作文(二)
But these books were far from enough. To ensure the children could read more books, Sadiya took a picture of the library and posted it on Facebook, asking people to donate books. Not long after her post, thousands of books came flooding in. Sadiya, her uncle, and her cousin spent two weeks checking and classifying the books. Moved by her spirit, her family started to understand her desire to help people and helped her arrange those books on the shelves. Although Sadiya was exhausted, she felt it was all worth it when she saw the tidy library filled with books.
With everything ready, the library finally opened. Several children stepped in curiously and were surprised by what they saw. The room was very attractive. As time went by, more and more children came inside. Sadiya’s efforts opened the door to wisdom for the children in Deora, and would surely make a difference in their lives. Sadiya knew that she wouldn’t stop. This was a first step towards making sure the people of her village were better educated and had the opportunity to develop new skills.2022-2023 学年高一下学期入学考试

The morning after an evening struggle to care for my three-year-old daughter, I couldn’t wait to
set her to school. I, as a mother, was tired from the anger and her inability to communicate because of
her slowed language development.
As I accompanied her into the car, I felt desperate. Nothing was right with our world. She’d been
born around the same time when the nation was witnessing the birth of another Great Recession. My
job and my house had been victims(牺牲品). Then this happened. My child’s language delay(语言发育
迟缓) was identified, but doctors struggled to properly help her. I felt like we both needed to be
rescued.
I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with my little girl as when I left. Walking slowly toward
the school’s playground gate, I found her preschool teacher racing to greet me. “You should have seen
her today!” His breathy words were supported by excitement. I didn’t interrupt. “See that climber.” He
pointed to a wooden piece of playground equipment that looked like a rock wall. I nodded. “Well, every
day since she started school, she’s tried and failed to make it to the top.” He took a breath. “And today
she did it!”
He expressed his joy just as he’d witnessed her conquering Mount Everest! “She cheered and
celebrated! I wish I’d recorded it!” His words comforted me. My daughter had conquered her
mountain.
As she ran toward me. I recognized something I hadn’t before. I saw her perseverance(毅力). I
saw her strength. I saw a Hero.
Everyday greatness celebrates ordinary people who do unusual things in big and small ways,
showing courage, kindness, love and selflessness. We encourage you to click these brief accounts and
invite you to share your own story.

For many people, catching a smell of freshly cut grass is a pleasant sign that warmer weather is
here to stay. For the grass, however, this scent signals an entirely different story.
The smell we associate with freshly cut grass is actually a chemical SOS, one used by plants to
beg nearby creatures to save them from attack. After all, when danger strikes —whether it’s gardening
equipment or a hungry caterpillar — plants can’t lift their roots and run. They must fight where they
stand. To protect themselves, plants employ a string of molecular (分子) responses. These chemical
communications can be used to poison an enemy, warn surrounding plants of dangers or attract helpful
insects to perform needed services.
Clearly, plants can communicate. But does that mean they can feel pain According to some
researchers, plants release gases that are the equivalent of crying out in pain. Using a laser-powered
microphone, researchers have picked up sound waves produced by plants releasing gases when cut or
injured. Although not audible to the human ear, the secret voices of plants have revealed that
cucumbers scream when they are sick, and flowers cry when their leaves are cut.
There’s also evidence that plants can hear themselves being eaten. Researches show that plants
understand and respond to chewing sounds made by caterpillars dining on them. As soon as the plants
hear the noises, they respond with several defense mechanisms.
For some researchers, evidence of these complex communication systems — giving out noises via
gas when in pain — signals that plants feel pain. Others argue that there cannot be pain without a brain
to register the feeling. Still more scientists infer that plants can exhibit intelligent behavior without
possessing a brain or conscious awareness.
As they grow, plants can change their paths to avoid obstacles or reach for support with their
tendrils (卷须). This activity comes from a complex biological network distributed through the plants'
roots, leaves and stems. This network helps plants reproduce, grow and survive.
28. What does the smell of freshly cut grass signal
A. Warmer weather. B. Being poisonous.
C. Cry for help. D. The need of services.
29. How do plants convey their pain
A. By giving out gases. B. By changing the color of their leaves.
C. By producing audible sound waves. D. By sharing it through the root systems.
30. What makes plants’ intelligent behavior possible
A. Their tendrils. B. Their biological network.
C. Their communication systems. D. Their conscious awareness.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Do plants feel pain
B. How plants protect themselves
C. Do plants communicate
D. How plants grow and reproduce

