Can you list inventions made by kids Sometimes those inventions were actually patented (获专利) later in life when the inventors were adults, but the first idea was often put forward while they were kids.
Frank Epperson invented the Popsicle when he was just 11 years old. One night in 1905, in San Francisco, Frank mixed a fruit soft drink with soda powder and water to create a kind of drink, popular at the time. The stick he used to create the mixture was left in the glass, and the glass was left outside the entire night. When he woke up in the morning, he found the "drink" frozen to the stick after a very cold night. Though he tasted this accidental frozen creation and even showed it to others, he didn't do anything else with it at the time. It was only 18 years later, in 1923 that Frank gained a patent for the “frozen ice on a stick" and started selling it. Next time you eat a frozen treat, think about the 11-year-old boy who left his drink in the cold.
Chester Greenwood was just a 15-year-old kid testing a new pair of ice skates, in cold Maine, back in 1873. His ears were cold and he tried several ways to protect them. He started to tie a
scarf (围巾 ) around his head, but it was uncomfortable. He then made two circles out of wire and asked his grandmother to sew fur on them. This is how the earmuffs(御寒耳罩) were invented. He improved his model and patented it under the title: improved ear protectors. He set up a company that sold his earmuffs. He later on made many other inventions, such as a tea kettle and an advertising matchbox.

Food is not just goods to be bought and sold. We can't live without it, and it plays an important role in our culture and daily lives.
Food in the provinces of Eastern Canada shows signs of English traditions, except in Quebec
where the influence (影响) is French. In the provinces of Western Canada, the style of cooking has something to do with the explorers and settlers, who, like their southern neighbors in the United States, made simple meals from local ingredients. In Northern Canada - Northwest, Yukon and Nunavut territories - the diet is limited by the short growing season and influenced by the native Inuit diet. And along the west coast in British Columbia, people from Asian nations influence food and cultural practices.
Canadians' favorite foods vary slightly from area to area, and are strongly influenced by their family traditions, especially having something to do with holiday celebrations. Along the Atlantic coast, seafood and dishes from English traditions (except in Quebec) are common. In Quebec, people's favorite foods come from French families. Throughout Canada, maple products are popular, reflecting the importance of the maple tree, whose leaf appears in the flag of Canada. Many families enjoy a visit in early spring to a maple sugar "shack", a special simple building
where sap (汁) from maple trees is boiled in a large open pan to make maple syrup.
Later in the spring, many people in Eastern Canada visit a wooded (长满树木的 ) area to harvest fiddleheads, which are named because they look like the end of a violin(“fiddle"). They have to be picked before they develop into large leaves. They are usually picked for just a few weeks in the spring. Grocery stores in Canada may keep frozen fiddleheads with other frozen vegetables.
36. The writer's purpose in writing the first paragraph is to ______.
A. entertain readers
B. persuade readers
C. draw readers' attention to the topic
D. show the importance of food in Canada
37. According to the passage, the food in America mainly influences that in _____.

When George Dennehy was a young boy, he never dreamed he would serve others as a motivational speaker and musician. But the armless teenager has spent the last couple of years sharing his story and encouraging others.
Born without arms in Romania, Dennehy's condition was terrible, so his parents turned him over to an orphanage (孤儿院), and finally, Dcnnehy was brought up by a family in America.
Early on, he says his American parents noticed his musical abilities. "When I was 8 years old, my mom decided to sign me up for cello lessons and I started playing," he says, admitting that he "didn't really enjoy it". His first teacher, Shalley, helped him play with his feet.
"She actually learned to play the cello with her feet. She wanted to see if it was possible to do it. She made up foot exercises to do. I am really grateful for what she has done for me," he says.
At the beginning of high school, when the cello became not so cool to play, Dennehy took up playing the guitar and picked it up pretty fast.
"It was necessary, though, to learn the cello first, because it's the hardest of all to play," he says. "The only difference in the guitar is that I'm playing the cords (弦)." Dennehy uses a standard guitar. "I play in the same tune as everyone else does," he notes.
Learning to play music hasn't been an easy road. He was shy at first. But every time he got on stage to perform or play music, he could see how the audience admired him for his abilities and that gave him confidence to chase(追求) his dream.
No matter what situation we're in, anything is possible. It is so easy to want to give up sometimes. But we shouldn't do that. There's more that is meant for us.

B. He thinks it easy to learn the guitar.
C. He thinks he learned it carelessly.
D. He thinks he learned it patiently.
44. According to the passage, when did Dennehy get confidence in running after his dream
A. After the audience appreciated his abilities.
B. When Shalley taught him to play the cello.
C. After he played the guitar well in high school.
D. When he shared his story and encouraged others.
45. What does the author most want to tell us in the last paragraph
A. Failure is the mother of success.

第二节读写任务(共1小题;满分25分) ‘
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
US Education Secretary Margaret Spelling thought girls' infrequently taking part in maths and science activities is keeping them from achieving their full potential (潜能) and influencing the nation's ability to compete. "This is all about global competitiveness(竞争力)," once she said at a meeting, "We can't do what we need to do to create high-skill, high-income jobs for our country if we don't pay enough attention to the science education of half our population."
Government data show that girls fall behind boys in maths and science as they progress through school. In the fourth grade, 68 percent of boys and 66 percent of girls say that they like science according to the National Center for Education Statistics. But only one-third of high school students who take physics classes are girls. Spellings said, "At the college level, fewer than one-fifth of engineering students are women." The former astronaut Sally Ride has suggested several methods for keeping girls interested in maths and science, including offering after-school or summer programs to them. She also has suggested introducing girls to women scientists. It's time to allow women to put women's faces on these careers.
An expert thought it's very important to tell parents it is wrong to think that girls are not good at maths or science. Some mothers probably send signals to their daughters that maths skills aren't important for them.

基础写作(One possible version)
Robert Fulton, who was born in a poor family in 1765, was considered one of the greatest inventors in the world. When he was a child, his parents couldn’t afford his education so he only studied in school for a few years. At the age of 17, he started to make a living on his own, and he went to England to study drawing at the age of 22, during which he got to know Watt, the inventor of the steam engine. And it was from then on that he decided to become an engineer. Finally, he became the inventor of the first ship in the world and made great contribution to human water transport.
读写任务 (One possible version)
US experts call for great attention to the girls’ maths and science education. From high school to college, there are fewer and fewer girls learning maths and science. So parents are warned to pay more attention to their daughters’ learning them.
At school, most of girls don’t like maths and science. They think maths and science are difficult subjects. What’s more, some parents think girls are born to be poor at them, which, in some way, will make many girls afraid of studying them!
I don’t agree to the above. It is true that girls are not good at maths and science at school. But great women scientists have proved that girls can do as well in them as boys do. For instance, Madam Curie, a Nobel Prize winner, set a good example to us.
If girls want to learn maths and science well, they should make up their minds at the beginning, and their parents and teachers should often encourage them and give them timely advice or guidance, especially when they meet with some difficulties.
