When you touch something, your brain knows. The hand sends signals to the brain to announce the contact is made. But the feeling of touch may not require touching anything, tests in monkeys now show. Activating (激活) brain cells can fool the animal into thinking its fingers have touched something.
A person who has lost a hand may need an artificial one to complete everyday tasks. But such patients may not truly feel anything they hold. The new findings point toward creating a sense of touch one day for those who use artificial limbs. Psychologist Sliman Bensmaia of the University of Chicago worked on the new tests.
"The sense of touch is crucial to everyday tasks. People without it may have difficulty breaking an egg, lifting a cup or even turning a doorknob. That's why restoring (重建) this sense is a major goal for designers of artificial limbs," Bensmaia said.
In his new study, Bensmaia and his co-workers worked with monkeys. The scientists placed electrodes, which are small devices(装置) that can find electrical signals into the animals' brains. Then they trained the monkeys to look in a certain direction whenever a particular finger was touched. The electrodes took notes of the animals' brain activity during the touch. The scientists used the electrode data to see which brain cells had become active. Now the scientists used the electrodes placed in the monkeys' brains to activate those same brain cells. And the monkeys reacted as though their finger had been touched. In fact, it hadn't.
The study shows how artificial limbs might be connected to the brain so that a person can "feel" with such artificial limbs. But such a device doesn't exist yet and scientists have a lot of work to do before people will benefit from one. Researchers must first figure out whether the electrodes would work in people the same way they do in monkeys. Bensmaia says such tests could happen soon.
36. From Paragraph I we learn that during the tests______.
A. the feeling of touch comes from touching something
B. foolish monkeys were used
C. the monkeys didn't touch anything
D. there was something wrong with the monkeys' fingers
37. What is implied about people using artificial hands
A. They can hold something very easily.
B. They can't use such hands to do anything.
C. Their artificial hands lack the feeling of touch.
D. Their artificial hands are as useful as the true ones.
38. What does the underlined word "crucial" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Strict. B. Skilful.
C. Amazing. D. Important.
39. What did the author tell us in Paragraph 4
A. How long the tests lasted in all.
B. How the scientists tested the monkeys.

An Australian was left fighting for-his life after being bitten by a shark in what was, unbelievably, his second such attack in less than a decade.
In order to be saved after a marathon effort to bring him to the mainland from 200km to the sea, Greg Pickering was operated on several times in 24 hours.
Pickering, 55, was diving for abalone(鲍鱼) on Tuesday morning off the coast of Western Australia's Cape Arid National Park. It was then that he was attacked by a great white shark.
Police were alerted(警觉的) at 10:30 am local time on Tuesday, but Pickering did not reach Royal Perth Hospital until that evening. He was first brought to land by divers, then taken to Esperance Hospital by ambulance and finally airlifted 700km to Perth.
A kill order has been issued for the shark which attacked Pickering, but authorities have admitted they will not be able to tell whether it is the right shark until it has been killed.
It took the doctors 10 hours to operate on Pickering at Royal Perth Hospital.
The first time he was attacked by a shark was in 2004 and was bitten on the leg; fortunately, the injury was not as much serious as he thought.
Stuart Smith, the director general of the Department of Fisheries, has ordered traps be set up to catch and kill the animal. He says sharks are a danger to campers in the area and he also emphasizes that there is a possibility the wrong one might be killed. He told ABC Radio on Wednesday, "We probably won't know for sure unless there's evidence of DNA that we will be able to test."
It is the second time a kill order has been issued in Western Australia. The first was also for a great white, although it was never found.
Pickering has been diving for abalone for about 40 years. He also made news headline in 2009 when the boat he was diving from capsized(倾覆) and he spent three hours in the water with the sailor before being rescued.

Today, an American teen would no longer call up his classmates to see what they are doing on Friday night. Instead, he or she is increasingly likely to check online.
MySpace, the social networking website, is different from other websites, and it is-a place that allows you to broadcast your own stories and personal information to as many people as you like. Started ten years ago, it is a big source of information for American kids. Teens are rushing to join the site, instead of sharing their ideas with their parents. For teenagers, it is a reliable network to keep in touch with their friends. They often list their surnames, birthdays, after-school jobs, school clubs, hobbies and other person al information.
However, parents are seriously concerned about the security problems of MySpace. "Every time we hold a parents' meeting, the first question is always about MySpace," said Kent Gates, who travels the country doing Internet safety seminars (研讨会). A musical lecture was given by Professor Smith from California University, a famous musician in America who is now lecturing in a university in Guangzhou. The lecture was held in our school hall last Friday afternoon, from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The professor introduced to us the American music history as well as some kinds of music, such as soul music, blues, hip hop and so on. Besides, he informed us of how Americans enjoy music and also improvised quite a few American pop songs. In the lecture, I not only learned more about American music but also was deeply attracted by his performance.
读写任务 (One possible version)
MySpace is getting more and more popular with American teenagers because it helps them to speak their minds and make friends. But MySpace has brought their parents too much worry.
MySpace is necessary for the development of the social networking website, I think. Living in today’s fast-paced society, teenagers need a fast and convenient platform to make friends and relax themselves!
I have quite a few friends who like making friends online. They often chat on QQ, microblog or Facebook whenever they are free. Now that they don’t know each other, they can freely exchange their happiness and sorrow, including secrets. So they usually enjoy themselves in their communication.
We should be careful of making friends online. First, don’t be too crazy about chatting online. Then, don’t believe anyone online easily or go alone for an appointment. We should find friendship in our classmates and other people around us.

  本文是一篇新闻报道,报道了一个澳大利亚人在不到十年的时间内,两次遭到鲨鱼的攻击并幸存下来的故事。
41. B。主旨大意题。根据文章第一段A West Australian was left fighting for his life after being bitten by a shark in what was, unbelievably, his second such attack in less than a decade可知,本文主要介绍了一个澳大利亚人在不到十年的时间内,两次遭到鲨鱼的攻击并幸存下来的事。
42. A。词意理解题。根据第二段In order to be saved...operated on several times in 24 hours可知,医生为了救治Greg Pickering耗费了很多的时间和努力,其中包括把他从海边送到200km远的内陆。
43. C。推理判断题。根据倒数第二段The first was also for a great white可知两次的捕杀令都是由同一种类型的大白鲨引起的。文中并没有提到两次的捕杀令都是因为Pickering被攻击后所发出的,所以排除D项。也没有证据说明这两次袭击事件是由同一只大白鲨引起的,所以排除A项。由they will not be able to tell whether it is the right shark until it has been killed可知这只大白鲨还没有被抓到,所以排除B项。
44. A。细节理解题。根据倒数第三段We probably won’t know for sure unless there’s evidence of DNA that we will be able to test可知通过检测DNA才有证据证明是不是确切要杀的那只白鲨。
45. D。推理判断题。根据最后一段Pickering has been diving for abalone for about 40 years and also made news headline in 2009可知,主要讲了Pickering的又一次惊险的经历,并登上了报纸的头版头条。