Handwritten Chinese characters (文字) can be beautiful. I still remember looking at Chinese and
not understanding anything it said and yet feeling a strong attraction. In fact, some students start
learning Chinese because of the characters. After having studied Chinese for a while, I realized that
handwriting in Chinese takes a very long time to learn.
Living as we do in a digital era (数字时代) with smartphones and computers, most students
sooner or later ask themselves this question: Is it really necessary to learn how to write by hand in
Chinese When using smartphones or computers, we can use phonetic input (语音输入) systems,
which choose the characters we want for us as long as we can remember how they are pronounced.
Since we enter different characters, we seldom need to be able to recognize the difference between
characters in detail; the computer makes the right choices for us. Do we really need to write Chinese by
hand at all
I think most people agree that you should learn to write at least some characters at some point as a
student of Chinese, although not necessarily straight away and not necessarily all the characters that
you can say. But unless you don’t care about written language at all, you should learn the basics of
handwriting. Without it, it will be very hard to understand characters. You don’t need to be a
calligraphy master (书法大师), but you do need basic handwriting skills to do this. Simply looking at
things is, as usual, a bad way of learning.
I think learning the most common 500 characters or so is a good idea for all students. If you
actually want to write by hand, increase that to 1, 000. Then learn to handwrite characters outside of the
1, 000 most common on a need-to-know basis.
32. What does the author think of Chinese characters
A. They are less communicative than English words.
B. They attract some foreigners to learn Chinese.
C. They show the greatness of Chinese culture.
D. They are not really that difficult.
33. What can we infer about characters in Paragraph 2
A. Characters are very difficult for foreigners to learn.
B. People believe learning to write characters is important.
C. People doubt the necessity of learning to write characters.
D. Characters may disappear with the development of society.
34. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Understanding characters.
B. Being a calligraphy master.
C. Keeping a good learning habit.
D. Learning basic handwriting skills.
35. What’s the author’s attitude to learning to write characters in the digital age
A. uncaring. B. worried. C. supportive. D. surprised.

第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选
项。
New Year’s resolutions(决心) usually are like some of those promises that are meant to be broken.
The word “New” in the new year, puts a lot of pressure on starting over and turning a new leaf. But you
must remember you cannot just become a different person overnight when the clock strikes 12.
____36____. Instead of making resolutions that cause you stress, anxiety or more pain, set out this year
by making resolutions that will encourage self-care.
To start fresh this New Year’s Day, here are a few tips setting realistic new years’ resolutions in
order to avoid the burden of disappointment next year.
Choose a very specific goal
Unclear plans like “lose weight” “exercise more” or “write more” are goals with no teeth.
They are unclear plans and desires, and are very easy to explain away due to how unclear they are.
____37____. Such goals with a certain task, are much more doable than unclear goals.
____38____
Once you have chosen your goals, make a very detailed plan of how you will reach that goal.
Having a plan and a pathway can help you imagine your progress and won’t make you impatient for
immediate results. That way you will have already imagined what progress would look like for you in
say, 3 months, 5 months, 7 months or every day depending on your goals.
Get yourself a social group
In today’s social media world, it is easy to find a group of like-minded individuals interested in
sharing your goal. Get yourself a social group like this. However, just as there is this bright side to
having a social group, the problem is the pressure. Don’t get consumed by social media and what others
are doing. ____39____
Accept failure and forgive yourself.
____40____. Accept this failure; own it and forgive yourself. Being hard on yourself will only do
you more harm, so instead learn from what went wrong and instead of quitting the resolution at the end
of next year, see it through until you reach your goal.
A. Make a plan to reach that goal.
B. Be patient with your progress.
C. Instead, set goals like “exercise 20 minutes every day” or “lose 15 pounds”.
D. Despite all your efforts, it is possible that you might fail or make a mistake.
E. Therefore, new year’s resolutions usually end up in failure.
F. Change is a difficult process-the key words being “difficult” and “process”.
G. Remember you have this group only for support, not for comparison.

18-year-old Sadiya was born in Deora, a small village in eastern India, but moved to the city of
Mumbai when she was 3. In 2020, when the pandemic(疫情) broke out, her father’s small business was
forced to close temporarily and the family returned to her ancestral village to wait out the pandemic.
However, it greatly shocked her when she found that attending school was uncommon in Deora,
where almost half of the villagers couldn’t read. Unable to afford textbooks, many families often
withdrew(撤退) their children from schools. They didn’t wish to educate their children, many of whom
had to work in the fields with parents though some had the desire to read.
Sadiya, the college girl with a strong sense of social responsibility, has been trying to seize
opportunities to open doors for others. Fluent in Hindi, Urdu, and English, she often speaks at
inter-college events on the right to education and enjoys a high reputation among college students.
Used to taking on challenges, Sadiya was determined to do something for the village children. One
day last July, Sadiya sat down with her family elders and put forward the idea of setting up a library.
Many shook their heads in disagreement—this wasn’t how a young girl should spend her time.
After many discussions, Sadiya finally convinced(说服) them and gained access to her relative’s
guesthouse, mending it with $67 that she’d won in public-speaking awards. She took the help of her
uncle, Akbar, and cousin, Nawaz, and got to work. Walls were repainted, the bamboo roof was repaired
and lights and bookshelves were fixed, and the room was filled with chairs and a long table. Pictures on
the walls brightened the space. Looking at the newly-decorated “library”, Sadiya couldn’t hold back
her excitement while imagining the children reading books here by light.
All was ready except books. So what Sadiya wanted to do next was fill the shelves with books.
She drew on all her savings and bought many books suitable for children online.
