It’s always a happy moment when you get some pocket money (零花钱). But have you ever thought about how to spend your pocket money wisely Here is some advice.
Make a list.
When you get your pocket money, don’t get too excited. We all have a lot of things that we want. But do you really need them That’s why it is necessary to make a list before you spend money. Start with the thing you want most. You can also write down how much it costs or how important it is in your life. By doing this, you will see if it is really necessary to buy it.
Help others.
How about being more selfless (无私的) and using your pocket money to help others We all know that there are many people in the world who are in need of our help. It is often said, “You can’t live only on air.” But now the Chinese scientists can tell you: Maybe you can.
Recently, some Chinese scientists have developed a new technique(技术). They turned CO2, one of the main greenhouse gases, into starch(淀粉).
Starch is the main part of flour(面粉)and rice that we eat every day. Usually, it’s created by plants with CO2, water and sunlight. According to the team’s director Ma Yanhe, it takes the plants nearly 60 steps to produce starch. But now, the team, after six years of hard work, has found a simpler way to do this, with only 11 steps.
“Our study shows that creating something like starch is possible in a lab, and this technology may be helpful in many areas.” said Ma.
The scientists first turned CO2 and hydrogen(氢气)into methanol(甲醇). Then they pieced(分解)these methanol molecules(分子)into bigger and more complex(复杂的)molecules. Finally the starch was produced.
This method makes it possible to produce food in factories, taking the place of traditional farming. This will not only help make plenty of food, but also save water and land. It may also help recycle CO2 to deal with climate(气候)change, according to China Daily.
The study can be helpful in space, too. Astronauts may no longer need to worry about their food as they travel in space. They may simply turn the CO2 they breathe out into the food they eat!

Otters(水獭)are cute water animals. These days, keeping otters as pets is getting popular. In Japan, some “otter cafés(咖啡馆)”are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos posted online have interested more people to buy otters as pets. However, these enjoyable photos and videos hide the damage(损害)that the online trade is doing to otters. In fact, wild otters are facing many dangers-they have long been hunted(猎杀)for their coats; in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters.
In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers.
Otters are very social. They live in family groups of up to 15 in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. When they swim, they need enough space. Their owners’ bathtubs(浴缸)or pools are nowhere near as large as the bodies of water in the wild.
On the other hand, otters simply don’t make good pets. They have a very special fishy smell. If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are unhappy, they will make loud noises and even attack(攻击)people. If a person is hurt by an otter, he or she needs to go to hospital at once.
So, we should stop the otter trade and never share photos and videos about them online.

We’ve been driving around in gas (汽油)—powered cars for over 100 years. Once we run out of all the oil from the earth, we can’t make more. Is it time for a change
Biofuel
One simple way to use less gas is to fill up with biofuel, a fuel (燃料) made from plants. Biofuels can be brewed (酿制) from corn, wheat stems or other plant waste. Even old cooking oil can be turned into diesel, a fuel used in trucks. Most cars can’t run only on biofuel, so it’s mixed with gas. But every little bit helps!
Go electric
An electric car has an electric motor that runs on batteries, which come in a big pack. Instead of filling up the tank, an electric car owner plugs (插) it into an outlet to recharge (充电). What happens when the batteries run down You need to find somewhere to plug in. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours to recharge an electric car. That’s not as handy as a quick stop at a gas station.
Hybrid (gas + electric)
A hybrid car has two engines—one uses gas and the other uses electricity. For short trips, it turns on batteries like an—electric car. But if the batteries are low, the car can change to the gas engine. This can be a good choice for people who are worried about the batteries running out halfway through a trip. But when the car burns gas, it still gives off waste gases like a regular car.
Solar power
Could we use the sun to power cars Some car companies are working on it. A solar car has an electric motor that runs on batteries. But instead of being plugged in, the batteries are recharged by the solar panels (太阳能板) on the car’s roof and body. To charge up, you just need to park the car in the sun! But making solar panels and batteries that are powerful enough to move a car is very expensive. It might take a good bit of time before solar cars are available to the general public.

