March 16th, 6 p.m. Today is our last day in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. Tomorrow Max and I are going to Coroico, a town about 60 kilometers from here. We’re taking a bus along the North Yungas Road, also known as “Death Road”. It goes along steep hillsides and cliffs. People call it the most dangerous road in the world! There are hundreds of accidents on it every year. I will find more information about the road and update the blog.
March 17th, 9 a.m. I’ve found out more about the North Yungas Road. It’s only about 3 meters wide, and in some parts there’s a drop of at least 600 meters. That’s more than half a kilometer! There’s no barrier (护栏) along the side of the road. And there’s often rain or fog, which makes it even more dangerous.
I found out another thing. Here in Bolivia, they drive on the right side of the road. But on the North Yungas Road, they drive on the left. Why Because this means that the driver on the dangerous side of the road can see the edge (边缘) of the road more easily. The driver’s seat is on the left side of the bus, so the driver is close to the edge. Our bus leaves in one hour!
March 17th, 8 p.m. We got to Coroico safely. It was terrifying at times! But there was no rain or fog. Our driver told us the road is safer than it used to be, and he’s driven it many times before. He didn’t drive fast, and we never went too close to the edge. Thank you, Mr. Bus Driver!
1.Where could this text be from

B.Because the weather conditions often change and are sometimes bad.
C.Because there is no safety support on the roadside.
D.Because of the three reasons stated in the above choices.
3.How might the writer feel before and on the bus journey
A.Lonely and often sad. B.Happy and always safe.
C.Worried and sometimes afraid. D.Excited and usually relaxed.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Spanish government have announced that Chinese has become an official language of the UNWTO since Jan. 25.
That means the organization will use the Chinese language, increasing China’s soft power in global tourism and the cultural domain (方面). It will help China’s tourism growth, encouraging other countries to carry out its policies (政策). Tourist places in China will also welcome more visitors, encouraging more people globally to learn the Chinese language. China’s influence on the cultural and tourism domains will surely grow.
There are two main reasons for that. First, Chinese governments have been promoting Chinese culture for long. As far as in 2016, the Spring Festival was listed as a national cultural heritage (遗产) and given special protection and promotion. Now, there are many influential festival lists in the world and almost all of them list the Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival; many even list it at the top.
Second, the year-on-year growth in the number of Chinese tourists before 2020 has also played a part in promoting the Chinese language and culture. In 2019, the number of foreign visitors in China were more than 670 million. That means Chinese faces have become common at tourist places in the world.
Although the data for 2020 have not been published yet, the numbers are expected to have fallen because of the outbreak(爆发) of COVID-19. But with China’s great efforts in stopping the virus from spreading, the number of tourists might still be larger.
Chinese language has now become a world language in tourism. That has a lot to do with China’s improving economy and people’s rising income (收入). With China’s growth, it is hoped that its influence on other soft power domains will also grow.

My name is Jacqueline and I went abroad for the first time when I was 18. I travelled to the UK to study English, but I didn’t learn to speak well. The main reason was that I made friends with other French people, so I spent too much time speaking French. It’s important to make English friends and to spend a lot of time with your English host family. If they have young children, it’s even better. The children in my host family were great teachers.
Another reason was that I was worried about making mistakes when I spoke, so I didn’t say much. But you shouldn’t worry. English people are usually polite and helpful. You can’t learn to speak English if you don’t talk. You should leave your dictionary at home and say what you can.
To help your listening, try to understand the conversations of English people in shops and on buses. I heard some very interesting things! Listening isn’t very easy at the beginning but don’t give up!
Read the newspaper and watch the news on TV every day. All the students in my class did this, and it helped a lot. Of course, the cinema is a fun way to practice your English. And listening to songs is helpful, too—there are lots of good English bands(乐队).
Finally, don’t study too hard. Give yourself lots of time for fun, but try to have fun in the English way.

Doctors and nurses seem to strictly hold the idea that going to bed early is important for good health. I am wondering whether this is always true. What happens to those who are used to going to bed late and getting up late and have developed it as personal preference
As the saying goes, the early bird catches the worm. It means people who wake up early do many things. The popular saying “early to bed, early to rise” also encourages us to get into the habit of going to bed early and getting up early. These sayings may be true. Findings of a UK research tell us that people who go to bed before 11 p.m. may do better in life. They added that people who sleep and wake up early (early birds) have advantage over people who sleep and wake up late (night owls). They found differences in the brain function (功能) of early birds and night owls.
The scientists tested 38 people. The people answered questionnaires (问卷调查) about their sleep and when they felt tired. They were then put into an early bird or night owl group. All of the people had MRI brain scans (磁共振脑扫描成像) and DNA tests throughout the day. The early birds said that they felt less sleepy. They did the test quicker than the night owls. There were big differences between the two groups. The researchers said night owls have to get up early for school and work, they are always fighting against wanting to sleep late and their natural rhythm (节奏).
To sum up, people have their own preferences. However, if one goes to bed late but has to get up early to follow the strict timetable of a school or company, it could lead to their poor performance (表现) or even be bad for their health.

