An Experiment Report on Growing Potato Plants
Things prepared:
*A potato that has sprouts (芽) *A flower pot with soil *A camera to record progress
Observation (观察)
Day 1
The color of the soil looks darker because I have just watered it. In the center of the pot (盆), I can see a tiny sprout that has grown from the potato under the soil. I’ll call it Buddy. Buddy is green and yellow. I wonder how fast it will grow.
Day 6
Without much change in the past six days, I finally see some new progress on Buddy as it has grown taller. It’s exciting to see new life like this. I hope Buddy can grow faster.
Day 11
Buddy is getting larger! Three more new sprouts have grown around Buddy! Green leaves have grown on the new sprouts, but they have not fully grown yet. I guess I need to be a bit more patient.
Day 13
Buddy continues to grow taller. The leaves on the new sprouts have grown a bit. I’m also excited to see more new sprouts that have grown from under the soil.

Your smartphone isn’t listening to you——but does secretly watch everything you do.
Scientists made the finding while finding out the long-held rumor(传闻) that apps are able to control microphones in smart devices to secretly record audio to help them better target(把……对准某群体) advertisements showed online.
Smartphone users have complained of the frightening feeling for years——their apps are listening to their every word, but the new study found no evidence(证据) of the practice ever taking place.
Scientists did an experiment that tested 17,260 of the most popular Android apps, including many owned by Facebook. Of those surveyed, more than half had the right to enter users’ camera and microphone, allowing them to activate the features(激活该功能) any time the app was open. Researchers found no evidence that any were secretly recording using the built-in microphone.
The latest findings dispel the rumor that apps like Facebook sometimes record conversations and send keywords to third parties to help them target ads. Users have complained that after chatting about some topics or tourist attractions, relevant ads will often appear across their apps or online browsing.
A closer look at the results shows that while apps are not listening, some do regularly record footage(镜头,片段) and screenshots of what users are doing. The software then send this information to a third party for analysis.
Researchers caught one app, GoPuff, recording the screens of users and sending the footage to mobile analytics company Appsee. The app, which has been downloaded more than 100,000 times from Google Play Store, took footage of a screen that asked for customers to list their zip code. Once this issue was brought to our attention, the company immediately disabled tacking capabilities(跟踪能力) for the mentioned app and removed all recording data from our servers.

On Nov. 16, seven astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) woke up to an alarm(警报). A Russian missile(导弹) test had just bombed a satellite into more than 1,500 pieces of space debris (残骸). Some got very close to the ISS.
NASA says space debris like this can travel at more than 28,000 km/h. That’s much faster than a bullet(子弹) (about 3,500 km/h). Even a pea-sized piece of debris could “wipe out” a space station or kill an astronaut if he or she is doing a spacewalk, says Live Science.
Since the 1950s, humans have sent thousands of rockets and satellites into space. Many are still there, and we now face an ever-increasing problem of space rubbish. In 2006, for example, National Geographic reported that a tiny piece of space rubbish hit the ISS, taking a small piece of glass out of a window. In June of this year, a piece of debris ran into one of the station’s robotic arms, which are just like the arms of a robot, and left a hole.
Scientists are trying different ways to deal with the problem. One way is to use a huge net. In 2018, the UK’s Survey Space Center caught some space rubbish with a net in an experiment. It first found the debris, and then collected it with a net and a harpoon(鱼叉).
Another way is to use robotic arms. Clear Space 1, the European Space Agency’s task to clean space rubbish, is going to be sent into space in 2025. It will use robotic arms to catch debris. This plans to throw the debris into Earth’s atmosphere(大气层), where it will burn up as it falls because of strong friction(摩擦).
13.According to NASA, space debris moves ________ as fast as a bullet.
A.eight times B.nine times C.seven times D.six times
14.The best ways to deal with space debris is ________ according to the article.
a. throwing it away into the planet
b. throwing it into the sun to burn up

A.ad B.cd C.ab D.bd
15.What can we infer from Paragraph 3—4
A.There is nothing we can do to deal with space debris.
B.The astronauts are quite safe in space even there is space debris.
C.More and more tasks are failing because we don’t want to cause space rubbish.
D.Thousands of old rockets and satellites are turning into space rubbish for years.

Day after day Buck pulled a sledge(雪橇). They started in the morning before it was light, and stopped in the evening after it was dark, eating a piece of fish, and going to sleep in their holes under the snow. Buck was always hungry. Francois gave him 750 grams of dried fish a day, and it was never enough. The other dogs were given only 500 grams;they were smaller and could live on less food.
Buck learned to eat quickly;if he was too slow, the other dogs would steal his food. He saw Pike, one of the new dogs, steal some meat from the sledge when Francois wasn’t looking. The next day Buck stole some and got away unseen. Francois was very angry, but he thought another dog, Dub, had taken it and punished him instead of Buck.
Buck was learning how to live in the north. In the south he had never stolen, and there he had never been so hungry. He stole cleverly and secretly, remembering the beatings from the man with the club.
Buck was learning the law of club and tooth. He learned to eat any food-anything that he could get his teeth into. He learned to break the ice on water holes with his feet when he wanted to drink. He was stronger, harder, and could see and smell better than ever before. In a way, he was remembering back to the days when wild dogs traveled in groups through the forest, killing for meat as they went. It was easy for him to learn to fight like a wolf, because it was in his blood. In the evenings, when he pointed his nose at the moon and howled(吼叫)long and loud, he was remembering the dogs and wolves that had come before him.