High-tech machines have made life easier for millions around the world. However, some people still prefer low-tech ways of doing things. Here’s an example of why this is happening. You can microwave a frozen (冷冻的) hamburger in 60 seconds. However, it won’t taste as good as one you cook on the stove. And if you’re in that much of a hurry, you probably won’t take time to toast (烘烤) the bread. High-tech cooking saves time, but it doesn’t make better-tasting meals.
Most people get their news from high-tech sources (来源) like television or the Internet. This has many advantages. For example, electronic news is more up to date than newspapers or magazines. It’s also more exciting to see live and videotaped news events than photographs.
However, newspapers and magazines have some important advantages. They give more background and details. They also let you read the parts that are important to you and skip (跳过) the rest. Other high-tech time savers have similar disadvantages. For example, most people use the phone or email to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. But when you use the Internet or the phone, you don’t always think carefully about what you are saying, and sometimes you forget the important things you want to communicate. Similarly, when you do your homework on the computer, you needn’t check your spelling by yourself. However, you are so busy with the computer that they don’t pay enough attention to the actual words they are writing.

No one knows who invented the button(扣子). It might have appeared as early as 2,000 BC.When it first started, it was just something beautiful sewn(缝上)onto your clothes. What is more important than the button is the buttonhole(扣眼). About 3,000 years later, someone finally invented the buttonhole, and buttons were suddenly useful.
Before buttons, clothes were bigger—they had no fixed shapes. Because of the buttonhole, the fashion moved closer to the body when we discovered uses for the button. It was the very way to make clothes fit well for the body. People feel safer like it’s never going to open.
The size of the button depends on its use. Shirt buttons are generally small, and they are close to each other, while coat buttons are larger and farther apart. For example, the standard buttons of men’s shirts are 10.16 mm and of suit jackets are 20.32 mm.
In modern clothing and fashion design, buttons are mostly made of plastic but also may be made of metal or wood. Buttons can also be used on wallets and bags. They can be shown as examples of works of art.
A button can be used for a long time. It’s one of the most lasting designs in history, because it really works to make people feel safer. Zippers easily break and are hard to fix. However, if a button breaks, you just need to sew another on. And you can sew more buttons if needed.
The pattern of a button hasn’t changed much since the Middle Ages. It’s not only one of the most useful inventions, but it plays an important role in the development of clothes. Up to now, we can still see its influence on the clothes design. If you’re wearing the clothes with buttons, take a look at the position of buttons on it. If you’re a man, the buttons would likely be on the right side, but for a woman, the buttons are usually found on the left.

According to UNESCO, a large number of children in villages in some African countries like Kenya and Tanzania do not go to school. They have to work to make money for their family. And more than half of people in these countries live without electricity.
A company is now working to solve both of these problems. It has created a special solar (太阳的) power station, which is in the shape of a cow, called “Solar Cow”. The company encourages parents in those poor villages to send their children to school by setting up Solar Cows at schools.
Just as its name suggests, the Solar Cow can charge batteries (给电池充电) called “Solar Milks”. The Solar Milks provide electricity for the families.
The batteries can only be charged using the Solar Cow, so children have to go to school to get the electricity. Every day, children put their batteries into the bottom of their school’s Solar Cow. They go to class while the batteries are being charged. At the end of the day, they take the charged ones home.
Each fully- charged Solar Milk battery can charge a mobile phone three or four times, or a radio once or twice. The battery is also a flashlight, and it can provide ten hours of light. “My father used to travel two to three hours to the charging shop to charge his phone, and it cost a lot,” a boy said. “But now, he can use the battery I bring from school to charge his phone at home.”

Many of my classmates are losing weight so they can look more beautiful. There is nothing wrong with being beautiful, but it is not wise to lose weight by dieting (节食) unhealthily. Every year, many people become sick because of dieting. It is bad for their health and even costs them their own lives. In fact, life is the most important thing. Exercise more and eat less. This could be the best way to lose weight.
These days, many of us have idols (偶像). They are mostly pop stars. It’s good to like someone with great qualities (品质). But sometimes some fans are too crazy. For example, they might spend too much time watching their idols’ shows. They also buy expensive gifts for their idols. But their own lives might be pretty hard. Some young fans might pay so much attention to their idols that their grades get worse. Some even give up classes to see their idols. Fans should love their idols in a healthy way.
I often see people wearing hanfu on the street. Some might think they are strange, but I don’t think so. Everyone has the right to make a choice.
