In 1956 Brazil's President wanted to move the capital city from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia. The government chose an excellent Brazilian architect (建筑师) to build Brasilia, and his name was Oscar Niemeyer.
Niemeyer was born in Rio de Janiero in 1907. He had been a well-respected architect by the time he was 30 years old. Niemeyer was a great artist. His design was very different from that of the other buildings at the time. Most other buildings had straight lines up and down.

Niemeyer was very excited to design the main buildings of Brasilia. He designed a building called the Palace of the Dawn, which was a house for the President. This building looks like floating (漂浮) above the ground. It has half circles around it. These shapes are very light and beautiful, and arc reflected (映出) in a lake around the palace.
Niemeyer also designed the National Congress building. This government building has many parts. The biggest part is two tall towers rising straight up into the air. On one side of this part is a white .building. It is designed like a bowl. On the other side are buildings, whose shapes are not the usual design of government buildings.
"If you go to see Brasilia, you may or may not like the buildings, but you could never say you have seen something similar before," Niemeyer said. "What is important is that the designer thinks of more than design. Our role is to produce architecture serving everyone, not just a group of important people," he said.

Everywhere today, people are trying to go green. Our family first started to try some green ways without even knowing that we were going green. You see, my family have been in love with gardening for many years and have never bought fertilizers. We have been using human and animal waste to make soil rich.
Well, as more and more people are trying to live green we have decided to go green in other areas of our life. We often sell our delicious fruit in town. Recently, we decided to find ways to reduce our gas use. We bought an electric car conversion kit (转换配件) and used it in our car. Since making this change, we have saved a huge amount of money.

The kids are starting to get close to the driving age, so we have asked them to learn about the car they want when they are 16. However, we have told them that the car must be fuel-efficient(节能的). I remember how it was when I was a young man at college. I used to drive around with my friends on a Friday night, going from one place to another to meet up with people. Children's drawings are very interesting because they tell us something about the children. For example, happy children often choose bright colours. Sad or lonely children usually choose darker colours. The shapes of the pictures that children draw tell us even more about them. Here are some examples.
Some children were asked to draw a tree. Look at the first tree. There are no branches. There is no fruit. There is only one shape. The child who drew this is probably quiet and a little lonely. He, or she, may also be a little nervous. There is some fruit on the second tree and there are some thick, heavy branches on the third tree. The children who drew these are probably braver children who want very much to be successful in life. The tree in the fourth drawing was probably drawn by a different kind of child. He, or she, is interested in many things and will find it hard to decide what kind of work he or she wants to, do when leaving school.
Now look at these pictures of bunches (束) of grapes.
The child who drew Picture 5 likes things to be well arranged, neat and tidy. The pattern is regular but the child has tried a little to make the grapes look real. The child who did Picture 6 wanted it to look like a real bunch of grapes. There is no regular pattern. The stem is sloping (倾斜). This child is the best artist of the three. The last child simply wanted a pretty picture. He or she did not care at all whether the picture looks like a real bunch of grapes. The pattern is regular, like Picture 5, but not so successful. This child is not as skilful as the other two.
41. According to Paragraph l, which parts of the drawings tell us more about children
A. The colours.
B. The paints.
C. The shapes.
D. The trees.
42. The first tree was probably drawn by a child who is ______.

B. brave
C. happy
D. friendly
43. Which picture shows that the child has difficulty choosing work
A. Picture l.
B. Picture 2.
C. Picture 3.
D. Picture 4.

基础写作(One possible version)
In the last three years there have been great changes in our school. The road which used to be made from cement has now become a pitch road and the flowers in the garden bloom all year round. The small playground, where we used to have P.E. classes, has now been replaced by a big plastic one. As for our classrooms, the previous ones have been replaced by high-rise buildings with multimedia equipment in every classroom. All of the students wear school uniforms, which makes the whole campus full of energy.
读写任务 (One possible version)
Melissa was moved by a girl’s candor. Then she told a white lie and helped the girl with her wish to get a Christmas gift not for herself but for her mother.
I was deeply moved by the story, because the two girls are passing love on to each other. Such positive energy makes us warm in the heart and more confident in our life.
The story naturally reminds me of Chen Yibing, the captain of Chinese men’s gymnastics team in 2012 London Olympics. When Chinese team fell to the worst and were expected not to get into the final, they unexpectedly gave the world an unbelievable performance and won the champion. How could they make it Chen Yibing told us later, “Facing failures and difficulties, we cared about and encouraged each other all the time.”
It is obvious that positive energy has led to Chinese team’s success. Actually, every one of us hopes to be cared about, and every one of us needs to be recognized or encouraged. No complaining. No criticizing!
