Having video calls is normal in our daily life, but have you imagined being able to touch the person on the other end of the line
These days, a soft skin stretch device (SSD) has been invented by the researchers from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
It is a new kind of haptic device which can recreate the sense of touch and make it possible for us to touch people through a video call.
Haptic technology can mimics the experience of touch in ways that are similar in the real world. Today, vibration is the most common haptic technology and it has been built into many electronic device. At present, however, the haptic technology has great difficulty recreating the sense of touch with objects in virtual environments or at a distance, according to Mai Thanh Thai, lead author of the study.
Luckily, the research team introduced a new method to deal with the problem. The new technology can recreate the sense of touch through soft, man-made skin. “Our skin stretch device can be built into the finger parts of a haptic glove. It is like wearing a second skin —— it’s soft, stretchable and mimics the sense of touch. And it will make new forms of haptic communication to improve everyday activities.” said Thanh Nho Do, senior author of the study.
It works like this: Imagine you are at home and you call your friend who is in Australia. You wear a haptic glove with the SSDs and your friend wears a glove with 3D force sensors. Then when your friend picks up an object, it will physically press against your friend fingers. And the glove with 3D force sensors will measure these interactions. After that, the force signals can be sent to your glove, making you experience the same sense of touch as your friend.
The new haptic technology could be used in various situations, allowing users to feel objects inside a virtual world or at a distance. This could be especially helpful when people use video calls to stay connected with loved ones, it could also be used in medical practices. Doctors can feel a patient’s organ* with medical tools without touching them.
1.What problems does today’s haptic technology have
A.It is unable to mimic the touching experience in real world.
B.It is hard to use such technology in the electronic devices.
C.It fails to recreate sense of touch with objects at a distance.

Do you think you could live your life without buying anything There are people in the world who live in this way. They are called freegans. Freegans live a non-consumerist (非消费主义的) lifestyle—they reuse clothes, household items, and even food that other people just throw away.
Finding food plays a big part in the life of freegans. They look for food in the wild or even eat food that they take from dumpsters (垃圾桶). When you hear the word “dumpster”, you usually think of a smelly (发臭的), dirty place—but in reality, most food that is thrown away is of good quality (质量). Many supermarkets throw away vegetables and fruits simply because they look ugly. Freegans eat this kind of food.
I used to have many misunderstandings about the freegan way of living. I thought they were poor or homeless. But in fact, most freegans have the income to live just like regular consumers. Instead, they choose to live in a way that is more eco-friendly. Many of them also spend their free time volunteering to promote (宣传) a greener lifestyle.
It’s hard for many of us to live a freegan lifestyle because we are used to consumerism. This is why I really admire (敬佩) the freegans’ wish to protect the planet. I am now trying not to spend money on any unnecessary things. It is my first step in helping reduce global waste.

7.Why do some people live a non-consumerist lifestyle
A.Because they are poor and homeless.
B.Because they don’t have enough income.
C.Because they want to live a greener lifestyle.
8.What can we probably do to live a greener lifestyle
A.We can always live a poor life.
B.We can look for food in dumpsters.
C.We can spend less money on unnecessary.
9.What’s the best title of this article
A.A greener lifestyle B.To be a freegan C.Special consumers

Easter Island’s large and mysterious stone statues have made it world famous. These statues, which look like humans with huge stone cylinders balancing on their heads like hats, attract tourists coming from all over the world. The tourists come to see these works of ancient art carved by the early inhabitants of the island. They come to see the mystery that has baffled scientists for decades.
Easter Island is located in a remote part of the South Pacific Ocean about 2,300 miles west of Chile. The island covers just 45 square miles and its Polynesian name is Rapa Nui.
On Easter Sunday, 1722, a Dutch explorer named Jacob Roggeveen was the first European to see Easter Island. The original Polynesian inhabitants of the island arrived centuries earlier. Scientists believe they carved these statues to honor their ancestors.
The rock used for the making of the statues came from Rano Raraku, the extinct volcano that formed the island. The early Polynesians carved the statues within the holes of the volcano using only stone tools. Then they moved these huge statues to various destinations throughout the island. These 600 statues range in height from10-40 feet. Some of them weigh as much as 50 tons. How could the early Polynesians lift hundreds of heavy statues out of the volcano How did they move them across the island to their various locations All of these questions, as well as many others, remain unanswered.
The early islanders probably worshiped these eyeless giants until sometime around 1670. In 1680, a war broke out between two groups of islanders. The victors of the war and ancestors of the present inhabitants, broke down many of the statues. In most cases, they broke the necks of the statues.
Now 15 of the statues on Easter Island have been repaired to their original positions on their stone platforms. Even today, using modern tools and machinery, putting up such large statues and balancing cylinders on top of their head present a challenging task.

