You’ve probably heard many times how exercise is good for you. But do you know that there are two kinds of exercise
Aerobic (有氧的) exercise
Like other muscles (肌肉), the heart enjoys a good workout (锻炼). You can provide it with one in the form of aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise is any kind of exercise that gets the heart working better. When you often give your heart this kind of workout, it will get stronger and better.
If you play team sports, you’re probably meeting 60 minutes or more of physical activity on practice days. Some team sports that give you a great aerobic workout are basketball, soccer, and football. But if you don’t play team sports, don’t worry—there are lots of ways to get aerobic exercise on your own or with friends. These include biking, running, swimming, skating, and walking quickly. In fact, these kinds of exercise that you do on your own are easier to go on when you leave high school.
Strength (力量) training
The heart isn’t the only muscle that can become better because of exercise. Most of the other muscles in your body enjoy exercise too. When you use your muscles and they become stronger, you can be active for longer periods of time without getting worn out.
Strong muscles help protect you when you exercise by helping to prevent injuries (伤害). Muscles also burn more energy than fat when a person is at rest, so building up your muscles will help you burn more calories (卡路里) and keep a healthy weight.

A man who was climbing a mountain thought he was alone. But suddenly, he was hit by a falling rock and then, a woman climber fell from above, landing right on him. They were both badly injured. His leg was broken. He tried to stand but couldn’t. The woman’s arm was broken and couldn’t climb. What were they going to do
It was very cold and night was coming. They both knew they wouldn’t live through the night if they didn’t go down the mountain before darkness came.
The woman had an idea. “Look,” she said, “I have two good legs, and you have two good arms. Together, that makes one healthy body.”
They tied themselves together so that he was on her back. Slowly, they climbed down, little by little. Every step was difficult. They had to stop every minute or so, but the man was counting on (指望) the woman’s strong legs and the woman was counting on the strength (力量) in the man’s arms to keep them from falling.
When they finally reached the foot of the mountain hours later, they were found and sent to the hospital by the local people. In the end, they were fine.
They both learned a good lesson that day. A good team isn’t made up of people who can all do the same thing. It must be made up of people who can provide many different skills. By using their individual strengths, they went down the mountain safely.

The Cornell Notes system (康奈尔笔记系统) appeared during the 1940s. It can help students a lot. The system has the following steps.
Divide your paper into three parts. Use a standard size notebook paper. Measure (测量) 2.5 inches from the left side of the page. Draw a vertical (垂直的) line down the page to about 2 inches from the lowest part of the page. This is the cue (提示) part of your notes and you can write key words or phrases in this part.
Then draw a horizontal (水平的) line at the 2- inch mark from the lowest part of the page to the end of the right side of the page. This space is your conclusion (结论) area. You will use it to write down the most important parts. The rest area, which is 6 inches wide, is where you will take notes in class.
Take notes in the note-taking area. You should take all your notes in the right part of this paper and try to use abbreviations (省略)—You don’t need to write down the whole words or phrases. “I just write the first letter of each word” a user once told me.
Review your notes during 24 hours. After each class, read through your notes and make them clearer if necessary. Make your notes shorter by writing the top-level main ideas down in the conclusion area. You will have to reread the lesson’s ideas, think them over, and put them in your own words if you can. Cover up the right-hand part of your notes and repeat the main idea and thoughts from memory.

I like to sit quietly near the hummingbird (蜂鸟) feeder and take pictures of the birds. One day, I watched them as they left the feeder to see where they would go.
Following the birds wasn’t easy because hummingbirds move so quickly. I discovered that they were going to perch (栖息) on small branches (树枝). One male hummingbird called Buzz would sit on the same perch (栖木) almost every time. Wondering what Buzz was doing, I slowly walked closer to his perch.
I moved just a few feet at a time and waited several minutes. Soon I was close enough to take good pictures, and I began to watch what he did. Buzz usually sat where he could see the feeder. Anytime he saw another hummingbird coming to be fed, he left the perch and would drive the other birds to go away. Buzz didn’t want to share with anybody!
The bird seemed to prefer different perches for different times of the day. In the mornings and evenings, he sat close to the feeder. In the middle of the day, he sat farther away and even disappeared for short periods at noon. During these times, other hummingbirds flew in to be fed without being chased away.
When Buzz was near the feeder, he always perched at exactly the same place. I set up more branches so he could sit even closer to the feeder. He had always chosen dead branches with no leaves on them, so that was why I used to get him closer. It worked! Now every morning and every evening Buzz sits within two or three feet of his feeder and guards his food.

