A woman in Pulaski, Virginia, says she was stopped by a squirrel, who pulled on her leg repeatedly and led her to help its injured baby.
Tia Powell was walking in Kiwanis Park when she was "approached by a squirrel", the Pulaski Police Department wrote on Facebook. The squirrel stood in her way on the path. After realizing that the squirrel did not mean any harm and wasn't going to leave her side, Powell turned around and the squirrel led her down the path to a baby squirrel with an injured leg.
At one point, Powell wasn't sure she could help and she began walking and the squirrel followed her again and actually pulled her trouser leg! So, she fed the squirrels a sandwich she had with her and watched them try to jump up into a tree. When she realized the baby squirrel was still struggling to get up the tree, she decided to call in backup. Powell called the Pulaski Police Department.
Powell didn't know how the baby squirrel got injured, but she thought a nearby street cat was the culprit(肇事者). So, the group of rescuers decided to move the squirrels to safer area. "We were able to get the baby and mother to a different area with more trees and it was able to climb all the way up and they looked very happy," Powell said.
She went back a few days later to show her kids where it all went down. In the trees, Powell spotted two squirrels staring at her, and couldn't help but wonder if they were the same squirrels she rescued.

Mom and I were putting the finishing touches on dinner, and my little niece Jessica came in to set the table. Instead of going to the dish cabinet, she went into the pantry where there was a stack of old, mismatched dinner plates on the bottom shelf.
When she had set all six places, she stood back and sighed, "Oh, Grandma, your plates are so beautiful. Ours are all alike!" We had a good laugh at her innocent remark, but as I think back to all those years ago, I believe she was right. Those plates were beautiful.
Mom worked for the local council on aging as a housekeeper. She did many of the litlle things that allowed elderly people to stay in their own homes. Most of her clients got Meals on Wheels, a service in the 1970s. They received a hot lunch and a cold snack to have later in the evening. This is really not very much food. Every evening Mom would make to-go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil, and then deliver then to the people who she knew didn't get enough to eat.
This was about ten years before microwave ovens became common so it was important that the food be on a plate that could be reheated in a regular oven. Instead of a cold sandwich and macaroni salad, Mom's clients dined on Beef Manhattans, pan-fried chicken or meatloaf, along with veggies and a piece of pie or cake. Mom and Dad did this even after Mom left her job, and Mom continued after Dad's death until all her former clients had either passed away or moved out.
When I was cleaning out Mom's house after her death, I kept one as a souvenir(纪念品). That plate is a sweet reminder of the lessons of generosity and caring for one's neighbor that were modeled for me by my parents.
1. Why did the author think those plates beautiful
A. They were not all alike.
B. They were little Jessica’s pride.
C. They were collected from different places.
D. They were symbols of the parents' kindness.
2. What did the author's mother do to earn a living in the 1970s
A. Be a housewife.
B. Run Meals on Wheels.
C. Deliver food to houses.
D. Do housework for the old.
3. Why did the author's mother make to-go meals
A. It was her job.
B. She was good at cooking.
C. She wanted to help beyond her duty.
D. Her family didn't have enough to eat.
4. What is the best title for the text
A. Plates of Sympathy
B. A Precious Souvenir
C. Services for the Senior
D. A Kind-hearted Mother
D
Jane Austen ever popular
Last summer, the UK honored one of its favorite writers, Jane Austen (1775 - 1817), by making her the face of the new 10 note. In the 200 years since her death, Austen's fame has increased to global fame.
Yet Austen's works are so very English that it's rather strange she should be so popular all over the world. Her novels are so of her time that it's remarkable that she's still appreciated in this very different age. Her most famous works — including Pride and Prejudice(《傲慢与偏见》) the one for which she is most known — are set in the world of the English gentry (上流社会人士) in the early 19th century.
Most of her fiction is about young women of that time. Women of the gentry could not work, so their chances of happiness or even basic living depended upon finding a husband. This is a very serious subject, of course, but the joy of Austen’s stories is her ability to make wonderful, but also touching comedy out of something so serious.
Take Pride and Prejudice as an example. The main plot of the novel is driven by the love-hate relationship between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, a wealthy man. At first, they don't get on. Elizabeth finds Darcy too proud; she feels he thinks he is better than everyone else. She thinks that he looks down upon her family in particular. Darcy, while admiring Elizabeth, believes that she has taken unfairly to him. The pleasure of the novel is reading how these difficulties are overcome and how the comical and unexpected ending is achieved.
If we think about this story, it's obvious why Jane Austen is still popular more than 200 years after her death, and why readers can still have the same feelings with characters from the long dead world of the 19th century English gentry. Although there have been many changes since that time, it's still the greatest challenge in life for men and women to find the partner of their dreams.
1.It can be concluded from Paragraph 2 that the author ________.
A.believes Jane Austen's works are ahead of her time
B.thinks that everyone should read Jane Austen's works
C.has doubts about Jane Austen's popularity all over the world
D.is surprised that Jane Austen's works are still so popular
2.According to the text, Pride and Prejudice __________.
A.has a sad and unexpected ending
B.deals with a serious social issue in a lighthearted way
C.centers on poor people's struggles in the early 19th century
D.tells readers that everyone can succeed through hard work
3.We can learn from the text that Jane Austen remains popular today because _________.
A.readers enjoy reading love stories about wealthy people
B.readers are attracted by the way people deal with difficulties in the stories
C.readers can always find something new from her novels
D.her works deal with problems many of today's readers still face
4.The text is mainly written to ________.
A.tell us why Jane Austen is chosen to be on the new 10 note
B.introduce the story of Pride and Prejudice
C.explain why Jane Austen is still popular today
D.introduce Jane Austen's creative writing style

