Tu Youyou was born in 1930 in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. She was admitted to Peking University in 1951, where she was hugely enthusiastic about pharmacognosy, her major course. It was she who discovered artemisinin. It is such a crucial new medicine for malaria treatment that without it, 100,000 Africans would die of malaria a year.
Tu Youyou has been and still is distinguished for her tremendous vigour and outstanding endurance. She has been persevering in medical research with one hundred percent commitment for more than half a century and has become the idol of us Chinese students.
