Picture the scene: It’s midnight. You’re very hungry after studying for a long time. Then you see a nice pie in the fridge. Should you eat it It seems that you shouldn’t for many reasons, including its influence on your brains.
Scientists have long known that eating late at night can make us put on weight. But now a new study has shown that late-night eating can also have a bad influence on our brains — it might hurt our ability to learn new things and store memories.
“We believe that late-night eating may affect(影响) our learning by affecting the parts of the brain that control learning and memory,” Dawn Loh. PhD, a project scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said. “We believe the timing of when we eat is the main cause of the damaged memory.”
For the study, the researchers did an experiment on mice. The mice were either allowed to eat during the daytime or during the night. They received the same amount of sleep and calories. Then the researchers tested the brains of the mice and noticed that the mice eating during the night were less able to remember things well.
So think twice before the midnight snack — it might be bad for more than your weight.

In a city in France, a history teacher named Mitchell found a note in an old book. It said there was a large amount of treasure buried on an island near the city.
Mitchell invited his school’s gym teacher Scott to go with him to the island. They brought water, food, and set out for the island. At first, they thought they would find the treasure and be back in a day or two. However, they got lost at sea and had no idea how to get back home.
They finished all of their food by the seventh day and there was just half a bottle of water left. Scott kept it from Mitchell and wouldn’t let him drink it.

When was the last time you sent someone a letter by posting Thanks to the speed and convenience of using the Internet, sending e-mails rather than mailing letters using the postal system—is the preferred means of communication for many people.
In a survey of over 2, 000 young people done by the e-mail provider MSN Hotmail, around half said they send thank-you notes by e-mail, not post. Besides sending more personal e-mails, young people entering the working world today find themselves sending and replying to hundreds of business related e-mails every week.
However, many of these same young people seem to be unknown of some basic rules when it comes to sending e-mails at work. Most of the people in the survey said they didn’t check their spelling before hitting “send”. Even more surprising was that one in twenty of them said they sometimes send e-mails to their boss with the words “love and kisses”! While this is fine for personal messages to friends and loved ones, it is normally not proper in a workplace.
The main reason for this use of informal language in workplace e-mail is that a lot of young people have always communicated with others on the Internet—especially using e-mail—in a relaxing and friendly manner. For many, online communication outside of work includes talking with others in chat rooms, posting on message boards and sending e-mails to friends—all for fun.
Another reason is that some young people now entering the workforce are unfamiliar with how to write formal letters, because they have never had to write a formal letter before. They have had no training in how to write a basic business letter, and don’t know the style and language that should, and should not be used.
With more business writing now being used on the Internet than ever before, it is important for people to be told the differences in language use between personal and business communication—especially when using e-mails. So the next time you send an e-mail at the office, remember you are not just online, you are at work.
9.Which of the following shows the structure (结构)of the passage (P=Paragraph)
A. B. C. D.
10.What can we learn from the survey
A.Most young people in the survey use letters to communicate during work.
B.About 1, 000 young people show their thanks through e-mails.
C.Young people in the survey send hundreds of personal e-mails every week.
D.No one among the young people in the working world choose to post.
11.What do most young people NOT do for online communication outside of work
A.Posing news on message boards
B.Talking with others in chat rooms.
C.Sending e-mails to close friends.
D.Writing business letters to their bosses.
12.What is the best title for the passage
A.No E-mails in the Workplace
B.Rapid Development of the Online Communication
C.Formal Letter Writing: A Dying Art
D.More Training in How to Write Business Letters

Feeling sweaty from a summer heat wave Don’t worry—not all your sweat* has to go to waste. Researchers from University of California, San Diego have developed a new device* that produces energy from the sweat on your fingertips.
The device is called a biofuel cell (BFC). From the outside, it looks like a simple piece of film connected to electrodes. So how does the device work When you stick the biofuel cell to your finger, it takes in sweat. The enzymes* on the electrodes then help to produce electricity. Besides using the sweat, the device also produces small amounts of energy when it is pressed, so daily activities like typing, texting, or playing the piano are all good ways to generate electricity.
Some people may think it queer to choose fingertips as the source of sweat, but in fact, they are the sweatiest part of the body. Each finger produces between 100 and 1,000 times more sweat than most other areas.
To date, the device is the most effective on—body energy producer. Before it is invented, most power producing wearable devices require wearers to perform exercise or depend on other sources, such as sunlight or large changes in temperature. But the new device uses a passive system to produce electricity from sweat in your fingertips.even if you are sleeping or sitting completely still. One of the researchers Lu Yin said, “Uniike other sweat—powered wearables this one requires no exercise, no physical input from the wearer in order to be useful. This work is a step forward to making wearables more practical, convenient and accessible.”
It’s also quite comfortable to wear the device. The size of the device is about 1cm . Its material is flexible as well. “So you don’t need to worry about it being too rigid or feeling strange. You can comfortably wear it for a long period of time,” said Yin.
However, at the moment, the device can only store up a little bit power, and would take about three weeks of constant wear to power a smartphone, but the researchers hope to increase its power in the future.

People love walking through a giant puzzle. In a corn maze, they can follow miles of paths and run into lots of dead ends before they finally find their way out. The corn maze has been growing for almost 30 years.
Simple corn mazes began appearing in the 1980s. In 1993, the first big corn maze created for the public to enjoy was made in Annville Pennsylvania, by Don Frantz. Then, in a cornfield as big as two and a half football fields, Mr. Frantz cut “The Amazing Maize Maze” with the help of his family and friends. When it was done, almost two miles of pathways snaked through the cornfield. Since then, thousands of corn mazes have been created around the world.
For many farmers, a corn maze means a boost of extra income. During the opening weekend, 6,000 visitors came to get lost in Mr. Frantz’s maze. Charging only $5 per person, he earned almost $ 32,000 in two weeks.
Brett Herbst is also a maze designer. In 1999 he set a world record for the world’s largest corn maze, an image of the solar system with nine planets in it. He now has a business called The MAiZE, which has designed more than 4,000 mazes around the world. “Corn mazes help people connect with their roots,” he says. “People are so far removed from farm life that they are drawn to something real, something organic.”
Today, a great number of people enjoy seeking fun in a corn maze. Mr. Herbst says, “When we see families at the farm having fun, we know that they are making memories that will last a lifetime.”

