Reading Practice
Teaching aims
1. To enable the students to understand the main idea of the four poems.
2. To enable the students to know how to read and enjoy an English poem.
3. To enable the students to learn some useful words and expressions in the poems.
4. To train the students’ s reading ability.

Step 1. Leading-in
I will ask the students a question which is" Do you love poem " and then, show them a famous English poem .
Life is dear, Love is dearer, Both can be given up for freedom.
Then ask them about their ideas about the poem and show them the translation of it in Chinese.
生命诚可贵, 爱情价更高, 若为自由故,两者皆可抛。
Step 2. Review
Read some words and phrases that they had learned before and these words may appear in the poems.
pilgrim 朝圣者 glowing炽热的,发光的 murmur 低声说
flee 逃跑,逃走 pace 踱步走 amid 在……中

Step 3. Reading
Task 1 Fast reading
Give the students 1 minute to look through the four poems and choose the best title of them Roses

Task 2 Reading
1. Give some information of W.B. Yeats.
William Butler Yeats(W.B. Yeats) was an Irish poet, playwright, and mystic.
2. Play a recording of the first poem, When you are old, and then ask some students to read it again and try to imitating the recording.
3. Ask the students about their ideas and feelings of the first poem. 4. Show them the translation of the first poem.

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
当你老了,头白了,睡思昏沉
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
在炉火旁打盹,请取下这部诗歌
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look

5. Divide the students into 3 groups. The first group read "Lies about love", the second group read " Roses", the last group read " Auld Lyne Syne".
6. Give some information about the poets.
David Herbert Lawrence (D.H. Lawrence) was an English novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic and painter.
George Eliot was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and lyricist. Task 3 Decide which poem describes

Which poem do you like best Please share your feelings and ideas with us. Step 5 Homework
Read the poem below and try to understand what the poet tries to tell us in the poem. And then translate it into Chinese.
