Many years ago in a village, Harlem, Holland, there lived a young boy. His name was Hans and he was eight years old. One autumn day, Hans went across the reservoir (水库) to visit an old blind man. He took the man some biscuits and stayed there for a while. Then, Hans decided to return to his home.
“The water in the reservoir usually gets higher in autumn,” said the old man. “Be careful Hans.” On his way home, Hans sang a song, watched the rabbits run around and picked some flowers for his mother. Suddenly, the sky got dark and heavy rain began to fall. Hans felt afraid and started to run. Just then, he heard the sound of water running away. He looked around carefully, and then noticed a very small hole in the dam (水坝).
Hans felt scared because he knew what could happen. The hole could get bigger and bigger. Then the dam could break and the whole Harlem would be covered by the water. Hans knew what to do. He put his finger into the hole, so no more water could come through it. “Please, someone, help me!” Hans shouted. But there was no one to help him. After some time, he began to feel very cold and tired, but he could not leave the dam. All night long, Hans waited and waited...
The next morning, a farmer walked by and heard Han’s cries. “I am trying to stop the water,” the boy said. “Can you help me ” The farmer called some other people and they quickly repaired the hole. Then, they took Hans home. Everyone was very proud of that boy.

Bob Miller was a woodcutter and he started a new job at a timber (木材) company. The pay and work conditions were quite good. In return, Bob worked as hard as he could.
His boss gave him an axe and showed him where he was supposed to work. On his first day, Bob cut down 18 trees. “Congratulations,” his boss said. “Keep going!”
Encouraged by his boss’ words, Bob worked even harder the next day, but could only cut down 15 trees. The third day, he tried even harder, but only cut down 10 trees. Day after day, he was cutting down fewer and fewer trees.
“I must be losing my strength.” Bob thought. Since the boss was treating him well, he felt really sorry and guilty. He went to his boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.
“When was the last time you sharpened your axe ” his boss asked.
“Sharpen I have no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut down trees.”
Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don’t take time to sharpen our “axe”. In today’s world, it seems that everyone is busier than ever, but also less happy than ever.
Why is this There’s nothing wrong with activity and hard work. Probably it is because we have forgotten how to stay “sharp”. We have forgotten to continuously improve our skills so we lose our efficiency(效率). Then we leave ourselves in a busy state and become stressed. We will feel less happy.
So remember, it’s worth taking time to sharpen your skills. As the saying goes, “More preparation may quicken the speed in doing work.”

During the last few years of his life, my dad lived just up the road from me in a tiny house. He had been alone for over 20 years after losing my mom. His own mother had recently passed away too. He was disabled and retired, so he spent a lot of time alone.
Several times a week, though, I would take a walk up to his house. We would sit in the living room, drink tea and talk. It wasn’t anything big. We talked about sports, cars, gardening, weather, and enjoyed a laugh over old memories. It wasn’t anything too deep. It was just a simple sharing, a connection between a father and a son, an hour spent just enjoying each other’s company. Those afternoons remain some of my happiest times spent with my dad. It allowed us to gently heal (治愈) any old wounds we had given each other when I was growing up. It allowed us to silently give each other time and love. It allowed us to grow closer together before he left this world.
I know that when my own time in this world is done, I will get to spend another afternoon with my dad. We will sit, talk, catch up, and quietly enjoy each other’s company. We will share all the love we didn’t get to share. And we will remember that afternoon forever.
If there is one thing that I learned from those afternoons, it is this: It is never too late to spend time with those you love. It is never too late to tell them that you love them. It is never too late to heal a relationship and mend a hurting heart. Begin today! Spend an afternoon with those you love and those afternoons will become a lifetime.

As a child, I learned what it was like to make every dollar useful, because growing up in a poor family, living on a tight budget (预算紧张) was normal. As a result, I could not wait to graduate, move out and make money myself.
I believed things would be different when I was finally on my own. However, it wasn’t quite as easy as I had hoped to walk into the real world for the first time.
In my late 20s, my world turned upside down in just 72 hours. My husband lost his job on Wednesday and two days later, I lost mine. In three days, we had no ways to support our family. As you can imagine, I couldn’t accept the news that both my husband and I were suddenly out of work. I wanted to find a place to hide, but that wasn’t a choice. I was scared and didn’t know what we were going to do. It was also one of only three times in our life when I saw fear in my husband’s eyes.
Luckily, our family had made a smart decision a few years earlier that saved us. It had taken us around two years, but we managed to save a $1,000 emergency fund (应急基金). Having our emergency fund allowed us to pay everything for the next six months. Without it, we would have probably been homeless in a short while.
I believe in the value of emergency funds because I’ve experienced how important they can be. Even if you can only afford to save five dollars a week, start saving.

Sometimes people come into your life and you know that they are there to teach you a lesson, or to help you understand who you are or who you want to become.
You never know these people who may be a classmate, a neighbor or a friend—but when you lock your eyes on them, you know that at that very moment they will influence your life in some ways.
Sometimes things that happen to you may seem unpleasant, painful, or frustrating at first. But in another way, you find that without getting over those difficulties you would have never realized your ability, strength or will power(意志力).
The people you meet and the success you get help to create who you are and who you become. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are sometimes the most important ones.
If someone loves you, give love back to them in the way you can, not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things.
If someone hurts you, or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being careful of people around.
Self-confidence is necessary to a person. If you’re not confident, it will be hard for others to believe in you. Learn a lesson in life each day you live!

It is hard to imagine how a person is to spend the whole life when only the head and hands are able to move.
Xu Ruiyang, an 21-year-old student from Kunming, has suffered(遭受)from spinal muscular atrophy(脊柱肌肉萎缩)since she was 2 years old. At that time, the doctor said that most children with spinal muscular atrophy will only live a few years.
The family did not give up, or even just complain(抱怨). To help Xu Ruiyang live with dignity(尊严), her parents trained her living and learning skills strictly. Opening a book or raising hands, some very easy actions for common people, however, are big challenges for Xu. She had to use her head or mouth to work together with hands to finish these actions.
When she started learning to write, she couldn’t even hold a pen. But she never gave up. Xu finally could write 500 Chinese characters before becoming a primary school student, after practicing thousands of times.
Over the past few years, Xu has overcome many problems, including the pain caused by the disease. Her parents worried about her health and advised her to drop out of school, but Xu’s answer was no. She said that she loved school. Besides, the pain was gone when she studied.
When asked by reporters on how to deal with difficulties, Xu calmly said, “Patience. When you can’t change anything, crying is useless, so just be patient.” In Xu’s opinion, her sunny and self-confident(自信的)personality also comes from the love of her parents.
In June 2019, she finished China’s Gaokao and received an offer from Sichuan International Study University.
