Having struggled with financial difficulties for six months and failing to find a way out, I had to close my
technology writing business. Fortunately, I found a new job as a salesperson and soon got a client. At the time, I
wondered if it was too good to be true.
By the second month, something didn’t seem right, and I developed a bad feeling about the client and the
work. When the third month’s check didn’t arrive on time, I sent the client an e-mail to find out what was going
on. But there was no reply. Then I sent another e-mail, and another. The check never arrived, and I never heard
from the client again. With no hope in sight, I hit rock bottom. Panic replaced cautious optimism along with my
last self-confidence.
I hid myself from friends and locked myself in my room. One night, the phone rang. The call was from Eric,
a friend of mine from high school. When he was in high school, he told me many times about his parents’ divorce
and his loss of confidence in the college entrance examination. During the difficult time, I gave him much comfort
and encouragement. Later, he went to college and was always grateful for what I had done.
After the greetings, I told my problems and challenges, hoping my friend would say something comforting.
What I didn’t expect was a string of sharp words. “What is wrong with you You can do anything you want to
do,” he said. “You are a writer, so start writing. Write for magazine.” “Write for magazine Are you out of your
mind I don’t know the first thing about writing for magazine, let alone write things that anyone would want to
read. And I have to know where I can send an application form-to what magazine and to what editor,” I shouted at
him.

【答案】参考范文
Surprisingly, I felt a little better after the shouting. After a short silence, Eric replied in a firm voice. “I
always remember what you said when I was in trouble. You said ‘No one can get you out of trouble but
yourself. ’ ” Hearing that, I was speechless and struck by the fact that it was easier to convince others than to
convince myself. Inspired by Eric’s words, I started searching for magazines the next day and finally found one
that accepted online contributions with various topics. Then I began to prepare my application form.
On finishing the application form I sent it to the editor. Luckily, two days later I received a positive response
and an invitation to write. At first, I only wrote articles I was expert in. Gradually, I began trying new types. One
day, much to my amazement, one of my articles appeared on the first page of the magazine! Since then, I have
been on my way to becoming an excellent writer. That definitely should be credited to Eric. It was he who
enlightened me and helped me regain confidence to face challenges in my life.

Flora and her dad were going to move to a new house. Friday, a truck would come for the furniture. Then the
next week, workers would dig up the yard. Where Flora and Papi had grown flowers, the workers would put in a
parking lot.
“Our poor flowers,” Flora sighed to herself, looking at the bright purple blooms and soft and green weed
coming out of the soil. She sat outside, selling things she didn’t want to take to the new house. Beside her hung a
sign that said “Yard Sale”. Her yard sale was the first one of the year on Apple Street, and several of her
neighbors had come over to have a look.
Papi came out. He held a dish piled high with nuts. “Here’s a snack for everyone,” he said. Flora’s dad loved
sharing things. Most of all he loved sharing jokes. He smiled when he saw Flora’s sign and winked (眨眼) at the
customers gathered around.
“Yard sale What are you selling yards of Or meters of ” he asked. “Ribbons Carpet Cloth Where’s your
ruler ”
“Not that kind of yard,” joked Mrs. Ciro. “It must be this nice grassy yard we’re standing on that’s for sale.”
“How much for the weed by your sign ” asked Mr. Johnson, joking.
Flora gave no response. She didn’t think their jokes were funny. She felt extremely in low spirits at the
thought that the lovely yard was already sold, and soon their poor flowers and weed would be ruined.” Deader
than a doorknob,’ Papi’s papi would say”, she thought to herself bitterly, “What’s worse, the new house doesn’t
have any flowers at all.”
With a sigh, Flora dug her heels deep into the grass. But when she felt the soft earth move under her heels,
she knew what she could do.
She whispered her clever plan to Papi. He nodded, smiling, and sat down in her seat instead.

【答案】Flora fetched old flowerpots and found a trowel to dig with. She walked to the yard, knelt down, and
found the right place to shovel. Carefully she dug up chunks of earth that had flowers growing out of them. Then,
she gently packed each chunk and more soil in a pot, deciding to carry two inside. They would come along to the
new house. The others she lined up near her sign. All the work finished, she came back. “Thanks, Papi,” Flora
said with smile, taking her seat again.
Now she was ready for selling the yard and joking with customers. Mr. Johnson was picking some toys from
the stand. Mrs. Ciro picked several story books. And the two asked jokingly again, “But how much for the yard ”
This time, Flora smiled. Her smile was just like Papi’s. “Zero cents!” she said, “Pick any pot of yard you like!”
Hearing this, all the neighbors burst into laughter. “Now our yard can survive,” Flora thought to herself
delightedly, “both in my new house and on Apple Street” she added.

I’d just returned from a beautiful autumn early morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in
my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn’t have them, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken. I
would surely spot them in plain sight.
My little dog ran in circles with excitement for repeating of our just-finished outing. I spent an hour looking,
brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the
consequences of losing them, so I continued retrace (重走) our steps, but without luck.
At home again, I pulled the spare key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch in
exhaustion. I began to make a list of the lost keys. The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. The mail
key was a big deal because getting a new one would take a lot of time. I also had a spare car key at home, but it
was sensitive. But the key fob (小饰物) attached to the keys would be expensive to replace. It was an iron heart
made by my grandfather which was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever
made my tears come to my eyes. I blamed myself for losing the keys and not being more careful. In my mind, I
retraced my steps again and again trying to recall where it might be but finally gave up.
That night, it turned colder and we had a snowstorm. I enjoyed a comfort food dinner, played soft music, and
settled into a peaceful evening. It had been peaceful until I heard my car alarm coming from the garage. I rushed
to the car with the spare key and opened it, and then switched the key until the alarm stopped. I felt red-faced as I
imagined my next door neighbors being annoyed. I went back in the house but it started again. I turned it off, went
back inside, but the alarm blasted (轰鸣) again. I repeated the process.