Time passed. There was plenty of food and no work in the Southland, and White Fang lived fat and happy. Except for Collie, all things went well for him. He learned how to laugh, and how to play at fighting with his master without really biting him. When his master rode his horse, White Fang went with him. He never got tired, because he ran like a wolf.
Once, when they were out riding, his master fell from his horse and broke his leg.
“Home! Go home!” said his master, when he understood his injury(受伤).
White Fang didn’t want to leave him.
“Go home and tell them what happened to me.” White Fang knew the meaning of “home”, though not the rest of the message. But he went.
He ran to Scott’s wife and pulled her dress, but it tore and she was afraid and angry. He stood before Scott’s father growling(嗥叫) until he told White Fang to lie down. He looked at all their faces.
“I think he’s trying to speak,” said Scott’s daughter, Beth.
And at that moment he started to bark — something he had never done before.
“Something’s happened to Scott,” said his wife.
They were all on their feet now, and White Fang ran out of the house. He looked back at them using his eyes to say: “Follow me”.
After this everyone liked him even more.

Ben, who was an excellent student at school, studied very hard. He got on well with all of his classmates and they all liked him so much. Unluckily, the poor boy’s father passed away because of a terrible accident two years ago, leaving Ben and his mother. Last Sunday afternoon, he went home from his school without saying anything. There would be a class meeting the next day. It was a rule that all the parents had to attend it . However, Ben didn’t want his mother to go to the meeting because she was a deaf-mute (聋哑人). With such a deaf-mute mother, he was afraid that other students and their parents would laugh at him. It was just what he could not stand.
Seeing her son getting home, the mother made a gesture (手势) of “I love you” as usual. Ben usually gave back a kiss to her in the past, but this time he didn’t say anything and went into his own room. Ben went for the table but he ate nothing with his head down. Her mother asked what on earth had happened to him. “Nothing serious. I just feel uncomfortable in my heart, Mum.”
The next day, forty-nine parents went into the classroom and sat on their children’s seats. Only Ben’s seat was empty. Ben was gloomy (忧郁的) on the seat. Suddenly, “please show your mother to your seat, Ben” the head teacher said. Ben’s mother made a gesture of “I’m sorry I’m late” to others. “Please explain your mother’s words to us, Ben” the head teacher said. So all the parents knew she was a deaf-mute. Then they all stood up from the seats and smiled to her in a friendly way.

Imagine this: you and your friend are on a video call. He or she picks up a book, and you feel like you are holding the book as well. You can shake hands or give your friend a high five, even though you are in different places.
A pair of special gloves might make this a reality. Researchers at the University of New South Wales, Australia, have made gloves that can recreate the sense of touch. They call this haptic device(触觉装置)a “soft skin stretch device”(SSD).
The SSD works like this: One user’s gloves create 3D force signals when they touch something. The signals are sent to the other user’s gloves, which vibrate(震动)to create the same force that the first user is experiencing. This allows the second user to experience the same sense of touch.
The SSD allows you to feel force, vibration and movement. “It is like wearing a second skin,” said Thanh Nho Do, one of the researchers who created the gloves.
Haptic technology is already being widely used. For example, the trackpads(触控板)in notebook computers use vibration to make it feel like you are clicking a real mouse. However, it is difficult to recreate the sense of touch in virtual(虚拟的)environments or remotely, according to Mai Thanh Thai, lead researcher of the SSD project. The SSD is special because it has a high level of sensitivity(灵敏度)even when it is used continuously. This makes it feel more realistic.
The SSD could be used in medical practice. Two doctors in separate places could work together during an operation—one touches the patient with the SSD while the other doctor feels the same sensation and completes the real operation.
47.What is the “SSD” in the story
A.A video chat app. B.A special pair of gloves.
C.A computer hard drive. D.A winter overcoat.
48.What does the underlined word “signal” mean in Paragraph 3
A.标志 B.信号 C.符号 D.姿势
49.Why does the SSD feel so realistic
A.Because it creates vibrations. B.Because it strengthens the senses.

Thirty-Six Stratagems(计谋), which show our ancient Chinese wisdom, are our ancient culture treasure. And many of these stratagems can still be put into practice in many fields, such as war, politics, business and even daily life. The following are four of them. Let’s enjoy the charm of our traditional culture.
Stratagem OneWhen a thief is in your house, you’d better shut your doors at once in order to prevent him from running away. Why For our ancient Chinese, there are two reasons. First, if you let your enemy run away, he will come back. Second, once your enemy succeeds in running away, it is dangerous for you to chase him. Stratagem TwoThis stratagem is from a poem by Du Fu, a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty. A line in the poem reads: “To shoot the man on horse-back, shoot his horse first; To catch the robbers, capture their leader first.” In a war if you want to beat the enemy, attack the leader first. Once the leader is caught, their forces will break down and fall into chaos.
Stratagem ThreeChinese always believe that tigers are more powerful when they are in the mountains. Once they leave mountains, they will become less powerful. And there are a few Chinese sayings linking tigers with mountains. The stratagem advises you not to directly attack an enemy in his own area. Instead, you should try to make him leave his place first, making him lose the geographical advantage. In this way, your enemy will be beaten easily. Stratagem FourExperienced fishers all know how to prevent a hooked fish breaking the line. Move the fish line from side to side to gradually make the fish calm down and get tired, and then you can catch it easily. In the same way, once your enemy is trapped, he will often struggle, trying to run away. Leave him the false feeling that he still has a chance to run away. When he gets tired and loses his guard, you can capture him with less difficulty.
54.Which of the following describes Stratagem Two A.Shutting the door to catch the thief. B.Catching your enemy’s leader first.
C.Letting the enemy off to catch him later. D.Tricking the tiger out of the mountain.
