Vocabulary and Reading --How Good Are Your Social Skills
Teaching aims:
Knowledge aims:
1. enable the students to get the main idea of the passage.
2. enable them to learn some social skills.
Ability aims:
1. enable the students to use different strategies of reading(skimming、scanning)
2. develop their capacity of making small talk in social communication
Emotional aims:
enable the students to boost their confidence of social communication
Teaching important and difficult points:
How to use the social skills in communication
Analysis of the students:
The learners are 47 senior 2 students, who are divided into 8 groups. In each group, there are two students whose language ability is relatively higher and another two who need help in English learning. Although their abilities vary from one to another, basically, they can master the language knowledge easily with a preview of the words and certain reading skills. What is difficult for them is to apply what they learned to daily communication. To solve the problem, the teacher will ask them to do a task to practice their speaking and communication abilities in each stage of learning.
Teaching procedures:
Step1 Feedback of the quiz about new words:
Students didn’t do well with these words: awkward, sigh, advance and advanced. So some exercises about them are given.
Purpose: to remove the word obstacle
Step 2 Lead in:
1. show a video of two foreigners doing small talk at a party, then ask the students: What is the relationship between the two speakers
Where are they
What are they talking about
2. Lead the students to take a psychological test to judge their social skills.
The questions are:
①Have you ever crossed the road to avoid talking to someone you recognize (yes-1 point, no-2points)
②Would you love to go to a party and talk confidently to every guest ( yes-2, no-1)
③Do you want to make more friends but lack the confidence to talk to people you don’t know (yes-1, no-2)
④Are you nervous about the idea of being at a social event in another country (yes-1, no-2)
Purpose: to arouse the students’ interest and lead in the body part
Step 3: Skimming
1. Ask the students to skim the passage and decide what kind of book the passage is from. (C)
A. an English teaching book
B. a business course
C. a book which tells you what to do at social events
D. a book to help you prepare for a speaking examination
purpose: to train their ability of skimming by stress the importance title and subtitles
2. Enable the students to speak out how many tips are given on what to do at social events
purpose: to make the Ss clear about the structure of the passage
Step 4. Scanning:
Ask the students to finish the tasks for each tip
purpose: get detailed information develop their reading skills of scanning
Tip 1(para.3) Answer questions:
1. What should we prepare to make proper small talk
2. Give some examples of safe topics and high-risk topics
Activity: Ss work in pairs and choose a topic to do small talk
Tip2 (para.4-6) Show how to be a good listener by filling in the table.
Dos Don’ts
Activity: Ss enrich the small talk they made in last period by adding some listening skills.
Tip3. (para.7-8) Fill in the blanks to learn social rules.
Remember that _social rules_ can be different in different countries. In some countries, you have to arrive on time at a party. In other countries, you don’t need to. In addition_, you need to know how long you should stay. In some places, you can take things such as flowers or a small gift. But in other places you needn’t, if you don’t want to. Remember that in some countries, you mustn’t take flowers of a certain color
Step 5 Consolidation:
It’s time for group work. The teacher will ask the Ss to work in groups and make small talk in one of the following situations:
①at a wedding ceremony
②taking a taxi
③at a new class
Purpose: give them a chance to show their language output and create a environment for them to apply social skills in daily communication
Step 6 Summary
Finish the form by asking the students “What have you learned in this class ”
purpose: make a summary of the whole passage to enhance what they learned
Step 7 Homework:
Your pen friend Michael is going to visit China as an exchange student. Please write a letter to him, offering advice on how to behave properly in social communication in China.