In September 2020, Lindt opened its new chocolate museum called Lindt Home of Chocolate. It happens to be the largest chocolate museum in the world—near Zurich, Switzerland. The museum’s nearly 30-foot-tall chocolate fountain (喷泉) is attractive. It is the world’s highest free-standing chocolate fountain.
According to Time Out, about 1,500 liters (升) of chocolate runs to cover a big Lindor ball. The fountain is the centerpiece (中心装饰) of the Lindt Home of Chocolate. Handwritten Chinese characters (汉字) can be beautiful. I still remember looking at Chinese and not understanding anything it said and yet feeling a strong attraction. In fact, some foreign students start learning Chinese because of the characters. After having studied Chinese for a while, I realized that handwriting in Chinese took a very long time to learn.
Living as we do in a digital era (数字时代) with smartphones and computers, most students sooner or later ask themselves this question: Is it really necessary to learn how to write by hand in Chinese When using smartphones or computers, we can use phonetic input (语音输入) systems, which choose the characters we want for us as long as we can remember how they are pronounced. Since we enter different characters, we seldom need to be able to recognize the difference between individual (每个) characters in detail. The computer makes the right choices for us. Do we really need to write Chinese by hand at all
I think most people agree that you should learn to write at least some Chinese characters as a Chinese learner. But unless you don’t care about written language at all, you should learn the basics of handwriting. ________ You don’t need to be a calligraphy master (书法大师), but you do need basic handwriting skills to do this. Simply looking at things as usual is a bad way of learning.
I think learning the most common 500 Chinese characters or so is a good idea for all students. If you actually want to write by hand, enlarge that to 1,000. Then learn to hand-write characters outside of the 1,000 most common on a need-to-know basis.

D.You’d better be able to write all the Chinese characters.
62.What would be the best title for the passage
A.Learning to Write Chinese Characters B.More than a Digital Era
C.Keeping a Good Learning Habit D.Understanding Chinese Characters Better

Kids like to spend money. It was reported that American teens between 15 and 17 had over $2,000 a year to spend. The most common ways kids spend their money are by hanging out with friends and buying toys. While some teens think about saving their money, about 21 percent say they don’t save any money at all.
In 90 percent of American homes, kids are expected to do some chores to get their allowance, such as walking dogs and cleaning the yards. The average (平均的) American child gets an allowance of $780 a year. Children have the right to deal with it themselves.
Parents need to talk to kids about money early. When is the best time The earlier the better, according to experts. Even pre school children can learn about money. For example, they can learn that you need money to buy things and you make money by working. They can learn that there is a difference between the things you want and the things you need.
The experts suggest between 6 and 10, children can learn to make choices and to compare prices, between 11 and 13, they can learn that they should save ten cents of every dollar they receive, and between 14 and 18, they should start to compare the cost of different colleges.
Warren Buffet is one of the most famous billionaires in the world. He said that how successful the child will be later in life may depend on the age at which parents teach their kids good financial (经济的) habits. Buffet taught his children the value of learning from experience. He allowed them to succeed and fail on their own. He didn’t help them financially if they got in any trouble. Popular movies act like a mirror in society. They reflect back at people’s dreams as well as their fears in heart. Films that are about space travel and creatures (生物) from outer space were popular in the 1950s, a period when human was planning the first space flights.
Disaster (灾难) movies really took off after the introduction of special influences. For example, Airport (1970) was filmed when air travel was becoming popular. Although air travel was safe, people were still afraid of flying, and Airport made use of people’s worries about crashes (撞机).
Today, many people believe climate change is the most serious problem to our existence (存在) on the earth. So it isn’t surprising that there are plenty of films about weather events like rainstorms, or changes to the climate that would make the world impossible for people to live in. The Day after Tomorrow (2004) is a classic story about a future world in which climate has become so serious that our present way of life is no longer possible.
Traditional disaster movies show people’s worries about things out of their control, but climate disaster films are different because we would actually control climate change if we wanted to.
It’s clear that disaster movies are made mainly for entertainment (娱乐). If they had no entertainment, people wouldn’t go and watch them. But perhaps movies like The Day after Tomorrow can also be helpful. It encourages us to pay attention to the problem of climate change and take it more seriously.

When Wang Haiyan was young, her favorite toys weren’t Barbie dolls. Instead, she started learning to make shadow puppets(皮影) from her father at 13. Now 43, Wang has spent 30 years practicing and spreading the art.
Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that uses puppets made from leather or paper, accompanied by music and singing. Invented during the Western Han Dynasty, it tells us about folk and historical stories, passing down culture and customs over thousands of years.
Shadow puppetry is all about creating the puppets and performing with them. Wang’s hometown of Hua county (now Huazhou district), Shaanxi, is known as the birthplace of the folk art.
Puppet-makers must follow 24 steps to make the puppets, including washing the leather, carving(雕刻), and painting, according to Wang. Carving is the most difficult part. “We have special carving skill—moving the leather under the knife,” Wang said. “You have to hold the knife still in your right hand and only move the leather in your left hand.” It took Wang three years to master this skill. She used a brick to strengthen her left hand while practicing. “It takes about 3,000 carves to make a shadow puppet. The complicated(复杂的) steps make it hard to hand down the folk art,” she said.
But Wang has found a way to do so. In 2016, she made shadow puppets based on the cartoon series Huyao Xiao Hongniang (《狐妖小红娘》) and gave a lively performance. She used colors like blue and purple that are seldom seen in shadow puppetry and added more sticks to the puppets to make the performance more vivid.