This app could checkmate dating game
George Church, a leading professor of genetics at Harvard University, is planning to create a dating app that can match users based on their genetic agreement.
①_____ Two people considering going on a date take out their smartphones first and check each other's genetic table to see whether there are any undesirable genes that cannot be determined from outward appearance. Genetic deficiencies(基因缺陷) that might lead to diseases in offspring will be screened out first. Heart disease No. Immune deficiency No. Hemophilia No.
②_____ Eye color, height preference, curly or straight hair. In the end, only those with the genes that promise the users a perfect child will date.
It sounds terrible. If the app becomes a reality, it could split people into different camps based on the genes they carry.
Some might argue that even now people are not wholly equal to each other—there are the rich and the poor to begin with. ③_____ Genes, on the other hand, are fixed, with no hope of changing at least in the near future.
Church didn't have this divisive goal in mind. In an interview, he said he hopes to let people know the genetic deficiencies in their mating partners so as to minimize the chances of giving birth to children with diseases. ④_____
The problem is not so much with genetic technology, which can help people find possible diseases before birth, and possibly even cure them through gene editing. But it would be a mistake to let everybody know of each other’s genetic information and make choices on that basis.
⑤_____ Gene sequencing(基因排序) is becoming increasingly popular with many people choosing to know their genes better. It is reaching a stage when it becomes urgent for the law to protect such information and avoid possible leaks.
A. He will make it.
B. This is how it works.
C. That in turn calls for legislation(法律,法规).
D. The app will be popular with different people.
E. Then comes the turn of harmless appearance characteristics.
F. But he will not be able to stop the above-mentioned possibility.
G. However, one can always struggle to improve one's quality of life.

When Lisa was a little girl, she learned an important lesson from her father. Her father told her that when she faced a problem, she should try another solution instead of giving up. In the following years, Lisa always remembers her father's words.
When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer after growing up. It was always her dream. But it was not an easy road.
After leaving college, Lisa went to Paris with her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn't give up. One day, at a friend's party, she was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted(针织的)sweater. It wasn't a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches (编织法). Lisa asked that lady if she knitted it herself after talking with her for a while. The lady said it was the work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs. And then Lisa had an even braver idea. "Why not own a fashion store of my own That way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes," she thought. So she decided to begin with that kind of sweater.
Later Lisa's friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked Madam Dean to knit the sweater for her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. The following day after Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.
Lisa was very nervous but she was lucky. Not long after the party began, her sweater drew the attention of a store owner from New York. She wanted to order forty such sweaters in two weeks. Lisa was really happy and accepted the order.

根据第四段中she thought a nearby street cat was the culprit可知,Powell认为肇事者是流浪猫。
C
答案:1.D; 2.D; 3.C; 4.A
Mom work for the local council on......1970s,妈妈在当地老龄问题委员会做管家,她做了很多让老年人住在自己家里的小事,她的大多数客户都是在20世纪70年代提供的一项服务。
Every evening Mom make to-go......eat,每天晚上妈妈都会在这些用铝箔覆盖的不匹配的盘子里做顿饭,然后把它们送到那些吃不饱的她认识的人那里,可知作者的母亲要做好饭带出去给吃不饱的家人,故选C
故选A。
D
根据"it's rather strange"以及"Her novels are so of her time that it's remarkable that she's still appreciated in this very different age"可知,作者认为Jane Austen的作品是非常英式的,具有她那个时代的特点,但是很奇怪在这个完全不同的年代她的作品依旧能在全世界继续流行,故从第二段得出的结论是作者很惊讶Jane Austen的作品仍然流行,故选D。
This is a very serious subject... comedy out of something so serious"以及第四段中的"The pleasure of the novel is... how the comical and unexpected ending is achieved"可知,作者认为《傲慢与偏见》以轻松的形式来处理严肃的社会问题,因此选B。
Although there have been many changes since that time, it's still the greatest challenge in life for men and women to find the partner of their dreams"可知,Jane Austen的作品至今仍然流行的原因是尽管时代变了,但是寻求合适的伴侣仍然是人们生活中面临的最大挑战,而这个问题也是Jane Austen的作品探讨的问题。因此选D。

It was early, and the sound the birds made traveled through our neighborhood."

答案:① reliable② popularity③ attracting④ an⑤ who ⑥ However⑦ on⑧ constantly⑨ added⑩ has appeared

Dear Jack,
Knowing that you are interested in Chinese classics, I am more than excited because I am fairly a classical literature lover myself.
I recommend a well-known Chinese book titled Journey to the West to you. The book was written by Wu Cheng'en in the 16th century during Ming Dynasty, which tells a story about Priest Tang and his three animal followers with human characteristics. Seemingly stubborn, weak and incompetent, Priest Tang played an important role in keeping the team united and bringing out people's kindness and humanity. I will send this book to you by airmail tomorrow, so please pay attention to your package.
I am looking forward to your view of this book.
Yours,
Li Hua