Malaria (疟疾) has been a deadly problem for humans since ancient times. Usually, people get malaria when the infected mosquito (被感染的蚊子) bites them. Countless people have died from it. Thankfully, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou found an effective drug called qinghaosu (青蒿素).
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Tu’s discovery. In 1969, Tu became the director of a national project to develop a drug against malaria. Her team went back to books about classical Chinese medicine. After reading more than 2,000 old remedies (药方), Tu and her team collected over 600 plants and listed almost 380 possible remedies for malaria.
One remedy, which is 1,600 years old, uses the sweet wormwood (青蒿) plant to treat malaria. Tu found it effective and tried to extract (提取) the qinghaosu from it in order to make drugs. The extraction failed at first, so Tu returned to the classical books again and finally found a way. She used a low-temperature method to extract the qinghaosu and succeeded in 1972.
After her team showed that qinghaosu could treat malaria in mice and monkeys. Tu and two of her colleagues (同事) volunteered to test the drug on themselves before testing on human patients. It turned out that qinghaosu was safe. All patients in the tests recovered. Gradually, qinghaosu became the first-line treatment for malaria recommended (推荐) by the World Health Organization (WHO), saving millions of lives around the world.
In 2015, when Tu was awarded with the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, she refused to take all of the credit (荣誉). Instead, she praised her colleagues and Chinese traditional medicine. She once proudly said, “Every scientist dreams of doing something that can help the world.” She made it.

In recent years, many Chinese parents think schooling is the only way for their children to succeed. It seems that they have not paid enough attention to teaching their children cultures and customs (风俗). In some countries such as the USA and Canada, as well as many countries in Europe, however, many parents just do this in quite a different way. They believe strongly that passing cultures and customs on to their children is important because these things can stay with children for the rest of their life. Now, questions arise:
●What do parents in these foreign countries do to help pass on cultures and customs
●How can the Chinese parents catch up to better educate their children
To begin with, it is a good idea to have meaningful toys because children often easily fall in love with their first toys, each of which has a story behind it. Then, a parent should also introduce a child to music. Music plays an important part between a child and language. What else do we think of besides music Dancing! Of course, there is nothing better than seeing a child enjoy dancing. At the same time teaching a child to cook and enjoy traditional food is also important in keeping cultures and customs alive.
In China, it is also necessary for parents to pass cultures and customs onto children. The most important thing for those who do not pay enough attention to it is to change their ideas, which will help them a lot to pass on cultures and customs. It is really helpful and useful to their children.

Three people were siting around a table in a restaurant in Brazil. How much do you think each of them tipped(给小费) The British asked. “It’s common to tip 10 percent, right ” The American woman cried. “Oh, I was planning to leave 20 percent!” And the Chinese asked. “What’s a tip ”
Although it is not a custom to tip in China, tipping is a big deal in Western countries. When travelling to countries like the US and Canada, it is common to tip about 10 to 15 percent of the bill.
Usually, people give tips to a waiter or waitress when they eat in a restaurant. The US tops the list of the biggest restaurant tips, with waiters and waitresses expecting to get 10 to 25 percent of the total bill.
So if you order $ 100(about 662 yuan) worth of food, you are expected to pay your waiter at least $15, making your total payment $ 115.
But why is this Many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US minimum wage(最低工资) and work for tips to make up for(弥补) that. According to the American travel website, some states pay their servers(服务员) only $2.13 per hour. It is not just for waiters, either. Hotel maids, hairdressers and taxi drivers also usually work for tips.
Besides the US, tipping is also popular in some Southeast Asian countries, such as Indonesia and Thailand. However, in Japan there is a no-tipping culture and you may actually offend the waiter if you try to give him money.

These days, teenagers are heavily influenced by the media. Many of them have watched thousands of hours of TV. That’s more time than they spend with teachers at school. And we haven’t yet considered the hours that they spend using the Internet and reading newspapers.
However, several studies have shown a serious problem: today’s teenagers lack media literary (媒体素养). In other words, they have difficulty critically (批判性地) thinking about the information that they see. A study that was done on middle school students showed that more than 80% of them couldn’t tell the differences between real stories and ads that looked like news.
Stanford Professor Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects. He tries to help his students learn media literary. The professor gave an example that showed why media literary was important. In the example, two news stations reported a snowstorm, mostly about the trouble that it had caused. The other stations focused on (聚焦于) those kids playing happily in the snow, painting a cheerful (欢快的) picture. It was the same snow, but they were so different. “For news, they just report what is happening and what it has brought. Not about feelings or opinions, just about facts,” said John. “but for others, they may just focus on feelings or opinions. In fact, both are OK. They are just different sides of one thing. Teenagers have to know this.”
Some experts think the school is the best place to teach media literacy. Others believe that everyone—from parents to teachers to reporters—should help teenagers learn the skills.
As for the best time to start learning literacy, many experts suggest the age of 12. But some basic ideas can be taught even earlier. “It’s never too early to start learning media literacy,” John said.

A.it is not right to describe those kids playing happily in a snowstorm
B.teenagers should know that there are different sides to the same thing

D.news reports are usually more serious and we can always believe it
