I sat in the armchair in the backyard, hoping for peace of mind. Earlier that morning I accepted a job transfer(调动) from our small town in pennsylvania to Orlando, Florida. My husband,Frank, and I felt it was the right decision. Our children have grown up and moved away from home,so we were ready for a change. But now I wasn't so sure. We would leave our friends, our church and our whole lives. Frank would be unemployed until he found a job there. We had to sell our house and find a new one! What had we got ourselves into
Then I fell asleep. In my dream,a name flashed before my eyes like a colourful light sign: Mary Clauser. I woke up suddenly. Mary and her husband, Lee,were our friends, who lived in an apartment in a neighbouring town. They visited us once years before. Still, I couldn't ignore what I'd seen.
I called her. “Hi,Mary! I want to let you know that we're moving to Florida,” I said. Mary asked, “Does that mean you're selling your house?” “Yes.” “Great! Can I stop by tonight?” she asked. “Of course,” I said.
Mary arrived that night and I showed her around. “Our home was originally built for a wounded soldier,” I told her. “It has wide doors and even a heated garage.” “I remember.” Mary said. Then she explained that Lee had become ill. He could no longer climb the stairs to their apartment and they needed a new place to live as soon as possible. Mary said, “I never told you that Lee grew up in this neighbourhood. His parents live less than a mile away,so they'd be able to help him when I am not in.”
We had our buyer. And I had peace of mind.

In many cultures white is often associated with something positive. A white-collar job, for instance, is the kind of job many people look for, working with your brain but not with your hands.
White has a clean and pure image. That is why doctors, dentists and nurses usually wear white uniforms. Babies are dressed in white at baptisms(洗礼) and brides wear white wedding gowns at weddings. White in these cases is the symbol of innocence or purity. Sometimes white is used in expressions that are not good. “Whitewash” is one such expression. At first, “whitewash” meant painting over something with white paint to make it look better. However, it means something different today: hiding or covering up mistakes or failures.
A “white elephant” is another example of white used in a negative way. In ancient Thailand, a white elephant was regarded as a sacred animal, but it was very expensive to keep. The kings of those days presented a white elephant to the people they wanted to ruin. Once they received this holy, royal animal as a gift, they were not allowed to sell or kill it. Today, a “white elephant” means something that is big, useless and unwanted. In America, when people want to get rid of their furniture or clothes, they often have a “white elephant sale”.
4.The text is mainly about ______.
A.the meanings of white in English culture
B.the history of some English idioms
C.some interesting customs in English culture
D.some useful English words and expressions
5.Which expression has a historical background
A.Whitewash. B.White-collar.
C.White elephant. D.White elephant sale.
6.From the text we can learn that ______.
A.a white elephant sale is useful to the poor
B.the white color is important in our daily life
C.a white-collar job used to be easy to get
D.expressions with white have different meanings
7.The author develops the text mainly by ______.
A.analyzing its cause and effect
B.providing typical examples
C.comparing different ideas
D.following the time order

