Spoken English Learning
#221: How should we improve our spoken English (By Mandy).
A great thing about learning a language is that you don’t have to sit down with a textbook for many hours and learning English doesn’t mean doing grammar exercises all the time. Well, you can live in English and watch English TV shows. You can read books and texts and you can travel. You can do everything in English.
That’s why we are doing this. Use English in real daily conversations. We want to show people it’s not strange for Chinese to communicate in English. We want to tell everybody that we should be confident of our accents. And “speak out” is the first step of learning English. In this video, you’re going to watch many funny conversations and gradually improve spoken English.

I went to London with my parents during the summer vacation. We spent ten days there so that we could visit all the places of interest in the city. On the first day we just rested in the hotel in the morning and visited the London Eye in the afternoon. On the second day we visited the Palace of Westminster and Tower Bridge. We visited other places in the next eight days and enjoyed ourselves a lot.
I spent my summer vacation with my grandparents in the countryside and I had a good time. Living in the countryside used to be inconvenient, but I’m glad that many things have changed. For example, the roads are flat and wide. And there are several big parks and hospitals. To my surprise, my grandparents even have learned to use the computer and surf the Internet!
My hometown is a small town near the sea. I used to visit it because the air was fresh. But I was surprised when I visited my hometown this summer. The sky there was gray and most of the people there wore masks (口罩) on the street. Someone told me that there was a big factory in the town and it polluted both air and water. I was sad to hear that.
I used to go traveling during the summer vacation, but this year I just stayed at home because my little cousin came. He was really a cute boy. I played with him and taught him many things such as playing basketball and cooking. We also went swimming. And in the swimming pool, he was my teacher! He stayed at my home for twenty days and I expect to see him again next summer.

People have tried many times to produce electricity. Let’s look at some inventions for producing and using electricity.
Windmills were invented in the 7th century. Marcellus Jacobs first thought of using the power of windmills to produce electricity in 1930.
Diesel generators are often used in some shops, hotels and restaurants to produce electricity when the power is off.
In 1800, Alessandro Volta succeeded in building a voltaic pile to produce electricity. His voltaic pile was the first battery in the world.
Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison spent months producing a light bulb and they worked together to make their invention in 1879.
In fact, nature also has its own ways of producing electricity. Not just lightning, some animals also produce electricity. For example, some fish produce enough electricity to attack other animals, while others produce electricity to stop other animals from attacking them.

Glass frogs (青蛙) are not actually made of glass. But their skin is transparent, just like glass. In fact, the skin on the underside of a glass frog is so clear that you can see inside its body. Without using an X-ray machine, you can see the frog’s heart and other organs (器官) . Sometimes you can even see blood or food moving through the body.
The glass frog lives high in the trees above rivers during the dry season. When the rainy season comes, it climbs down to the stream level to produce babies. These unusual-looking frogs can be difficult to find in the rain forests of Central and South America. The clear skin on their fronts and the light green color of their backs often blend in (融入) with the leaves they rest on. Also, they are tiny — just about the size of a coin.
These frogs make up for their small size with an interesting way of catching insects. Scientists believe the glass frog’s back looks like the frog’s eggs. If a fly (苍蝇) flies down for a meal on the frog’s back, it will be in for a surprise when the glass frog opens its mouth.
The glass frog’s real eggs are protected by the males (雄性) . Male glass frogs are very protective of their eggs. To keep away unwanted guests, a male glass frog will try to scare away any other male frog that gets too close. At first, the male frog makes loud noises to warn the other male frog to leave the area. If that does not work, then the frogs may fight with each other until one gives up and leaves. These fights can last for thirty minutes.

Guess which city will be the host of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games The two candidates, Beijing (together with Zhangjiakou in Hebei) and Almaty in Kazakhstan are waiting to find out who will win.
The International Olympic Committee Evaluation Commission (评估团) visited Beijing and Zhangjiakou from March 24 to 28, 2015 to see whether the two cities meet the standards for hosting the Games.
If Beijing wins, it will be the first city in history to organize both summer and winter Olympic Games.
The nearly perfect organization of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games showed the city’s abilities. The city would make use of old competition areas instead of building new ones. Beijing plans to host most of the ice events in six existing venues (赛场) including the Water Cube.
Snow events will be held in Chongli County in Zhangjiakou. The county, about an hour’s ride from Beijing, has over four months’ snowfall a year, which would provide enough snow for the competitions. Moreover, the winter temperature there is suitable for the Winter Olympic Games.
But a problem may get in the way — haze (雾霾). It will be a disadvantage for Beijing.
Competition for holding the Olympics is always strong because it influences the host city and its people deeply.
“If Beijing wins, it will help improve transportation in the two cities and reduce Beijing’s air pollution,” said Beijing mayor (市长) Wang Anshun. “Around 600,000 jobs will be created. The events will also encourage more young people to take part in winter sports.”
