II 阅读
(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
A
If I could change one thing in the world right now, it would be to stop global warming and climate change. Climate change has now become the 2lst century's number one environmental concern. Not only does it affect the way humans live, but it also affects the animals' way of life. It's high
time we did something about it.
Some people may say that global warming isn't serious, but in fact it is. Studies have suggested that by the year 2050 two-thirds of the Earth's polar bears will have died. In 1973, Norway, the United States, Denmark, Canada and the former U.S.S.R. all signed the International Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears and Their Habitat. The Agreement says that "the taking of polar bears shall be prohibited", and that ''the term ''taking' includes hunting, killing and capturing". Well, doesn't it mean killing them by letting them die from global warming? If global warming continues to threaten the polar bears, scientists predict that they will
become extinct within the next century.
Some people say that global warming isn't our fault, but it really is a man-made problem. Things like burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil have caused these climate changes. Agriculture, deforestation (毁林) and industrial processes have also affected the changes. All the coal, gas and oil that we use contribute the carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. These gases are what we call greenhouse gases and they trap heat in the atmosphere. Scientists say that sixty to eighty percent greenhouse gases must be gone by the year 2050 in order to avoid the warming of only two degrees Celsius.
We all need to put forth an effort. By using energy-efficient light bulbs, appliances, computers as well as heating and cooling more efficiently, conserving water, switching to reusable power, reducing air travel, driving less and driving smarter you can help make a difference. Remember, global warming is an issue and it's affecting everyone and everything. We made the mess, so it's time we should clean it up.
26. According to the passage, people now are most concerned about________.
A climate change B. population
C. living standard D. pollution
27. The Agreement was signed to________.
A. prevent global warming
B. protect polar bears and their habitat
C. protect the environment
D. punish those "taking" polar bears
28. How do green gases affect the climate?
A. By warming the atmosphere.
B. By preventing heat from escaping.
C. By burning fossil fuels.
D. By mixing different gases.
29. Which one is NOT helpful in reducing global warming?
A. Using energy-efficient appliances.
B. Heating and cooling more efficiently.
C. Switching to reusable power.
D. Washing with the running water.
30. What's the purpose of the author in writing this passage?
A. To discuss the serious situation polar bears face.
B. To criticize the behavior of human beings towards the environment.
C. To call for people to make a better effort to prevent global warming.
D. To analyze the reasons why the earth is becoming warmer.

Cloning is a highly controversial issue but it has arguably been the dream of many scientists from all over the world. Animal cloning has become increasingly popular, although with disadvantages, since it has been thought to be able to solve problems of rescuing endangered species, reviving extinct species and to solve genetic problems in animals. The first successful cloning in animals-well-known Dolly the sheep - revealed a path in bioengineering (生物工程) that many bioengineers were willing to work on. Dolly showed that cloning animals could really work. However, many have thought much more about human cloning and animal cloning and their ideas about this process have been put into various movies. Here one can read more about cloning in the entertainment industry.
Cloning in movies usually follows the same storyline and it begins with the great discovery of creating life by using a cell from another person or animal. At first, most of these movies describe a rather positive side of the story in terms of revealing how beneficial bioengineering could be and what people could do with it. Yet, most of them then turn to the ethical (伦理的) problems that come with cloning, such as, whether human cloning or animal cloning should be allowed. Animal cloning and its potential negative effects were shown in Jurassic Park, a movie about dinosaurs. Moreover, human cloning has been featured in science fiction movies, including Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, The Expanded Universe or The Clone Wars.
Cloning seems, however, a much more plausible (貌似可信的) phenomenon on screen than in real life, which is attractive to many individuals. Yet, animal cloning can occur in real life and it is
hoped that it will be useful to human and more development will be recorded in the field of
bioengineering.
31. According to the passage, which problem can't be solved through animal cloning?
A. Rescuing endangered species.
B. Reviving extinct species.
C. Solving genetic problems in animals.
D. Facing the ethical problems.
32. What was the significance of Dolly the sheep?
A. It showed human cloning could become true.
B. It led the way for bioengineers to human cloning.
C. It revealed animal cloning was possible.
D. It inspired filmmakers to put Dolly into movies.
33. Which of the following is TRUE about the movies mentioned in the second paragraph?
A. The movies revealed the positive side of animal cloning to human beings.
B. Jurassic Park implied the potential negative aspects of animal cloning.
C. Human cloning was portrayed in all the movies mentioned in this paragraph.
D. Star Wars Episode II is about dinosaurs that everyone knows and has seen.
34. The second paragraph is mainly about______.
A. cloning in science fiction
B. Star Wars Episode II
C. Jurassic Park
D. the entertainment industry
35. It is indicated in the last paragraph that_______.
A. though animal cloning is possible, it is not useful in real life to human beings
B. with the development of bioengineering, human cloning will soon occur in real life
C. cloning in real life is not as useful to humans as that on screen
D. there is a long way to go before animal cloning can be used in the field of bioengineering

