Jess Owens seemed sure to win the long jump at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. Just the year before, he had set three world records in one day. He was the record holder for the running broad jump with 26 feet 8 1/4 inches — a record that would stand for 25 years.
As he walked to the long jump pit, however, Owens saw a tall, blue eyed, blond German taking practice jumps in the 26 foot range. Owens was nervous. He was aware of the tension created with his presence. He knew the Nazi's (纳粹) desire to prove their “superiority”, especially over the blacks.
The pressure was obvious, and on his first jump Owens absently jumped from several inches beyond the takeoff board. Embarrassed, he fouled (犯规) on the second attempt, too. He was only one foul away from being driven out of the game.
At this point, the tall German approached Owens and introduced himself as Luz Long. Then an amazing event took place. The black son of an American farmer and the white model of Nazi manhood chatted in view of the entire stadium. What were they talking about
Since the qualifying distance was only 23 feet 5 1/2 inches, Long suggested making a mark several inches before the takeoff board and jumping from there, just to play it safe. Amazing! At the beginning of World War Ⅱ, this model of Germany's strength was providing technical assistance and words of encouragement to an enemy both on and off the field.
Owens qualified easily. In the finals, he set an Olympic record and earned the second of four gold medals during the 1936 Olympics. The first person to congratulate Owens was Luz Long — in full view of Adolf Hitler.
Owens never saw Long again, for Long was killed in World War Ⅱ. “You could melt down all the medals and cups I have”, Owens later wrote, “and they wouldn't be plating on the 24 carat (克拉) friendship I felt for Luz Long”.

Have you ever wondered how your favorite NBA team received its famous name All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names reflected the city's culture or history, others came from previous owners and many were selected through “Name the Team” contests.
For teams like Los Angeles and Utah, the names were not always a reflection of the city. Even though Los Angeles has no lakes, the Laker name has been a city treasure for almost 40 years. Before going to Los Angeles, the team originated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1948, team officials chose the name for its direct relationship to the state's motto, “The Land of 10,000 Lakes”. The team name went unchanged after moving to Los Angeles in 1960.
Because Utah's team originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was called the Jazz. In 1974, New Orleans club officials chose the name to represent the city for its reputation as the “jazz capital of the world”. The name stayed with the team even after finding a new home in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.
The Chicago Bulls' original owner, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is relentless (不屈不挠的) and never quits. Klein, who founded the club in 1966, believed these qualities were necessary for a championship team and hoped his Chicago athletes would live up to the team name.
Miami chose the Heat from names such as the Sharks, Beaches, and Barracudas. The name Magic was the winner for the Orlando team because the city's tourism slogan is “Come to the Magic.”
Tradition played a big part in naming the New York Knicks. Chosen by the club's founder Ned Irish, the Knicks' name was already important in New York's history. The first organized team in baseball history was named the New York Knickerbockers or the Knickerbockers Nine.
In 1967, the Indian Pacers selected their team name in a different way from most other teams. Their decision was based on what they wanted to accomplish in the NBA. Team officials chose the Pacers name because the organization wanted to set the “pace” in professional basketball.

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Jaime Nared is nearly 6 foot 1 and blessed with Michael Jordan style skills. In games, she can more than hold her own against the boys, dropping three pointers and sometimes scoring 30 points or more.
And there, according to her coach, lies the problem.
“She's so good,” Michael Abraham said. “She makes the boys look like scrubs (灌木丛).” So she has been told she can no longer play on boys' teams at the Hoop, a private Beaverton basketball facility that runs a league in which Abraham's teams compete.
The trouble started last month, when some parents told the Hoop management they didn't like Jaime playing with the boys. Hoop officials informed Abraham that Jaime, after years on one of his boys' teams, was refused. Neal Franzer, the Hoop's director of operations, said Thursday that the parents were adamant (坚决的) but their complaints had nothing to do with Jaime's skills.
“They said the problem was that the boys were playing differently against her because she was a girl,” he said. “They'd been taught not to push a girl, and the focus had changed from playing basketball to noticing a girl was on the floor with them.”
Hoop officials e mailed Abraham to remind him of the rules. Abraham, Jaime and her parents didn't buy it. “I think the complaints come from parents who don't like seeing a girl that good playing against their sons,” Abraham said.
Jaime, who said she “fell in love” with basketball when she was 8, likes the boys' team because boys play a fast paced game.
Jaime's mum, Reiko Williams, said the issue boiled over after a particular game. “She scored 30 points,” Williams said. “I remember one play. She stole the ball and made a behind the back pass to a teammate. He missed the lay in, and she grabbed the rebound and put it in. I think it was just too much for some of those parents.”

