Small Talk—Reading and Writing
Teaching Aims:
Have students comprehend the article “How good are your social skills”, learn the rules of small talk from it, and write a reply based on the points requested in Alex’s email using the rules from reading comprehension
Help promote students writing skills, including language competence in English, thinking and organizing ideas inter-cultural appropriately, and writing with coherence
Help develop students’ inter-cultural communicating skills and raise their inter-cultural communication awareness by teaching them some of cross-cultural small-talk rules and writing a reply.
Teaching Important Points:
Read the article of “How good are your social skills” and select some useful rules on how to make small talk
Lead students to read Alex’s email and write a reply based on the points requested in the email and encourage them to try to use the rules from reading comprehension Teaching Difficult Points:
Instruct students to think logically before writing and organize their writing in a logical way
Help make their composition coherent, consistent with the style and inter-culturally appropriate

I have a favor to ask. Next week, I’m going to a reception at the Chinese Embassy here in London and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m going to meet some senior high school students and their teachers. The only problem is that I’m not very good at small talk with people I don’t know—I’m always worried about saying the wrong thing or making people feel bored.