【答案】Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was my doorbell. Assuming that it was my annoyed
neighbor, I couldn’t help feeling embarrassed and guilty. Hesitating for a second, I headed to the door and opened
it slowly. However, I was greeted with a smiling face, whose owner held out her gloved hand with my keys
hanging from her pointer finger. For an instant, I was flooded with so much joy that I could not utter a single
word. I wanted to hug her to express my deepest gratitude, but in a COVID world, all I could do was say, “Oh, my
goddess! Thank you!”
She told me that by keeping pressing the alarm button of the car key, she found my home. I took the keys in my
grateful hands. Before she waved goodbye, she said, “It’s not a big deal. You would have done the same thing! ” I
don’t think I would have done the same thing! Pressing the alarm until I heard a car alarm would not have
occurred to me. I was astonished by her clever kindness and wished I could have hugged her. Instead, I hugged
the keys.

Flying now has become a necessary routine these days, what once seemed to be a marvel that changed how
we travel and what distances we can cover in a matter of hours. Our family shared this mood when we were
boarding our flight early Thursday morning.
My mother, elder brother and I planned to fly to Hawaii and spent a few sunny days there. We took our seats
in rear emergency isle of the Airbus A321 plane, while people on board were busy packing their belongings and
getting ready for the flight. Soon after taking off, there was a troubling sound in the plane. People in the front
seats started screaming and someone shouted “birds! birds!”. The plane began rocking from side to side in an
unusual pattern. I saw one of the flight attendants terrified, while restrained, the expression on face who sat in the
same emergency isle as we did. My mother grabbed my hand and my brother became stiff and unresponsive. It
was unusual to see so many people being scared and confused at once, everybody looking around in search of
what might be going on. A moment later I felt a strong smell of something burning, and apparently somebody
even started to cough. People at the front rows screamed that they see fire coming out of the left engine.
Suddenly, the chaos in the cabin was interrupted by the captain informing the passengers that a flock of birds
collided with the plane during the take-off. Apparently, the damage was severe and the plane would not be able to
turn around and land at the airport. My mother grabbed my hand and reached for brother’s hand as well. A deep
sense of fear and realization of a potential disaster descended on everyone on board. Flight attendants rushed to
check if everyone was still buckled up and in a proper position.

【答案】参考答案
The captain addressed us once again telling that an emergency landing will be in a few minutes and
that they will try to land on the field. We were asked to protect the head. The attendants shouted “brace! brace!
brace!” as the plane flew lower and lower over the green carpets of picturesque fields. A terrible force pushed all
of us up front, ripping the air out of lungs while seat belts bit hardly. The plane trembled and rocked as dashed
through the field. And there was a moment of silence when the plane finally came to a full stop. Immediately the
captain ordered to evacuate the plane. Once we slid down the evacuation slide we found ourselves amid the corn
filed. Flight attendants rushed us away from the plane. The captain and the first pilot were the last to leave the
board.
Luckily, all of us were safe. Even now it is hard to describe the feelings we all shared that moment.
Everybody was hugging and comforting each other, my mother helped a stranger with a small child, while my
brother and I checked if we can do something for elderly people. Except sirens sounded again, they reminded us
of what happened in less than 20 minutes of our flight. Undoubtedly, it was a combination of luck and
professionalism of the pilots that landed the plane safely and made it possible for this story to be one with a happy
ending.

篇完整的短文。
At Christmas 2020, a set of 4-year-old twins living in Kansas wrote letters to Santa, tied them to red
balloons, and let them go. Although their mother, Leticia Flores-Gonzalez, knew it was something like a message
in a bottle, she encouraged her daughters to let their balloons fly in the air in the hope that they would reach Santa.
It was a windy day, and she just thought they were going to get lost, or get caught up in a tree. And, while
one of the balloons did get lost, the other one reached its destination. It flew all the way to Louisiana, where Alvin
Bamburg found it. The man had no idea what the balloon could be bringing with it, but when he read the letter, he
decided that he just had to do something.
Just like any Santa’s helper would do, he prepared to deliver the presents to the sweet girls. But, in order to
do so, he had to find them. He went online and, after some serious research, he got in touch with’ the family. After
contacting the mother, he reached out to the family. Together with his friends, he collected all the presents that the
girls had asked for.
Alvin managed to package most of them and send them to the family. Although the girls were delighted to
get their precious presents, one was missing. The girls had also asked for a puppy, but there was no puppy in the
package they received.
This was Alvin’s last and biggest surprise. He got a puppy and drove all the way to the girls’ home, about
600 miles away, to deliver the last but greatest gift ever.
When the girls saw the man arriving with a dog in his arms, they couldn’t hide their excitement. They were
so grateful to Santa’s helper Alvin for all the gifts he had brought to them.

【答案】“We are very blessed,” the mother said. She was so grateful that she couldn’t hold back her tears. She
was grateful not only because Alvin Bamburg took the great trouble to fulfill her daughters’ wishes, but also felt
so lucky that he indeed planted warm seeds in her daughters’ hearts. The kindness took root in the girls, soul.
What they experienced in their childhood would make them remember forever. She believed that the world would
be colorful in her daughters’ eyes.
Alvin Bamburg was also excited at seeing the girls’ happiness. As the man explained, delivering the gifts to
the girls not only made them happy, but also him. “If you can make just one person smile, not only will it help
them, but it will make you feel much better.” He was happy he could be a Santa Claus, and make the girls believe
in what they believe. He hold the belief that, in fact, anyone can be Santa’s helper. They only need to have a big
heart and be willing to make others happy.