On the first night, the banker sat outside to enjoy the sunset. He could hardly breathe. The smell from the cows was so great. Disgusted, he went indoors. The next evening, he tried to enjoy the sunset again but was forced to go back inside because of the smell.
He finally decided that the farmer would have to go. The banker had a lot of money, so he offered to buy the farm.
“Yes, I will sell you the farm, but it will take me at least a week to sell the cows and take care of them. Would you be willing to wait a week ” asked the farmer.
The banker decided he could do that. At the end of the week, the banker came to the farm again. The farmer wondered if they could wait until his visiting brother left. The banker thought for a while and agreed. A month passed. The farmer walked to the banker’s house to see if he still wanted the farmer.
“Why, no.” replied the banker. “You keep it.”

①Kids spend a lot of time on homework. Some people think that too much homework is necessary and helpful, because homework helps students practice what is taught in class. Is that really right
②Statistics show that 33% of 14-year-old students report spending 2 hours or more on homework daily. Isn’t that too much As a 9th grade student, I have thousands of assignments(布置) every week. As a result. I’m busy with homework every day. More often than not, I have to stay up until midnight, doing my homework. Certainly, this is harmful to my health as a developing teenager. Too much homework results in less sleep, more stress and having bad influence on my school performance because everyone knows that no good sleep leads to no good grades.
③So why do teenagers have so much homework One of the answers is that teachers often have children cover materials at home by themselves that they do not discuss during school time at all. The teacher’s reason is that there aren’t enough hours in the day and he/she wants students to learn more. But being taught how to do something by a piece of paper just isn’t the same as being taught by an actual human being. The teacher can explain things in a different way if a student doesn’t understand how to do something, but homework can’t! When it comes to get knowledge, it is teachers rather than homework that counts.
④Statistics even show that kids who take part in an extra curricular(课外的) activity have less stress. The only problem is that kids have less time for such extra curricular activities. Homework takes away most of our free time to spend with friends and family.
⑤ Too much homework can cause stress depression(抑郁), lower grades, and less time to do extra curricular activities or hang out with friends, so teachers, could you please not get so excited about homework next time
31.The writer explain there’s too much homework for students by ________ in Paragraph 2.

B.hanging out with friends leads to bad grades
C.teachers would like to give students more homework
D.it’s boring for students to have extra curricular activities
34.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.

As a result, Wan and Xiong set a price: One yuan to cook a dish or to buy a box of rice, and three yuan to cook soup. They do not charge (收费) for water or seasonings. For people from poor families, the couple refuses to charge the fees.
________ They get up at 4 a.m. every day to prepare. They boil water and cook rice at first. To make it easier for others to use the kitchen, Wan and Xiong would like to clean the kitchen, like sweeping the ground and washing the pans and pots.

Have you played with LEGOs when you are little You might have used them to build some small-sized objects. And now if you have a box of old Lego bricks (积木) sitting unused at home, Lego wants them back in a new program.
The LEGO Group has been working on a way to make LEGO bricks out of recycled plastic. They aren’t ready yet, but the company says it’s making progress at the same time.
Developed in Denmark, LEGOs have been around since the 1950s. Since about 1960, LEGO bricks have been made from a kind of plastic called ABS. Sadly, it can’t really be recycled, and it takes a long time to break down.
But since 2015, LEGO has been trying to make their products more environment-friendly. Three years ago, the company began making some LEGO parts, like trees, out of plastic made from sugar cane (甘蔗). Recently, LEGO started using paper bags instead of plastic. And the company has also started making bricks out of recycled plastic.
Over the past three years, the company has tested over 250 different ways of creating LEGO bricks from recycled plastic. Now, the company has found a way to make a good 2× 4 brick from PET plastic, which is softer than ABS plastic and can be found in things like bottles and clothing. One important step is finding a way of adding things to PET plastic to make it stronger and give it better clutch power (离合力) like ABS.

Frozen desserts have been around much longer than you might imagine. Over two thousand years ago, Alexander the Great enjoyed snow and ice mixed with honey. During the Roman Empire, runners were sent to the mountains for snow, which was then mixed with fruit or juice. Much later, the great explore Marco Polo brought a recipe from the Far East that was similar to sherbet(果子露). Historians think this was developed into the ice-cream we know today.
Frozen desserts with cream appeared in France, England and Italy during the same time period. At first it was a dish for the king. Ice-cream was first served to the public at a cafe in Paris in the late 1600s. The dish had milk, cream, butter and eggs.
Ice-cream didn’t arrive in America for another hundred years. Historical records show George Washington and other early presidents ate ice-cream. An advertisement from the time claimed ice-cream was available “almost every day”. Even so, it was still a kind of dish for the rich people.
In the early 1800s, insulated(隔热的) ice houses made the storage of ice-cream much easier. By the middle of the century, ice cream had become quite an industry(产业) in America. The Industrial Revolution(工业革命) resulted in an increase in ice-cream production. New freezing process and equipment made it easier to make ice-cream.
Ice-cream developed through the invention of various products such as “ice-cream sodas”, Some people claimed such treats were too rich to eat on Sunday. During times of war, ice-cream was used as a special prize to encourage the soldiers. During the rise of the supermarket and different kinds of snacks, ice-cream shops declined.
