Imagine having an app that works like this: When you need help, just open the app, touch the “notOK” button and a text message will be sent to up to five pre-selected(预先选定的) people, along with a location to show where you are. The message reads: “Hey, I’m not OK. Please call me, text me, or come find me”.
US teenagers Hannah Lucas, 15, and her brother Charlie, 13, have created an app called notOK. It came out in the US and Canada on Jan. 31. People just need to pay $1.99 (12.5 yuan) each month to use it.
Hannah was inspired to create the app during a dark time in her life last year. She suffered from a disease that caused her to pass out(昏倒) at school. Other kids sometimes bullied(欺凌)her about this. She felt sad and wanted to find an app that would allow her to get help when she was in trouble.
She asked her brother Charlie, whose nickname is “Tech Support”, to find such an app. When they couldn’t find one, they decided to create one themselves.
They came up with some designs for the app first. Charlie took a programming class last summer and built a website for the app. Hannah also shared her idea in her summer business class. Some app developers showed interest and decided to help her.

Hello! My name is Yuan Ningfei. I go to the City of London School for Girls. I’m 14 years old and now in Year 9. I enjoy reading and drama.
World Book Day has arrived! It is celebrated on April 23 in most countries, but in the UK, it is usually in March. This year, our school invited a writer to talk to us about her life as an author.
The author’s name is Jo Cotterill. She is an English author who lives in Oxfordshire with her husband and daughters. She has won many awards for writing books for children and teenagers.
In her speech, Cotterill told us a lot about her childhood, as well as her love for unicorns(独角兽), her previous job as an actress and, of course, her books.
She also showed us some of her award-winning books and described their plots(情节)for us. I was fascinated by her book A Library of Lemons. It is a story about a girl, Calypso, whose father stops believing in friendship and love after his wife dies. All he believes in are books — he teaches his daughter to close her heart and only love books as well.
As you can see from the book’s title, Cotterill likes to play with words and invent new titles for her books. In fact, her writing career started with inventive(别出心裁的)titles. She said that sometimes she would read in bed on a Sunday and think about interesting titles for new books. She has another book called A Storm of Strawberries. Do you think this title is creative I simply loved Cotterill’s talk. It inspired me to take up my pen again and keep writing.
31. When do people in the UK celebrate the World Book Day
A. In March. B. In April. C. In May.
32. Which of the following is NOT true about Jo Cotterill
A. She gave a speech at the author’s school this year.
B. She has won many awards for writing about actresses.
C. She told the students a lot about herself during her speech.
33. What’s the book A Library of Lemons about
A. Friendship and love
B. Calypso and her father
C. Advice for choosing books
34. What makes Cotterill special as a writer
A. She likes to give creative titles to her books.
B. She enjoys giving speeches about her books.
C. She writes books that are based on real stories.
35. What does the underlined word “inspired” mean in Chinese
A. 督促 B. 消除 C. 激发

Before you read this story, let’s take a look at a sentence: “研表究明,汉字序顺并不一定影阅响读。” 36. __________________ You might not realize it, but your brain can read and understand most sentences, even when the words are in the wrong order.
This may have something to do with psychology(心理学). When we’re first learning how to read, we read word by word. 37. __________________ People can read five to six words at one time. Also, as experienced readers, we take the things we’re familiar with for granted. We don’t pay as much attention to small details, such as word order. Therefore, when we read the sentence at the beginning of this article, the content(内容) was familiar to us. So we read it the way we think it should be in our memory, with all the words in the right order. 38. __________________ We assume(认为)the person is a girl without taking a closer look.
39. __________________ Read the following sentence: “This is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the word as a wlohe.” It is believed that humans remember the meanings of words mostly by their shape and layout(布局), rather than the order of the letters.
40. __________________ We cannot read them as quickly and efficiently as we read normal text.
A. This can be also seen in many other languages, such as English. B. Did you notice that some of the characters in this sentence are in the wrong order C. But after we become more experienced, we read in full phrases and even sentences. D. However, these sentences can cause problems. E. This is like when we see a person with long hair.

In most classes, students sit at desks and listen to teachers in a classroom. But in a new class at Chapman Middle School (CMS) in Kansas, US, students are leaving the blackboards behind for blue skies and green grass.
They are actually taking an outdoor life class. It’s not a typical class, but teachers are trying it out. “We want kids to experience different activities in the open air.” the class’ teacher John Harris said.
Twenty-six students attend the term-long class. The class includes four parts: archery(射箭), hunting safety, survival skills(生存技能)and fishing. All these classes will teach students how to be alive in the real natural environment. Students will also discuss how to protect natural resources.
Before Harris’ class this year, archery teacher Andy Fewin taught a 9-week outdoor life class. All CMS students took it. And they were all excited about it. They had no such kind of training before. “It gets kids involved(参与)in something other than sitting and playing video games,” Fewin said.
Harris shares the same idea. He believes everyone needs to enjoy life and get outside. “The outdoor life class aims to get the kids interested in coming to school and enjoying their class time.” Harris said. But he ensured that everyone needed to finish their other work first. “It really teaches them to focus and pay attention in class. If they don’t, then they’ll miss out on the fun things we’re doing,” he said.