In the coming year, I will be more grateful for smaller things in life and stop taking the people I love for granted. My big goal is to spend more time with friends and family once we are safe and can go back to normal.
Long-distance travel is still off the table, I’ll take time to see our local area. Finding beautiful parks, going hiking, watching a movie and visiting small flower shops are some examples. I am sure there will be plenty of outdoor activities nearby.

Circle Time is so much fun! We are learning to count and recognize our colors and shapes. We sing lots of songs and especially we love the alphabet song. We look out the window and talk about the weather; sometimes we see the sun and on other days clouds or rain. Our teacher is so funny when she shows us animal books and pictures; she acts really silly and makes all kinds of crazy animal “sounds”. Then, we pretend and act really silly while we laugh and crawl around. I am beginning to notice these familiar objects around our house and town.
Learning Center Time is wonderful; we get to choose what we want to do. Sometimes we play in housekeeping, build with blocks or play with trucks and cars. We push around popcorn poppers and ride on riding toys. Other times, we gather the toy animals and look at all the books. There’s just so much fun to do so!
Group Time gets us moving. We dance to music, exercise, play with bean bags, throw balls, catch bubbles, run under the kites and lots of other fun activities. My teacher says when all of us play together, we are learning to take turns and play nicely; we just think it is fun to play with our friends.

One of the world’s biggest sources of pollution is in the walls of your home-bricks(砖). According to the United Nations Environment Program, nearly 40 percent of human-made carbon emissions(碳排放) come from building materials. What if nature could help us make bricks in a cleaner way
In fact, scientists are working on making bricks out of mushrooms. For example, Professor Han Weston and his team at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, are trying mush-room bricks. They combine mushrooms with farming waste, such as straw according to science magazine Horizon.
The mushrooms grow on the straw for about two weeks. Then they can be made into different materials. “If we press it, we can get a material like hardboard,” Weston said.
Making mushroom bricks causes much less CO2 than making materials like cement(水泥). They are also biodegradable(可生物降解的), so we don’t have to worry about them polluting our land when they’re left behind. Mushroom materials can also self-repair—if you accidentally damage your house, just re-grow the mushrooms to repair it. NASA scientists even want to use it to “grow” houses on the moon or Mars. This way, they don’t need to bring heavy building materials aboard spaceships.
There’s still a lot of research to be done of course. “It’s very early days to start saying your house will be all made of mushrooms,” said researcher Philip King. “Still, we need to make progress and the future of mushroom materials looks bright.”

When we see babies or pets, we can’t help gently touching them to show our love. And they give us happy feelings back. But a recent study shows that it’s different for plants.
A study, published in The Plant Journal, shows that plants don’t like to be touched. That’s because touching changes their genes(基因)and, even worse, can slow their growth. Professor Jim Whelan in Australia gave an explanation. The lightest touch from a human, animal, insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, leads to a huge gene change in the plant.
In order to test the theory, the scientists did an experiment on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as the result of the touch, the mitochondria(线粒体)in the plants had been partly destroyed. The mitochondria are the “power-house” of the cell(细胞).The mitochondria produce energy for the cells in both animals and plants. If this “power-house” is weakened, the plants will lose a large amount of energy that should have supported their growth.
Whelan further explained, “If the touching is repeated, then plant growth is reduced by 30 percent.”Although the touching does have a strong influence on plants, usually the plants can still be alive. Touching changes the plants, but it’s not always a bad change. Continually touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than other ones. However, in some ways, this change could be helpful. It may help plants fight threats to their health such as insects and bad weather.
The new research findings have led to a deeper understanding of the plants. And the research might help with the growth of plants.

A.To explain why pets love to be touched.
B.To find out why some plants grow more slowly.

92.What can we learn from the passage
A.Touching can have a good influence on plants’ growth.
B.We’re not sure how to help plans grow by touching.
C.It’s necessary to avoid touching the plants all the time.
D.The changes of the plants by touching may be not bad.

Don’t doubt it: Machine learning is getting hotter. Artificial Intelligence (人工智能AI) is increasingly used in the classroom teaching of primary and secondary schools.
What does it look like in the classroom
The school has a special learning system called Focus. Teachers put their teaching materials like textbooks and PPTs (幻灯片) on it. When they have classes, students enter the system and download (下载) the materials with their iPads. It makes the classes interesting and efficient (高效的). Zhu Jiefeng, a math teacher at Hangzhou No. 9 middle school, said, “We have been studying square root (平方根) during this period of time. Through analysis (分析) of students’ homework exercises, I found that there are still some problems with the students, then I know how to help them.”
In the class, for every question raised by the teacher, every student can answer it online. This increases participation (参与) for students.
Pan Jing Wen, a geography teacher said, “the teaching of liberal arts (文科), besides knowledge, may also need to tell some stories, some feelings. For example, a few weeks ago, we learned about London in the UK. I prepared a video in which students saw many places of interest in London. Students are more active in class.”
However, the key to use iPads well is to have good self-control. Otherwise, some students may do something which has nothing to do with study.