Sun bears(马来熊) are the smallest of the world’s eight bear species(物种). They have a black coat and a white or golden colour on their bodies. Their homes are in the tropical forests(热带雨林) of Southeast Asia. They live in trees and eat both plants and animals. They can grow to be 1.4 meters in height and 65 kilograms in weight. They usually live alone and are happy to spend most of their time by themselves.
Scientists studied sun bears in the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. They found that although sun bears mostly live alone, they have developed a surprising social skill. They can copy(模仿) other sun bears’ facial expressions(面部表情) as a form of communication. They can even copy exact muscular(肌肉的) movements that other sun bears make—such as making a face.
The ability to copy facial expressions is found in humans, gorillas(大猩猩), some monkeys and some other animals. But until now, only humans and gorillas have the ability to exactly copy facial expressions. However, scientists found that sun bears can copy facial expressions as well as humans and gorillas. This surprised them because sun bears are alone and they have no close relationship with human beings.
Although they live alone in the wild, the sun bears in the study often played gently with each other. Sometimes they played with faster actions such as hitting and biting. Scientists are still not sure what messages the sun bears were sending to one another.

I always think my daughter Kendall is the best—that’s just what parents do. When she was only three, she sang for the people, like a little angel.
When Kendall was five, we noticed that she sometimes had a tic. When the problem got worse, we took her from doctor to doctor. During the treatment, Kendall continued to sing. Surprisingly, her tics disappeared when she sang.
When Kendall was sixteen, we thought she would be cured soon. However, a terrible thing happened.
“At a party, Kendall jumped on a friend for a piggyback ride. He bent lower than she expected, and she jumped higher than he expected. Kendall flew over his back and landed on the floor—on her neck. She was rushed to hospital, paralyzed from the neck down. She couldn’t move. But her biggest worry wasn’t whether she would walk again, but was whether she could try out for a show called American Idol.
As the days went on, feeling on her left side returned, but she was still paralyzed on the right. We weren’t sure how much of her movement would come back. A friend brought a microphone and put it on her bed. Every day, Kendall tried hard to pick it up. It was more important for her to pick up that microphone than a spoon or fork.
Sometimes she had to bite a toothbrush to take her mind off the pain. We all cried because of the pain we witnessed. But on the day, only three months after her accident, we cried full of joy when she sang, though she didn’t enter the Top 24 of American Idol.
When she was a little girl, she asked me why it was she that had tics. My heart hurt, but I told her, “Kendall, you have a pure heart, a fantastic voice, a strong mind. And you are a beautiful presence”.

