Finally, they intentionally infected rabbits in the most populated areas. The virus was transmitted from rabbit to rabbit by insects. Over the next three years, millions of rabbits died, agriculture regained and everybody was happy.
However, unfortunately, there was a sudden upset in the balance of nature. For lack of rabbits, foxes began eating poultry, rats and mice. A reduction in the number of mice caused a decline in the number of owls whose normal diet (mice) became less abundant. This phenomenon influenced the food chain.
There are many cases like this. If we continue to "repair" the Nature, we would be in serious trouble. Majestic animals like tigers are killed every year in India. The Royal Bengal tiger is the only type that exists in India and the number is dramatically reduced every year because of illegal hunting. The current number is approximately 2,000 while two hundred years ago the population was 23,000(or more).
Those who sell and buy animal products like ivory, skins, and tiger bones for medicine, leather bags and furs should be punished. They must stop this kind of trade. The earth is home to everyone on it.

D. The number of rabbits was successfully controlled by infecting them with viruses.
28. Why does the number of Royal Bengal tiger drop each year?
A. Because the forests are destroyed.
B. Because they are hunted illegally.
C. Because they are lacking in food.
D. Because they are infected by viruses.
29. According to the author, how can we end the trade in animal products?
A. By blaming those who sell animal products.
B. By destroying those animal products.
C. By punishing people involved according to law.
D. By fining those who sell animal products only.
30. How does the writer express his opinion in the passage?

Psychiatric(精神病的) patients who took part in a quit-smoking program while they were in the hospital for treatment of mental illness were more likely to quit smoking and less likely to be sent back to hospital again for mental illness, a new study shows.
The findings challenge a common belief among mental-health experts that smoking is a useful tool in treating some psychiatric patients. For example, cigarettes may be used as part of a reward system or doctors may sometimes smoke together with patients as a way of creating a connection, said Judith Prochaska, an associate professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
Prochaska and her colleagues studied 224 patients at a smoke-free psychiatric hospital in California. All the patients smoked at least five cigarettes a day before being admitted to the hospital. The patients had a range of mental-health conditions, including depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia(精神分裂症). Some had tried committing suicide. All of the patients were offered nicotine patches or gum during their hospitalization.
The patients were divided into two groups. One group took part in a quit-smoking program while a controlled group received usual care. Patients in the controlled group were given a brochure about the danger of smoking, along with some information on how to quit.
The patients in the quit-smoking program completed a computer-assisted program with individualized feedback(意见反馈), receiving a print manual, meeting for 15 to 30 minutes with a counselor and being offered a 10-week supply of nicotine patches if they decided to quit smoking.
Eighteen months after leaving the hospital, 20 percent of those in the treatment group; quit smoking, compared with 7.7 percent of those in the controlled group 44 percent of patients in the treatment group and 56 percent of those in the controlled group were readmitted to the hospital.
The findings show that helping patients quit smoking did not harm their mental-health recovery and to some degree even improved it, Prochaska said.

We've paid lots of attention to baseball poetry here; we took note when Britain gave the call to the Poet Laureate for soccer chants and when the UK Poet Laureate wrote a poem for David Beckham; we explored the poetry of golf (which caused a complaint from one reader offended because we weren't writing about his sport); and for the 2012 Olympic Games, we put together a collection of classic poems on themes of sports, athletics and competition... You certainly don't have to look far to discover that poets all across the world are writing about their sports, lots of sports. A few examples:
Basketball:
There was an anthology (选集) of basketball poems published in 1995 called Slam Dunk, and the Poetry Foundation has posted an excellent online sampler (集锦,荟萃) of poems that "showcase small-town MV Ps, one-on-one games, good-natured underdogs, and the poetic elegance of the swish."
Cricket:
In Australia, there's the Cricket Poetry Award, which invites poets to use a global sport and national pastime as the "vehicle" to unsettle preconceptions, generate new ideas and challenge our contemporary culture. The prize is$ 2,000 (possibly Australian dollars).
Tennis:
In 2010 the All-England Lawn Tennis Club appointed an official poet-in-residence for the Wimbledon Tennis Championship: Matt Harvey, who is well-known in Britain as a humorist and performance poet. What a pity that it doesn't seem to have become a tradition.
Football (i.e., Soccer):
The Football Poets Website, based in England, has been around since the turn of the millennium (千禧年)and its collection is near 15,000 poems.
What's your sport? Send us a poem, your own or a classic that captures what you love about the sport.
36. Why did one reader complain about writing poetry about golf?
A. Because he was not satisfied with the quality of it.
B. Because it was not written by the Poet Laureate.
C. Because his sport hasn't been written about.
D. Because his favorite sports player is David Beckham.
37. If you want to read basketball poems, you'd better choose______.
A. the Poetry Foundation
B. the Cricket Poetry Award
C. the All-England Lawn Tennis Club
D. the Football Poets Website
38. Which description of Matt Harvey is TRUE?
A. He is a well-known Australian performance poet and humorist.
B. He was an appointed poet for the Wimbledon Tennis Championship.
C. He is a member of the All-England Lawn Tennis Club.
D. It becomes a tradition for him to write poems about tennis.
39. What can we learn from the passage?
A. A poem was written for David Beckham by a UN poet.
B. Slam Dunk is the name of an anthology of cricket.
C. The prize given by the Cricket Poetry Award is 2,000 US dollars.
D. The Football Poets Website has spread beyond England.
40. What's the passage mainly about?
A. The introduction of different kinds of sports.
B. The poetry written by famous Poet Laureate.
C. Poets are writing about their sports all across the world.
D. Some well-known websites about different sports.

