There’s a mural(壁画)in Winsted,Connecticut, which is 5 stories tall and 120 feet long. Artist Ellen Griesedieck came up with the idea in 1999. More than 20 years in the making, the massive artwork is now on display.
Griesedieck calls the work the American Mural Project(AMP). That’s also the name of the arts center where it’s displayed. Rather than display the portraits(肖像趣)of the famous political figures in American history and the well-known great artists, Griesedieck preferred to meet people from different fields in small towns and cities all over the United States to create the mural. She took photos of them on the job. Then she painted them. There’s Pamela. She’s shown working at a Boeing aircraft factory in Everett,Washington, wiring a plane. There’s Nina, a farmer. And Edwin, a New York City police officer, and so on.
Student participation is a huge part of AMP. So far, it has worked with 15,000 students, from preschool to high school, in 17 states. In West Virginia, fifth graders from Ceredo Elementary School worked with a glassblower to make a 42-foot picture of water on which a fishing boat is floating. In New Mexico, kids made ceramic tiles(瓷砖). They’re pieced together to form the red-and-white shirt of a mechanic named Stitch. Kathy Reddy teaches art in Fairfield, Connecticut. She and her students have been involved with AMP for more than a decade.
The AMP building is a former factory. Inside, parts are still being added to the mural. Students who go to see the mural can take art classes at AMP, which also leads programs in schools. “We’re really focusing on hands-on,open-ended creativity,” says Michelle Begley, the director of education programs. “Our school visits always get the students’ hands dirty in the excitement of great art-making.”
4、Who are the leading characters of the mural
A. Famous artists. B. High school students.
C. Ordinary laborers. D. Political figures.
5、What can we learn about Ellen Griesedieck’s art project
A. It is long-term team efforts. B. It is inspired by the students.
C. It introduces local cultures. D. It is intended for the young.
6、Which aspect of students should be valued according to Michelle Begley
A. Their inner desire. B. Their academic level.
C. Their own talent. D. Their practical ability.
7、In which column of a newspaper can the text be found
A. Sports. B. Travel. C. Education. D. Business.
As heavy rains continue to fall, flooding has reached record levels in the southeast of Australia.
Victoria is the worst-affected state with some towns experiencing the highest river peaks in decades. The states of New South Wales and Tasmania are also experiencing flooding in an emergency that began last week. Federal Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt said Victoria’s facing serious flooding with more rain forecast for late this week. “It’s certain that we’ll see a flood peak happen and water levels fall, followed by another peak,as different river systems come together,” said Watt.
It’s said that between 9,000 and 34,000 homes in Victoria could wind up being flooded or surrounded by water. Tim Wiebusch, chief operating officer, estimated 85% of Rochester, a central Victorian town about 180 kilometers north of the state capital Melbourne, had been flooded by the overflowing Campaspe River. As emergency workers race to protect towns, the supply of sandbags is running low. “While we have a number of communities where rivers are starting to recede, there're still many rivers and communities that are under threat of major flooding in these coming days. Because the ground is already soaked(渗透),more flash floods are likely,” Wiebusch said.
In the affected areas, the flooding has closed hundreds of roads. Thousands of homes and businesses have been left without power. New South Wales and Victoria are both important farming areas, which produce fruits and vegetables, as well as grains like wheat and barley. The flooding has affected many farms. It’s still not clear how bad the long-term damage will be.
This is the third year in a row that Australia has suffered from extreme flooding. The floods are tied to a weather condition called “La Nina”, during which the air soaks up much more water from the oceans, and heavy rains are likely. The opposite is El Nino, which can bring extremely hot and dry conditions. In 2019, it led to severe bushfires in Australia.
8、Which can best describe the flood peaks in Victoria
A. They came from other states. B. They haven’t arrived yet.
C. They won’t be formed soon. D. They’ll appear repeatedly.
9、What does the underlined word “recede” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Become wider. B. Lose control. C. Fall back. D. Change course.
10、Why does the author mention the agriculture in New South Wales and Victoria
A.To illustrate the harm of the flooding.
B.To praise it for fighting against the floods.
C.To show its damage to the eco-system.
D.To warn people of the extreme weather.
11、What is the most suitable title for the text
A.Severe Flooding Hits Australia Again
B.Australian Farmland Suffers from Loss
C.Australians Are Beating the Big Floods
D.Two Weather Conditions Exist in Australia
Neurons(神经元)are special cells that make up much of the brain. When grown in small dishes in a laboratory, they automatically form connections with each other.
Researchers at Cortical Labs in Australia wanted to see if they could use neurons in a dish to control a simple computer game. To communicate with the neurons in the dish, the scientists grew neurons over a small electronic chip(芯片).The chip, which is linked to a computer, can both detect electrical signals produced by the neurons, and deliver electrical signals to them. They called their project “DishBrain”. The game the scientists chose was a simple version of Pong, which was a little like ping-pong. A ball bounces around the computer screen, and players have to move a paddle(球拍)up or down to keep the ball from bouncing off the side of the screen.
But why would the cells want to learn to play the game The scientists used the free-energy principle, which states that brain cells want to be able to predict what’s going on in their environment. So they would choose predictable stimulation over unpredictable stimulation.
“If they hit the ball,we gave them something predictable,” said Dr. Brett Kagan, who led the research. “When they missed it,they got something that was totally unpredictable.” So the neurons got a nice pattern of electrical activity every time they hit the ball with the paddle. But when the ball flew off the screen, the neurons got noisy electrical signals with no pattern.
The experiment has a lot to teach scientists. It could connect computers with some living parts such as neurons. They believe such computers, no matter how their shapes change or how much they cost, might learn faster and adjust more easily to changing situations. Besides, right now, there’s a lot of effort going into Artificial Intelligence(AI),but many AI programs are based on the way scientists believe brains work, which may not be accurate. Experiments like this one can help change that.
12、What must the researchers do to the neurons before the Pong test
A.Make them linked to a computer.
B.Give them predictable stimulation.
C.Train them to send useful signals.
D.Separate them from an electronic chip.
13、What makes the neurons learn to play Pong successfully
A.The ball’s bouncing up and down.
B.The reward given by the researchers.
C.Their moving a paddle continuously.
D.Their own pattern of electrical activity.
14、What's the advantage of the computers when combined with some living parts
A. They are fancier. B.They are smaller.
C. They are more powerful. D.They are more affordable.
15、What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To lead the trend of AI. B.To promote a computer game.
C. To discuss the complexity of neurons. D.To introduce neurons' potential uses.