Do you remember your favorite toy growing up It didn’t matter whether it was a doll, a stuffed bear or a plastic soldier. That was your favorite toy and you loved it more than anything else in this world. What you probably don’t know is how it influenced your education and how, over the years, toys continue to improve the abilities and skills children need to prepare them for life. Toys are quite important in childhood development.
All experts agree: children learn by playing and toys are the instruments that allow them to discover the world they live in. And this is precisely why they interact with their surroundings through toys. And toys provide plenty of enjoyment and happiness, both of which help build their self-confidence.
Toys get children engaged in physical activity, by exercising their fine and gross motor skills. Whether they are coloring or dressing and undressing a doll, for example, children are using their sense of touch and sight while walkers, tricycles or toy cars strengthen their arms and legs. Toys also help them discover balance and coordination and by being physically active, children avoid becoming fat and adopt a healthy life style.
Ever since they are born, toys motivate babies to use their feet and hands in order to discover forms, colors and sounds. Once babies know how to sit and crawl, toys incite them to be on the move. If their favorite toy is out of reach, the baby will use its muscles to try and grab it.
Toys boost children’s creativity and help them express their emotions. Whether it’s through role playing or dolls, children are given the space to imagine familiar situations or invent fantastical worlds that lead kids to abstraction.
Often times, adults tend to identify the word toy with “something they sell at the store” but children, on the other hand, see toys are the objects included in their playing. These objects can be something real like a set of keys, a pot and a roll of toilet paper, or things they can transform, such as play dough, paint. These tools all help teach kids how to make decisions as they help spark their imagination while creating a universe they can play in.
Aside from the above, toys give them an understanding of the society they live in. Toys invite children to interact, first with adults and then with other children of their age. The simple act of playing with another child challenges them to experience situations where important lessons are to be learned: respect, cooperation and sharing.

In late May this year, strong storms passed through Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA.The floods(洪水) turned roads into brown rivers.
When storm drains get plugged up(雨水下水道被堵塞), rainwater builds up on the streets. It’s the leading cause of weather—related deaths in the United States. A team of local middle school students made a plan for solving this problem.
They are sixth-grade students Alyssa Neuber, Bianca Verri and Jose Pirela, all from Downtown Doral Upper School. With the help of their science teacher, they invented a device(装置) to warn city workers when and where there is a danger of flooding.
Bianca, one of the team members, said, “All of us have experienced problems with flooding, and we knew we had to do something about it.”One teacher at the school said, “Floods are common in South Florida, and students at our school hope their device will help.”
The students’ device uses a laser system(激光系统). When connected to storm drains, the device could warn the city workers if a drain is plugged up. Then the city workers could clean the drain at once.
Their project got support from many people. “Our classmates helped us in the beginning to find information about how to use the laser system,” said the team. “We each took on a task that we are good at and then started to work more closely with our science teacher. Class parents who were engineers also helped us a lot.”

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways Can they lie with their bodies and behavior Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When an enemy gets close to its nest, the plover leads it away from the nest. How It pretends to have a broken wing. The enemy follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How They don’t make nests. Instead, they get into other birds’ nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is normal for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food. As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.

A.Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.
B.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner’s hand.
C.Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.

My friend, Robert, has a twin sister named Amanda. Though they get along well, there are some things about Amanda and her friends that puzzle Robert. He can't understand how girls can talk for so long. For example, sometimes when he leaves home to play football, Amanda and her friend, Sharon, are sitting on the sofa, talking. When he comes back three and a half hours later, they're still sitting on the sofa, continuing the same conversation on the same topic. One day Robert was so curious that he asked Amanda what they talked about, but she replied, "We're best friends. We talk about almost everything—film stars, pop songs, recipes, everything!"
Boys and girls have different attitudes towards friendship. Friendships between girls are usually based on shared feelings and support, but friendships between boys are based on shared activities or interests. A boy is likely to be careful about sharing his feelings with his close friends. A girl's closest friend, however, might be eager to tell her about something that has happened in her life.
Many studies worldwide show that girls have more friendships than boys. In fact, many teenage boys cannot name a single best friend. When asked, they hesitate before answering, "My best friend I can't think about that. I am busy with my homework, and I have so many different friends that it is hard to choose just one best friend.”
Girls who have been asked can usually answer the question without pausing, “A best friend Of course. We have a lot to share with each other. We do a lot of things together such as talking and shopping.”
We have to realize: boys share activities, while girls share feelings. The qualities that boys and girls consider important in a friend seem to be the same, regardless of(无论)the basis of these friendships. The important thing to remember is that both of them are friendships. We all need friends in our lives.