According to the USGS, earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains are, uncommon and infrequent. The most active fault zone (断裂带) in the east of the Rockies is the New Madrid Seismic Zone (地震区) which is centered in southeastern Missouri and includes Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and southern Illinois.
During the winter of 1811 and 1812, several earthquakes occurred in the New Madrid Seismic Zone centered near New Madrid, Missouri.
These historic New Madrid earthquakes could be felt in Oklahoma, although the area has not been a hot bed of seismic activity. Most recently a 4.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in eastern Oklahoma near Wewoka on May 2, 1969 and small shakes in the l.0 to 2.0 magnitude range are occasionally registered in the region.
The New Mexico area experienced occasional seismic activity including a 4.1 magnitude quake in 1973 and a 5.5 earthquake in 1966. Minor damage was reported from both quakes.

A fossil of a squirrel-like creature, described as a great-great-grand uncle 165 million years before modern man, has been discovered in China.
The ancient mammalian (哺乳动物) relative, called Megaconus mammaliaformis, is one of the best-preserved fossils of the mammaliaform groups which are long-extinct relatives to modem mammals.
The discovery in Inner Mongolia has also provided evidence that characteristics such as hair and fur originated well before the rise of the first true mammals.
Believed to date back around 165 million years, Megaconus co-existed with feathered dinosaurs in the Jurassic era, nearly 100 million years before Tyrannosaurus Rex appeared on the Earth.
Zhe-Xi Luo, professor of organismal biology and anatomy at the University of Chicago said, "We finally have a glimpse of what may be the ancestral condition of all mammals, by looking at what is preserved in Megaconus."
Preserved in the fossil are some hairs and underfur, making Megaconus only the second known pre-mammalian fossil with fur.
A terrestrial (陆生的) animal about the size of a large ground squirrel, Megaconus was likely an omnivore, possessing clearly mammalian dental features and jaw hinge.
Professor Luo and his team identified clearly non-mammalian characteristics such as its primitive middle ears, still attached to the jaw, are o‰ seen in reptiles.
The Megaconus' anklebones and vertebral column are also similar to the previously known mamma-like reptiles.
Professor Luo said, "We cannot say that Megaconus is our direct ancestor, but it certainly looks like a great-great-grand uncle 165 million years before."
These features are evidence of what our mammalian ancestor looked like during the Triassic-Jurassic transition.
Megaconus shows that much adaptation found in modem mammals was already tried by our distant, extinct relatives.
In a sense, the three big branches of modem mammals are all accidental survivors among many other mammaliaform lineages(血统)that disappeared.
The fossil is now in the collections in the Paleontological Museum of Liaoning in China.
41. Tyrannosaurus Rex probably lived on the earth_______.
A. 165 million years ago
B. 100 million years ago
C. 65 million years ago
D. 265 million years ago
42. According to the passage, Professor Luo believed that______.
A. Megaconus is not our direct ancestor but, rather, our distant great-great-grand uncle
B. the features of Megaconus let us learn more about our mammalian ancestor
C. there was no sign that our distant, extinct relatives learnt how to adapt
D. the three big branches of modem mammals survived from one mammaliaform lineage
43. Which of the following descriptions of Megaconus is TRUE?
A. It is the best-preserved fossil of the mammaliaform groups.
B. It was a squirrel-like animal with hairs and fur living on the land.
C. Its primitive middle ears attached to the jaw are a mammalian characteristic.
D. Its anklebones and vertebral column are the same as the reptiles.
44. It can be inferred from the passage that______.
A. dinosaurs with feathers lived long before Tyrannosaurus Rex
B. we have a thorough understanding of the ancestral condition of all mammals
C. Megaconus is the only known pre-mammalian fossil with fur
D. the fossil is now in the Paleontological Museum of Liaoning in China
45. When does this article most likely appear?
A. Science fiction. B. A news report.

Earth Day comes once a year on 22 April, but we have the whole year to protect our home. As the world population grows, the earth's resources will be used up one day. We are all aware of global warming, greenhouse gases and water pollution. But sometimes, some of us just don't know what
to do to help protect the earth. However, I have been trying the following methods to do my part to protect the environment.
First, we ought to spend less. By this I don't mean we need to lower our living standard. I mean we need to use our resources wisely. Next, we should recycle and reuse. I don't want to throw away anything recyclable. It is simple to sort the metal, paper and plastic for recycling. Then, we should use less energy. I turn off unused lights. In the cooler months I open the windows and doors to allow sunlight in for more light and heat. In the summer, I open the windows and turn on a fan instead of the air conditioner.

A Canadian dentist named Zuko who had paid thirty thousand dollars for just one tooth of John Lennon—the lead singer of the Beatles declared that he wanted to clone another John Lennon. Some people approve because in this way they can again enjoy John Lennon’s singing. However, others are against it because human cloning is still considered illegal at the moment. In addition, even if we can really clone John Lennon’s body, there is some doubt whether we can clone his talent for singing. In conclusion, human cloning still faces technical issues and it is morally wrong.