Not everyone can become a professional basketball or football player. Not everyone, especially youth living in the city, has access to large green fields. But kids still want to compete. So all over America, young people started skateboarding and bicycling. This is where the Extreme Games, or X Games, started.
The X Games are beautiful to watch. They simply defy gravity. Riders fly down ramps on skateboards and do crazy tricks in the air. The X Games have become so popular that this year BMX cycling is the newest sport in the Beijing Olympics. You will see competitors descend a 25 foot (8 meters) ramp, the highest in the world, as they race through a wild obstacle course.
But the X Games are more than sports. They have become a culture. Fans of the X Games have rejected the mainstream. They wear certain clothes, listen to different music and live life to the fullest.
It is not unusual to see young people riding a skateboard or showing off their cycling tricks in a park. Extreme sports arrived in China in the late 1990s. The Chinese Extreme Sports Association was established in 2004.
Shanghai will hold the Asian X Games at the end of April. Check them out and maybe you'll find a new sport you love.

Ning Zetao has become China's new swimming star due to his amazing performance at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon (仁川), South Korea.
With already two gold medals in hand, the 21 year old clocked 47.70 seconds in the 100m freestyle, setting a new Asian record. This result has been recognized by FINA as the world's third best time this year, fast enough to have won a gold medal in last year's Barcelona World Championships.
“It is my first international event,” said Ning, who later won a fourth gold medal in Incheon.“I am happy that my results are pretty close to my personal best.”
Born in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou, Ning entered the local team at the age of 11 and joined the navy team in 2007.He first caught people's attention in 2009 when he finished eighth in the 200m individual medley at the National Games.
Nevertheless, Ning suffered from bone infection in both knees for a long time, which made him unable to train hard on his kicks.
He also had an indigestion problem and had to eat“soft” food which is easy to digest. His poor stomach even made it impossible for him to complete week long full time training.
But the young swimmer never gives up. His idol is the great Russian swimmer Alexander Popov, who continued to win Olympic gold medals after he was stabbed on a street. Ning said,“He was a real fighter and I need to learn from him.”
Taken better care of by coaches and doctors, Ning can now train as normally as others. And that is why he can get today's achievements.
The gold medals at the Asian Games also boosted the confidence of the new swimming star, who hopes to enter the national team and compete for China in more international events.
“Chinese men's swimmers have never been placed among top eight in the short distance freestyle,” he said. “I hope I can do it, just like what Sun Yang did in the mid long distance freestyle.”

Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only been few players who were truly great. How did these players get that way — was it through training and practice, or are great players “born, not made”? First, these players came from places that have had famous stars in the past — players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate. In the history of soccer, only seven countries have ever won the World Cup — three from South America and four from Western Europe. There has never been a great national team — or a really great player — from North America or from Asia. Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four.
Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood — a poor, crowded area where a boy's dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer (艺人). For example, Liverpool, which produced the Beatles, had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. Pele practiced in the street with a“ball”made of rags (破布). And George Best learned the tricks that made him famous by bouncing the ball off a wall (对着墙壁踢球) in the slums (贫民窟) of Belfast.
All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn't explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some unique quality that sets them apart from all the others.
9.According to the writer, which of the following statements is TRUE
A.Soccer is popular all over the world, but truly great players are few.
B.Millions of people all over the world are playing soccer, but only seven countries have ever had famous stars.
C.Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but only seven countries from South America and Western Europe have ever had great national teams.
D.Soccer is one of the most popular games all over the world, but it seems the least popular in North America and Asia.
10.The Brazilian streets are mentioned to show that ________.
A.famous soccer players live in slum areas
B.people in poor areas are born with some unique quality
C.children in poor areas start playing football at the age of three or four
D.a great soccer player may be born in a slum area
11.In the last paragraph the statement “...but only one became Pele” shows that ________.
A.Pele is the greatest soccer player
B.the greatest players are born with some unique quality
C.Pele's birthplace sets him apart from all the others
D.the success of a soccer player has everything to do with the family background
12.The writer mentions all the factors (因素) that may affect a soccer player's success EXCEPT ______.
A.his family background
B.his neighborhood
C.his practice
D.his character

Basketball, the world's greatest sport ever, but of course, it hasn't been around since the world began. No, somebody had to have invented it. And that somebody would be James Naismith.
Born in Almonte, Ontario, Canada, this Canadian Gym teacher and physician would soon be the founder of basketball. It all started in December of 1891. Naismith was teaching in Springfield, Massachusetts and was asked by Luther H.Gulick, the Headmaster of the school for Christian Works to make a new sport. The main idea of the sport was mainly to be played inside when it was too cold to go outside. The new sport also had to keep athletes in their top conditions between the baseball and football season. Naismith began to work. The first game ball was a soccer ball.
The first baskets were peach baskets that Naismith cleverly thought of hanging on the wall. From there, the legacy of basketball began. Originally, there was 9 men to each team, but the objective was still the same; to pass the ball to other players on your team and put the ball in the opposing team's net, or basket back then. From there, basketball caught on like wildfire.
During 1885 high schools and colleges began to adopt the game, and by 1898, the first Pro League was founded. After the first game played, Naismith drafted 13 rules and regulations, but many more were yet to come. The hoops we know today were invented in 1906.They were steel, with a net hanging from its rim.
Dr James Naismith is known world wide as the inventor of basketball. The concept of basketball was born from Naismith's school days in the area where he played a simple child's game known as duck on a rock outside his one room schoolhouse. The game involved attempting to knock a “duck” off the top of a large rock by tossing another rock at it. Naismith went on to attend McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. That saying holds true not only for you and me, but also for some of the most powerful and influential people in the world, such as the presidents of the United States.
But how do American presidents spend their vacation time Let's take a look!
Franklin D. Roosevelt, considered one of the greatest presidents in American history, had limited vacation options because of his polio (小儿麻痹症). He began visiting Warm Springs, Georgia in 1924 for its curative waters and later built a 2,000 acre polio treatment center nearby. He liked to cruise the Potomac on his yacht (游艇) and three times as president returned to his beloved Canadian island of Campobello, with which he fell in love as a kid.
Former President Bill Clinton, however, was never much good at vacationing. His staff had to practically force him to go on vacation his first year in office; his idea of relaxing was reading four good books simultaneously (同时) while enjoying a cigar (chewed, not smoked). He could also lose himself in a game of golf, where his somewhat flexible interpretation of the rules could at times drive his partners crazy.
Obama's predecessor (前任) also knows how to relax. Fishing is in the Bush family DNA: for blue sharks off the coast of Maine or anything with fins, almost anywhere else. George W. Bush also relaxed as president by jogging and clearing brush on his Texas ranch. Since leaving office, he has been an active mountain biker and, more recently, has taken up painting.
Obama tends to take a winter break in Hawaii, where he was born and raised, and a summer vacation in Martha's Vineyard, off the southern coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In between, he plays basketball every couple of weeks and has been known to do some skeet shooting at Camp David. Obama's favorite pastime, no matter the location, has been easy to spot: golf.