I arrived at my mother's home for our Monday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt(被子)after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. She was preparing for a quilt show at the Elmhurst Church. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I pulled it out. “What is this?” I asked.
“Oh?” Mom said, “That's Mama's quilt.”
I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had pieced it together: irregular designs, childish pictures, a crooked line on the right.
“Grandmother made this?” I said, surprised. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn't look like any of the quilts she had made.
“Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” she said. “I'm still working on it. See, this is what I've done so far.”
I looked at it more closely. She had made straight a crooked line. At the centre of the quilt, she had stitched(缝)a piece of cloth with these words: “My mother made many quilts. She didn't get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.”
“Oh, this is so nice, Mom,” I said. It occurred to me that by completing my grandmother's quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother. I realized, too, that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.
8.Why did the author go to her mother's home
A.To see her mother's quilts.
B.To help prepare for a show.
C.To get together for the family dinner.
D.To discuss her grandmother's life.
9.The author was surprised because______.
A.the quilt looked very strange
B.her grandmother liked the quilt
C.the quilt was the best she had seen
D.her mother had made some changes
10.The underlined word “crooked”in the passage most probably means______.
A.unfinished B.broken
C.bent D.unusual
11.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.A Quilt Show B.Mother's Home
C.A Monday Dinner D.Grandmother's Quilt
D
Today many people want adventure when they go on holiday; they want a challenge and excitement. But there are other more important elements (元素;因素) they look for in their holiday. The main one is that they want to have a sense of achievement from their holiday. That is why growing numbers of today's holidaymakers are turning to eco?tourism.
Travelers who choose eco?tourism can contribute to the environment rather than destroy it; and there are more and more projects to choose from. In Antigua (安提瓜), guests help the endangered loggerhead turtles (海龟) by covering up their tracks against predators (天敌). In Boston, USA visitors work with the Museum of Science to create a Science Park. In Egypt, eco-tourists join in a “Green Program” for planting trees, bushes and flowers.
The most selfless eco-tourism projects can be found in England. One organization offers tourists eco-work from 9: 00 a. m. to 5 : 00 p.m. and warns them that, although the work is very rewarding, it can also be demanding! Holidaymakers choose from many different types of holiday: archaeological construction (repairing and rebuilding stone walls), outdoor conservation work and so on. Those who are lucky enough to find a place on holiday are involved in productive projects, such as clearing paths, preserving plants. Sometimes the work is heavy, like cutting down weeds and rebuilding stone walls. It's rewarding, though! One visitor was challenged to provide a stream crossing, to connect pathways on both sides. After several days' hard effort and determination from her and the rest of the group, there was a footbridge in place which they were able to cross. At the end of a week's holiday, they all stood on the bridge to have their photo taken above the stream. It was a great achievement, a break from the usual 95 routine, and a big “plus” for the environment.
12. According to the writer, what do people want during their adventure
A. enjoyment B. relaxation
C. protection D. achievement
13. From the third paragraph we can learn that______.
A.people can be offered a job on their eco-tour
B. people who are offered eco-work are paid by the hour
C. people feel it rewarding to join in eco-tourism projects
D. people can find interesting eco-tourism project only in England
14. The underlined phrase “a big ‘plus’” means______.
A. a great contribution B. great progress
C. one great step D. a pleasant thing
15. The following projects belong to eco-tourism EXCEPT______.
A. to build a little wood bridge which is convenient for tourists
B. to help rebuild the damaged walls
C. to make some signs telling tourists how to protect animals and environment
D. to take a stone or a rare plant away as a reminder

Good student-teacher relationships result from the choices that are made even before school, and how those choices are carried out on a daily basis. Here are a few tips to make this process easier for both parties.
__16__
For the teacher, this means that they need to look at each student from the perspective(角度) of what that student could learn, rather than what that student learned last week or last year. For the student, this means that they need to enter the classroom every day with the willingness to trust the teacher to help them understand. __17__Every school day there are new opportunities to learn new information or to understand subjects that might have been difficult in the past.
__18__
This is not to say that you have to “buy” the affections(关爱) of the student or the teacher, but you can give the gift of a smile, the gift of attention in class,or the gift of eye contact. Giving this type of gift always helps to build strong relationships.
Demand the best.
__19__ We can trust friends to keep us responsible and when developing good student-teacher relationships, the same principle of trust applies. Setting high expectations always pushes us to be our best, and when both the student and the teacher are pushing the other for more depth, more wisdom(智慧), more insight(洞察力), etc, then both the student and the teacher will give more.
To develop a good student-teacher relationship, both the student and the teacher must be willing to decide to do these things daily. Each day, they must be willing to try again and work on the relationship. __20__
A.Buy gifts for teachers.
B.Focus on the positive.
C.Give gifts to one another.
D.We can always learn a lot from our teachers.
E.Future learning is never limited by past experiences.
F. Good relationships are always founded on honesty and high expectations.
G.The most important thing is to trust the relationship to benefit each of the members.

Dear Jane,
I would like to give you my opinion about being on the Internet.
More and more middle school students here are starting using the Internet, through which they can get a great deal of the latest information. They can enjoy lessons given by the best teachers of net?schools at home. And it is easy and convenient to keep in touch with friends by sending and receiving e-mails. On the other hand, some students have spent too much time chatting and playing games on the net. And there is something harmful to the students. At last, I suggest that students should be good at using the Internet for their studies but not be online for long.
Yours,
Zhang Ming
