Everybody has a brain, but not many people know how the brain works. Some people believe that the brain is like the hard disk of a computer. We use it to store files—pictures, language (words, texts, sounds) and so on. Others compare the brain to a huge cupboard with lots of shelves and boxes in it. We put information into these boxes and hope to find it again later.
The brain is not A computer disk, And it isn’t a cupboard. Look at the picture here. It looks a hit like weeds(杂草) in a garden, doesn’t it The picture actually shows a child’s neocortex—a part of the brain that controls sight and hearing. You can guess what happens—more “weeds” grow as the child gets older, Scientists call these neuronal(神经元的) networks. The networks grow around our neurons. What makes them grow Learning! “Learning is brain change,” says Professor James Zull from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. “Without learning, nothing changes in the brain. For every new word you learn in your English lesson, every problem you solve in maths, every new song you learn to sing, a neuronal network grows in your brain and the brain changes.”
The more neuronal networks we grow, the better we can think and the better we remember. You may wonder if there is anything you can do to make the networks in your brain grow better. Professor Zull says yes, there is. He says that brain change is strongest when a) you are interested in and like what you are learning, b) you are in control of what you learn and c) you get challenging tasks that make you think hard. Understanding a challenging task makes you feel good and develops your brain.

In 1798, German composer Ludwig van Beethoven marked the first passage of his newest composition (作曲) with the Italian term “grave”, meaning slow and serious. He was troubled to learn that he was losing his hearing, but his Sonata Pathétique (《悲怆奏鸣曲》) sounded exciting and optimistic (积极的). It has inspired (激励) many people over the years.
On Aug 29, 18-year-old Xiong Linghao from Chengdu Special Education School played the sonata at the 13th Shanghai International Youth Piano Competition. A video of her performance has got over 7 million views online.
It’s been a long and hard journey for Xiong. She lost her eyesight because of a medical accident when she was still a baby. Her mother later found that it was not that bad. At the age of 3, she could play children’s songs on a small electric (电子的) piano. At 6, she started learning the piano for real.
Unlike people who can see the keyboard, she must remember where each note is. Practice is the key to success because she needs to form muscle memory (肌肉记忆) so she can find the right notes. She practices six to eight hours every day. “I listen to the melody (旋律) again and again and then send what I hear to my fingers.” Xiong said.
“Xiong Linghao has a real gift for hearing, and that’s important for a pianist, especially a blind person. She won’t succeed without such great hearing.” her teacher said.
Xiong won the Special Jury (评审团) Prize at the competition. “The piano has been with me through my ups and downs in its own way,” she said. “It empowers me and brings so much joy into my life.”