If you're already holding your fourth cup of coffee of the day, you'd better put it down. Because drinking more than four cups a day could raise your risk of dying young, researchers warn, especially if you're under 55. The findings come from a large-scale American lifestyle study of 43,727 individuals aged 20 to 87.
The US researchers suspect over-consumption of coffee may severely affect the body's metabolism, outweighing some of the known benefits. But the latest study conflicts with a number of others, which have linked moderate coffee consumption with longevity.
Around 2,500 deaths were recorded during the course of the 16-year study. Just under a third of these deaths were because of heart and artery (动脉) disease.
The risk of death from all causes rose by 56 percent for people younger than 55 who drank more than 28 cups of coffee a week, said a report in the journal Mayo Clinic proceedings.
Researcher Steven Blair, of the University of South Carolina, said, "Significantly the results did not prove any association between coffee consumption and all-cause deaths in older men and Women." But the researchers did not explain why coffee did not affect older people in the same way. Coffee contains thousands of different chemicals, which can have both good and bad effects on health.
Recent research .has shown that coffee is a major dietary source of antioxidant, and it may reduce inflammation(炎症) and promote brain fun_ction.
Co-author Dr Carl Lavie, from Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, said, "There continues to be considerable debates about the effects of caffeine."
Dr Euan Paul, executive director of the British Coffee Association, said the study's limitations may have misunderstood the findings. The use of a questionnaire can result in people struggling to remember how many cups of coffee they have consumed in the past week, he said.
Other factors such as smoking and poor fitness could partly explain the link with premature death.
41. What's mainly discussed in the passage?
A. Drinking four cups a day could lower the risk of dying young.
B. Experts claim drinking more than four cups of coffee a day puts you at risk of early death.
C. There is an association between drinking coffee and all-cause deaths in senior people.
D. Drinking coffee causes good and bad effects for the old.
42. Why is the latest studying conflict with some other studies?
A. Because other studies suggest consuming proper coffee can prolong people's life.
B. Because the latest study doesn't show any health benefit of drinking coffee.
C. Because they are not performed at the same period of time and on the same people.
D. Because the latest study only chooses the young people under 55 to study.
43. The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 6 refers to“_______”.
A. coffee B. a major source
C. a research D. a chemical
44. Dr Euan Paul's attitude towards the findings is that ______.
A. he agrees to them
B. he doesn't show his attitude
C. he objects to them completely
D. he doubts them
45. What can be learnt from the passage?
A. About 850 people recorded died from heart and artery disease.
B. The risk of death rose by a half for those who drink 28 cups of coffee a week.
C. Smoking and poor fitness don't have the link with premature death.
D. People over 55 are not affected by coffee in the same way as young people.

It has been said that one of the greatest fears people hold is speaking in front of a group of people. However, there is a kind of speaking that leads to greater fear. This is the fear of having a real
conversation.
Having a conversation is two or more people talking openly and honestly, listening deeply to each other and reaching a common understanding. The art of conversation is not about getting someone to agree with you. It is about seeking and finding a common understanding. The fast goal in conversation is to understand the thinking of the other person. The second goal is to express one's own thinking in a way that the other can understand. Conversation is a way of connecting.
Most of us are afraid of a real conversation. If we really listen to someone else, it may upset our world view, our' self-image or our view of life. We might find out that we are wrong. We might discover what they really feel about us. If we said what we really felt, the other person might be hurt or angry. They might take action .against us.
【写作内容】

2.以约120个词就“与人交流”这一话题发表自己的看法。内容包括:

基础写作 (One possible version)
Li Bai and Du Fu were both famous poets from the Tang Dynasty, but the characteristics of their poems are quite different. Li Bai’s poems mostly express his desire and chase for freedom and personal value and his poems are positive and full of passion. However, Du Fu’s poems mainly reflect the social realities and show his concern about society and the people. What causes the differences is that Li Bai lived in the prosperous Tang Dynasty when the nation was strong and people lived a rich life. However, Du Fu lived in the late Tang Dynasty when there were constant wars and people led a miserable life.
读写任务 (One possible version)
Through a conversation, people can both listen to others’ views and express their own opinions. However, due to various reasons, most people are afraid of having a real conversation.
I used to be afraid of having a conversation with others. I only focused my attention on the passive aspects of a conversation. For one thing, I didn’t want others to learn about my weaknesses through a conversation. For another, I was afraid that others might be angry with me if I pointed out their mistakes.
After reading this text I have come to realize the importance of a real conversation. It is through having a real conversation that we can understand other people and make ourselves understood.
Now I know that the advantages of having a conversation far outweigh the disadvantages of it. I shall be more positive and willing to express my ideas in the future.