When I was in the third grade, I watched a video that recreated the discovery of King Tutankhamen’s tomb (墓). I remember Howard Carter peering through a narrow hole in the tomb with a candle. A workman asked what he could see: “Wonderful things!” Carter said. From that moment. I knew what I wanted to do with my life.
Today, I’m lucky to work as an archeologist (考古学家). I study the lives of people who lived in Egypt’s Nile Delta. It’s exciting work. Sometimes you find something that was buried three thousand years ago. Holding a piece of history is an amazing feeling. So I decided what I wanted to be at the age of nine, and I made it happen. Seems easy, right Not quite! The road wasn’t easy. I did my studies — university, then a PhD.But along the way I was told many things: I was too young, I wasn’t qualified, I should get married and have kids. I also needed money, so I applied for six grants (津贴). The first five replies I got said no. Six months later, the last reply came. This time it was yes. Finally. I could start my own excavation (发掘).
For anyone thinking about a career, I would say: Never give up. If you want to do something, keep trying. If people tell you no, use that — it will push you. At the beginning, it hurts. But the next no hurts a little less. It makes you stronger and actually helps you.
Second, focus on your goals. And I stress yours, you don’t have to follow other people. If they say something has never been done, make it happen. You may be the first to do it! There are always challenges, but you overcome them in the end.

Everyone knows by now that plastic pollution is a big problem for the environment. Beying, for example, has dealt with this by stopping using thin plastic bags, plastic tableware and other plastic products in supermarkets, restaurants and hotels since May 1, 2020.
But an even better method might be on the way. Researchers at a French company called Carbios have discovered a bacterial enzyme that can break down plastic. The enzyme, which was first found in compost leaves, can not only break down plastic in hours, but also use the things left to create new products.
In fact, the first compost enzyme was found in 2012. Scientists changed its genes, allowing it to break down 90 percent of one ton of waste plastic in less than 10 hours. “It had been completely forgotten, but it turned out to be the best,” said Marty.
The new enzyme was discovered in research published in April, 2020. Before that, the team, led by Professor Alain Marty, studied over 100,000 micro-organisms to find one that could break down plastic quickly.
The enzyme especially breaks down PET, a kind of plastic that is most commonly used for plastic bottles and food packaging. It is also the fifth most common kind of plastic that we use.
However, waste bottles must be ground up and heated before the new enzyme is mixed in. These will make the recycled PET more expensive. But because of a shortage of this recycled plastic, people still like paying more money for it.
Carbios said it is working together with companies like Pepsi and Nestle — main users of plastic themselves - to develop their research and start using the enzyme in the factories. “There is still a lot of work to do to use it in the factories, but this opens the door.” said a research scientist.

Our school held many activities last week. We called it Road Safety Week. One of the educational activities was a speech given by a police officer. He shared something about the road safety. Here are some important points about his speech.
Most traffic accidents shouldn’t happen. They happen because people are careless. A frequent cause (原因) of traffic accidents is speed. Some people drive too fast. This means that if they have to stop suddenly, they cannot stop quickly enough to avoid (避免) hitting others. You need to remember this when you are crossing the street or walking along the sidewalk (人行道).
It’s not only drivers who cause accidents. However, people on foot-pedestrians (行人) , and bicycle riders often cause accidents, too. Pedestrians sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look on both sides before stepping into the street.
Do any of you ride a bike Bicycle riders can cause accidents by changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users. Before you turn left, for example, you should check behind you to make sure there aren’t any cars, trucks or buses coming. You should show with your left hand to tell that you want to turn left. You should not turn until the street is clear.
The rules of the road are very simple. If we learn them and obey (遵守) them, we should not have accidents any more. There were more other activities in Road Safety Week. I hope every student could learn something.
45.Most traffic accidents shouldn’t happen if ________.
A.people are more careful B.people don’t know the rules
C.people cross the streets quickly D.people stop their cars suddenly
46.The underlined word “frequent” in the passage means ________ in Chinese.
A.自由的 B.罕见的 C.频繁的 D.所有的
47.What shouldn’t the riders do when riding bikes on the street
A.Making sure there aren’t any cars coming.
B.Warning other road users before crossing the street.
C.Showing with your right hand to tell that you want to turn right.
D.Changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users.
48.From the police officer’s speech, we can learn the following except that (除了) ________.
A.riding bikes is the most dangerous
B.it’s not only drivers who cause traffic accidents
C.some people have accidents because they drive too quickly
D.obeying the rules of the road may stop you from having accidents
49.Which of the following is the best title of this passage
A.Safety First B.Road Safety Week
C.How to Keep Safe D.A Discussion about Safety

