第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A (2013江苏省扬州中学月考)
Every day we experience one of the wonders of the world around us without even realizing it. It is not the amazing complexity of television, nor the impressive technology of transport. The universal wonder we share and experience is our ability to make noise with our mouths, and so transmit ideas and thoughts to each other’s minds. This ability comes so naturally that we tend to forget what a miracle it is.
Obviously, the ability to talk is something that marks humans off from animal. Of course, some animals have powers just as amazing, Birds can fly thousands miles by observing positions of the stars in the sky in relation to the time of day and year. In Nature’s talent show, humans are a species of animal that have developed their own special act. If we reduce it to basic terms, it’s an ability for communicating information to others, by varying sounds we make as we breathe out.
Not that we don’t have other powers of communication. Our facial expressions convey our emotions, such as anger, or joy, or disappointment. The way we hold our heads can indicate to others whether we are happy or sad. This is so-called “body language”. Bristling(直立的) fur is an unmistakable warning of attack among many animals. Similarly, the bowed head or drooping tail shows a readiness to take second place in any animal gathering.
Such a means of communication is a basic mechanism that animals, including human beings, instinctively acquire and display. Is the ability to speak just another sort of instinct? If so, how did human beings acquire this amazing skill? Biologist can readily indicate that particular area of our brain where speech mechanisms fun_ction, but this doesn’t tell us how that part of our bodies originated in our biological history.
36. According to the passage, the wonder we take for granted(认为理所当然) is________.
A. our ability to use language B. the miracle of technology
C. the amazing power of nature D. our ability to make noises with mouth
37. What feature of “body language” mentioned in the passage is common to both human and animals?
A. Lifting heads when sad. B. Keeping long faces when angry.
C. Bristling hair when ready to attack. D. Bowing heads when willing to obey.
38. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. Body language is unique to humans.
B. Animals express emotions just as humans do.
C. Humans have other powers of communication.
D. Humans are no different from animals to some degree.
39. This passage is mainly about _______.
A. the development of body language.
B. the special role humans play in nature
C. the power to convey information to others
D. the difference between humans and animals in language use

C (2013辽宁省沈阳铁路实验中学期中)
Tourism probably started in Roman times. Rich Romans visited friends and family who were working in another part of the Roman empire. But when the empire broke down, this kind of tourism stopped.
In the early 17th century, the idea of the“Grand Tour”was born. Rich young English people sailed across the English Channel. They visited the most beautiful and important European cities of the time, including Paris in France, and Rome and Venice in Italy. Their tours lasted for two to four years, and the tourists stayed a few weeks or months in each city. The“Grand Tour”was an important part of young people’s education—but only for the rich.
In the 18th century, tourism began to change. For example, people in the UK started to visit some towns, such as Bath to“take the waters”.They believed that the water there was good for their health. So large and expensive hotels were built in these towns.
In the 19th century, travel became much more popular and faster. When the first railways were built in the 1820s,it was easier for people to travel between towns, so they started to go for holidays by the sea. And some started to have holidays in the countryside as cities became larger, noisier and dirtier
Traveling by sea also became faster and safer when the first steamships were built. People began to travel more to far away countries.
The 20th century saw cars become more and more popular among ordinary people. Planes were made larger, so ticket prices dropped and more people used them.
Thus tourism grew. In 1949, Russian journalist Vladimir Raitz started a company called Horizon Holidays. The company organizes everything—plane tickets, hotel rooms, even food—and tourists pay for it all before they leave home. The package tour and modern tourist industry was born.
The first travel agency in China was set up as early as 1949.But tourism did not take off until 1978.In 2002,the industry was worth 500 billion Yuan and became an important part of China’s social development.
43. In the early times, the travelers ________.
A. all came from Roman B. were very young and strong
C. had lots of money D. traveled by boat
44. ________ played the most important role in the tourism development.
A. Education B. Money C. Transportation D. People’s ideas
45. Modern tourism was born ________.
A. in 1949 B. in Roman times
C. in the early 17th century D. in the 19th century
46. The underlined phrase“take off”means ________.
A. a plane rising into the air B. develop very fast
C. remove hats and clothes D. bring down the prices

If you plan on visiting to Fiji, you are probably looking for some fun things to do. Below are four unusual places
The Poseidon Resort
The Poseidon resort is an underwater resort that gives visitors a beautiful view of sea life. This resort covers 255 acres. It’s covered and surrounded by a lagoon (咸水湖) that covers 5,000 acres and is about 90 feet under water, giving you a beautiful view of sea life right before your eyes. This resort even has a hotel for those who would prefer to have the unusual experience of sleeping and waking up to the beautiful scenery all around them.
The Sabeto Mud Pool
If you’re looking for something unusual to do, you can’t pass up the mud pool at Sabeto. It is located in a mountain range with a huge group of Geothermal (地热的) pools full of nice, warm mud. Getting down and into the mud in the pool is believed to have benefits for healthy skin. This is unusual, but adults and especially kids will love it.
Fire Walking
Fire walking in Fiji is believed to have originated on the island of Beau. Fire walking is when you walk on white-hot stones barefoot. To do this, you have to be mentally prepared for it. Trust me; there is a lot of preparation and strict rules that travelers follow in order to do this safely.
The Fiji Museum
The Fiji museum is unusual due to all the amazing artifacts you’ll see dating back 3,000-4,000 years. This museum has a certain attraction that makes it funny—a shoe. It’s been said that a man named Thomas Baker was eaten by the locals several centuries ago and the only thing left was his shoe. This unusual museum is a great idea if you bring the whole family to Fiji.

In some middle schools, iPads are introduced into classrooms to replace traditional textbooks and assist teachers as well as students in teaching and learning. For us students, we have different opinions toward this phenomenon. Some of us hold the view that it’s a better way to save paper, which definitely does good to environment protection. Moreover, using iPads brings us efficiency and convenience.
However, others tend to believe that iPad costs so much money that not everyone can afford it. Besides, if we spend large quantities of time playing games on it, there is a high risk of being addicted to it, which of course will have bad impact on study.
As for me, I’m in favor of using iPad for we can search for abundant information which can’t be found in traditional textbooks. Of course, every bean has its black. Therefore, it’s a matter of how we can use it properly, not whether we should use it.
