Beverly Cleary has sold 85 million copies of 41 books and—if those numbers weren't impressive enough—she turned 100 on Tuesday. Though the world was a very different place when Cleary was a child, she has always maintained that kids pretty much stay the same—which explains the ongoing popularity of her beloved characters, like Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins and Ralph S. Mouse.
Cleary was in her early 30s and working a part-time job in a bookstore when she sat down at a typewriter to see if just maybe she could write a book for kids. She had worked as a librarian before World War II, and she wished she'd had books for young readers about children's living everyday lives.
"I think children want to read about normal, everyday kids," she told NPR in 1999. "That's what I wanted to read about when I was growing up. I wanted to read about the sort of boys and girls that I knew in my neighborhood and in my school. I think children like to find themselves in books."
Her first book, Henry Huggins, came out in 1950. Henry had a friend named Beezus, and Beezus had a mischievous (爱恶作剧的) but lovable little sister named Ramona. Over the next five decades, Cleary took Ramona all the way from the nursery school (幼儿园) to the fourth grade. Cleary says when she was writing Ramona, she took inspiration from a little girl who lived in the house behind hers as a child.
Her books have hooked generations of children, including a young Jeff Kinney, who grew up to become the author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
"I must have been about 8 or 9 years old when I first read Beverly Cleary's works," Kinney recalls. "The book that really grabbed me was Ramona Quimby, Age 8. She looked feral. I needed to get to know this character."
"Most kids have parents, teachers, bullies(恃强凌弱者)—we all experience these things," Kinney says. "And Beverly Cleary tapped into those. Her works are still as relevant today as when they first came out."
Now, generations of children have been fortunate enough to enjoy her stories of Klickitat Street.
1.What does the underlined word "hooked" in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Described. B. Praised. C. Surprised. D. Attracted.
2.What can we infer about Beverly Cleary's works
A. They are about adults' ordinary lives.
B. They interest and delight young readers.
C. They receive much criticism from other writers.
D. They are based on Cleary's childhood experiences.
3.What gave Cleary inspiration for Ramona's stories
A. A neighborhood girl.
B. Her work as a librarian.
C. Her fourth-grade daughter.
D. Her working experience in a bookstore.
4.Which of the following can best describe Beverly Cleary
A. Brave and patient.
B. Generous and honest.
C. Productive and influential.

An unpleasant smell floated into my nose as the bowl of fried stinky tofu(臭豆腐) settled onto my grandmother's dinner table. I immediately sat back. The smell ruined my appetite, and I pushed the dish away.
"Just give it a try!" my grandmother said. Holding my breath, I unwillingly took a bite. To my surprise, the tofu beneath the fried skin was warm, soft, and mouth-watering. Since then, whenever I visited my grandmother's house, I would rush to the kitchen for the stinky tofu with excitement, and it became my favorite dish.
Along with the stinky tofu, I would meet Uncle Chan on every visit, who was an unfriendly man with Down syndrome(唐氏综合征) in my eyes. Whenever he came into my view, I would run away in fear.
However, one day, my view about my uncle changed. I was just getting out of bed when I heard soft steps approaching. It was my uncle. My muscles froze. He slowly sat next to me and touched my face gently, as a mother would stroke(轻抚) a baby. A wide smile emerged from his blank expression. How beautiful his smile was! I could not help but smile back. My fear disappeared gradually, and my muscles relaxed. For the first time, I could see kindness and warmth in his eyes.
My uncle very much resembles stinky tofu which made me keep my distance at first and feel the warm inside later. Yet, I learned that he has a kind nature deep inside.
Some people tend to look down upon disabled people and regard them as unfit for a regular life. As I was unable to see through the surface of the tofu, these people are unable to see through the surface of the disabled and judge them at a single glance.
The outside and the inside of the stinky tofu exist as two extremely different worlds. Perhaps that is what makes it such a tasty dish. What's more, it offers a valuable lesson: never judge people at first glance, for true beauty comes from the inside.
1. Why did stinky tofu become the author's favorite dish
A. Because it was related to family tradition.
B. Because it tasted much better than it smelled.
C. Because Grandma encouraged him to try it.
D. Because the author had a preference for stinky food.
2. What caused the change of the author's attitude towards Uncle Chan
A. Chan's help in waking up the author.
B. Chan's friendliness to the author.
C. Chan's love for the little baby.
D. Chan's encouraging words.
3. Why did the author make a comparison between stinky tofu and his uncle
A. To highlight the inner beauty of Uncle Chan.
B. To analyze the family relationship.
C. To describe a childhood memory.
D. To introduce a traditional Chinese dish.
4. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage
A. We shouldn't judge people by appearance.
B. A person's taste changes over time.
C. Blood is thicker than water.
D. You are what you eat.
D
Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, chances are that we'll use an app to smooth our skin, make our eyes look bigger, and lips fuller. With a couple of taps on our mobile phone, we can get a quick fix and present the "best" version of ourselves to the world. However, the problem is, when we simply edit our imperfections away,we're also changing the way we look at ourselves.
Last month, researchers published the article Selfies—Living in the Era of Filtered(过滤的) Photographs. The article analysed photo editing apps' bad influences on people's self-respect and their possibility to cause appearance anxieties. The researchers also warned that such apps make it difficult to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. "These apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty," the article reads.
In the past, people may have compared their looks to those of famous people. But for today's young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. "From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look," British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance.
"Now you've got this daily comparison of your real self to this fake self that you present on social media," Renee Engeln, a professor of psychology, told the HuffPost website. Engeln further pointed out that when people spend too much time making such comparisons, they may become "beauty sick" and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like. "Because between you and the world is a mirror. It's a mirror that travels with you everywhere. You can't seem to put it down," she told The Washington Post. So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, "Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos " Instead, we should think, "I feel good; I have my health."
1.Before uploading a photo to social media, we will probably _________.
A.have an operating to make our eyes look bigger
B.use some cream to smooth our skin
C.use an app to fix our photo
D.edit our perfections away
2.What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A.In many ways, photo editing apps are beneficial to people.
B.Photo editing apps are likely to cause people's anxieties about their appearance.
C.Photo editing apps can make people more beautiful.
D.Photo editing apps help people judge realistic beauty.
3.When it comes to appearance, why do many young people suffer an identity trouble
A.Because they compare their looks to those of famous people.
B.Because beauty standards are set by social media.
C.Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their own likes and dislikes.
D.Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their appearance.
4.According to Engeln, what should we do
A.We should feel good about what we actually look like.
B.We should spend more time making comparison of our real self to fake self.
C.We should take a mirror with us everywhere.
D.We should try to look as good as ourselves in the filtered photos.

A few years ago I worked in an international company that sold computer devices. I had to travel a lot over the country as a part of my work. I remember that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to make more money.
On one of my trips, I came to the airport to take a bus to downtown, as usual. It was the same routine: get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back... That day, for some reasons, I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I came across a beautiful garden I had never seen before. I waited there, enjoying the scenery. Finally, the bus came.
Usually I always took the seat behind the driver. That day I sat down somewhere in the middle. A boy was seated next to me, carrying a lot of suitcases. Suddenly, he turned to me and gave me one of the sincerest smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. Warmly, he said, "Hi, the perfect day in the perfect place, huh "
I remember thinking to myself----this must be one of those typical people who are young and naive and just think everything is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride But out of politeness, I replied, "Perfect! Did your parents pay for you to have some vacations on, the beach " "No, I'm not here for vacation, and I don't have parents," He shook his head. "I'm here because I want to achieve my biggest dream. I'm on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago."