How can a fish talk ” The fish carried on, “You aren’t dreaming. I can read your mind. If you set me free, I’ll grant you three wishes.” Don hesitated (犹豫) for a while, but put the fish back to the sea later on.
Don continued his life as a fisherman just like before. One day, he walked past a poor village after fishing. Some children were sitting in front of their old and broken house. They had been hungry for days. Don quickly took out all his fish to them. He wished he could have more food for them. Suddenly, a lot of delicious food appeared on the table. While the children were sleeping after the big meal, Don saw that their clothes were too old. Don thought, “I hope they can have new clothes and I hope they can have new furniture so that they can live comfortably.” Suddenly, the clothes on the children became new and clean. The furniture in the house became new and comfortable, too.
Don remembered what the fish told him. “That fish kept its word …” he said to himself.

When you hear the word “hero”, you may think of someone like Mahatma Gandhi, who spent his life working for his country. But there are also many everyday heroes—they may not make any great achievements, but they do what they can to help make a difference to people’s lives. Everyday heroes are normal people who are making the world a better place. One such person is Robert Lee.
Lee grew up in New York City. As he lived in a poor family, he learned from a young age the importance of saving food. When he was in college, he was part of a student group that raised leftover(剩余的) food for the homeless. This experience made him realize how serious the problem of food waste actually was.
After graduating from New York University, Lee and a college friend created a nonprofit(非盈利的) organization called Rescuing Leftover Cuisine. Its purpose is to collect unsold food from restaurants and offer it to homeless shelters(庇护处) and food kitchens.
The process is simple. Using an app developed by Lee and his team, restaurants report how much leftover food they have each day, and then volunteers collect the food from these restaurants and deliver(投递) it to homeless shelters and food kitchens. In the end, the food will be delivered to those in need. Lee believes this is a very good way of delivery.
So far, Lee and his team have successfully delivered over 150,000 kilograms of food, serving almost 300,000 meals to people who need them. Lee has shown how we can take small action to improve the lives of people around us. But Lee says that his work is far from over, “It’s just the beginning. With more restaurants, who knows how much more we can do ”

Scientists found that people who have fewer friends in real life are happier than those with far more if many of theirs were online.
Social media, the researchers said, has encouraged younger people to have larger but more impersonal networks of “friends”. But instead of trying to get more friends, they added, a better cure for loneliness might be spending time with those you’re closest to.
Researchers from the University of Leeds, UK, studied data from two online surveys of nearly 1, 500 people. Those who took the survey gave details about their ages, social interactions (相互影响), and how satisfied they were with their social lives. They included details of how often and how they interacted with family or neighbours, and whether they included people who provided services to them in their networks.
The researchers found that those who had a small number of close friends generally were happier than those who had a large number of superficial (关系浅的) friends. “Loneliness has less to do with the number of friends you have, and more to do with how you feel about your friends,” said Dr. Bruine de Bruin, one of the researchers. “It’s often the younger adults who admit to having negative perceptions (负面看法) of their friends. Loneliness happens in people of all ages,” she added. “If you feel lonely, it may be more helpful to make a positive (积极的) connection with a friend than to try and find new people to meet,” she also said.
In her study Dr. Bruine de Bruin found that older people had smaller social circles than young people, but the people in these circles were closer to them. Younger people, on the other hand, had bigger circles that were made up of “peripheral others”—people who are not true friends, but just people they know. These so-called friends didn’t influence the younger people’s happiness.
The results of the study show that the stereotypes (偏见) society has about old people being sad and lonely might not be right. “The research shows that older adults’ smaller networks didn’t have a bad influence on social satisfaction and happiness. In fact, older adults had a better feeling of happiness than younger adults,” said Bruine de Bruin.
Based on these results, the study believes that people should pay more attention on the ties with close friends instead of increasing the number of friends.
